i prefere the old shape ! just my opinion:roll: |
998R every day! |
998R :o:o:o:o:o:D |
Depends - you wanna look at it all day and polish it, get a 998R. If you wanna ride it, get the 999S! ;) |
Franky said no and so should you:devil: you said it looks better your self:D |
998 mate Don't want to go down the butt ugly route :bouncy::bouncy::bouncy: |
998 or a old 916sps foggy rep |
I was in the same predicament a few months ago, ended up buying the 998R You say that you once owned a 998R, so you must be spoilt then having all the trick bits that come as standard and the bike having that 'special' feel. |
i prefer the 999 ! more modern. /ian |
998R except no substitute :) |
999S...You know it makes sense.: Clint. smug: |
Having both a 998R and a 999R (I know lucky bar steward), I can say without hestitation that the 998R is the bike to get. Personally I love the plugged in feeling you get with the classic shape bike and the feel you get from the front tyre, the 999 is an easier bike to ride but feels remote to me and is not as comfortable (the seat pad is a lousy shape and filled with mahogany) on longer journeys. Also on the road the 999 is a licence loser the mirrors are a fecking disgrace absolutely useless! last year I did less than 2000 miles on the 999, araound 4000 on the 998 and around 2000 on annettes sps and the same on our old 916 hack bike. To me that says it all dave ps get the squish set and the cams indexed properly, my 998 now wheelies off the throttle in second gear and is still on standard gearing, the best money i have spennt on the bike!! Shame i am too much of a numpty to be able to use it to use all the power all of the time |
8 everytime for me..assuming you can find one mate ? Nat |
dave harris you are 1 lucky bar steward :flame: |
yea that's just to many iconic bikes for one man to have. me jealous NOo |
I had a punter buy summat the other day..and he had; Laverda Jota MV F4 Oro MV F4 Senna MV F4 Ago 996SPS 955 Racing factory jobber 888SPS RC30 NR750 Ho..ho..hon.. (£35k in the eighties as I remember...:o) And he was mates with Castiglioni (which probably explains his desirable MV collection !!!). Those sort of people you can REALLY go off.. Nat |
forget the numbers just look at the shape, how can you ever match the old shape, never ever. :D |
998r..............................999 motor in a proper wrapper and some bling as standard. Ray |

Interesting............. so for you the 999 has no advantages over the 998?? Yeah, in terms of looks the 998's are sweeter but they must have improved some things in the 999's, right? |
Age996 has it right, don`t go down the butt ugly route, stick with the 998. |
This is maybe in the wrong section???!! Post it up in the 749/999 section and you'll get a different response. Maybe try the Ducati idle chat section??? I'm sure the 749/999 is better in some areas but a Ducati is bought as much to look at as to ride. Ray. |
yes good idea go for the outdated oldfasioned shape that isnt as easy to ride quickly. |

If you want something new and easy to ride, buy a fireblade. If you want something sexy, iconic and very rewarding get a 996/8 You're just annoyed because you've realised you made a mistake when you sold yours! |
year right, mine was a R reg 916 with 107 bhp. would i swap it back? would i bollox. to be fair the 998R is a great bike and has pretty much the same engine as mine but with more kudos. just depends if you like the looks/ridability. i liked the 'fresh' look of the 999 from day one; unlike many; and dont think i would ever change back. |
Tried a 999 before buying my 996R. I was really disappointed, a real shame. It sounded like a Jap 4, the build quality was iffy. It looked and still looks unfinished rather than challenging. The rear end is just a mess. The side wings are of no practical use. If they were I guess at least one other bike in this world would use a similar system. For me it is no more comfortable. Spares cost a fortune. In 2005, they still don't have it right but are too stubborn to admit it. Such a shame, it would not take a huge effort to sort it 8R. :burn: |
998R everytime..its the only bike i would consider selling my 748R for. |
I guess the same principle in miniature form on the Aprilia. On the Duc I think the only reason for the wings is to give the impression of aggression as the front wheel looks to be pushed into the fairing. Mmmm form over function = crap anyway. Agree Weeksy. |
Steve, It's a very personal choice mate, and a bit like comparing windows (999) and DOS (998) ;) Cheers! Scott |
I'm a big fan of analogies but you have lost me on that one, never thought of software as a thing of beauty and if either the 998 or the 999 crashed as often as Billy Gates' stuff the hospitals would be full in minutes!!! Everytime this topic comes up the opposite camps see the others opnion as some sort of offront to their personal taste and Judgement!!! FFS I've got a 96 CBR6 in the garage, but so what, I like it!! I really don't care if anyone else thinks it's ugly, slow, doesn't handle etc , etc. Ray. |
I've never seen DOS crash and the final release was actually Gate's handywork, even then it wasn't all his .... he only owns windows, didn't write a single line of code on that one ... But then again, are we talking about IBM DOS, MS-DOS ... or any other variant? :frog: (we need a nerdy smilie with so many nerds in here ...) My coat is already on .... |
Geek alert! |
Ask Frankie Chilli which he prefers....................................... A race bike on the road, not a roadbike on the track |
yeah but he didnt win jack |

A new Fireblade apparently. :frog: |
lol, beat me to it! |
Coo this is getting good!:o Hand bags at the AGM methinks! |
Here's my view... The 916 evolved through to the 998R, and yes it's an iconic bike and will be remembered forever, but sooner or later as with everything you hit the end of it's development, and it's time to do something new, and the 999 is it, like it or lump it, it's here to say, and then that will be replaced by the road going GP bike, we all know that will happen, and again that will be a revolution not evolution. The 999 has done exactly like it's predessor and won 2 consecutive WSB titles, so that must speak for itself, you could have a whole host or arguements about that too. You need to ask yourself what you want the bike for, the 998R is the ultimate within that range, as good as it gets (for a road bike), or do you get the 999S, probably better that the 998R, but doesn't have that iconic desirability |
Absolutely no question its gotta be the 998R, i can't ever see the 999's being regarded as classic's. Opening the garage and seeing a 999 must be like waking up next to Ann Widdacombe! Disregarding the looks having riden 749/999 (not the r) and 996 SPS/R on the road, not the track the new one just doesn't do it for me, and as someone else pointed out the mirrors really are a joke. Must admit it may not be fair comparing SPS/R to standard 999 but....... |
