Petrol cap locked with no key! HELP!

I've managed to source a petrol tank with the cap in the locked position, and no key! :(

Any ideas how I can sort this out and keep the same cap? I'm not bothered if it locks, as long as it can open and close properly.

If my best option is to go for an aftermarket cap, how can I get this one off?:puzzled:

simonducati 08-Feb-2005 00:01

Chang it for one that dose not have a key:eureka:

madmav 08-Feb-2005 00:02

Take the tank to a laser key place !
they can Xray the lock and make you a key ! simple

or you can drill out the tumblers !!!!!!!

but dont do it with out !

on second thoughts

no dont do it at all !!:puzzled:

khu996 08-Feb-2005 00:06

Its difficult enough to come by 749/999 tanks, I had to take this opportunity when it arose.

I haven't heard of this laser key business, are the gonna be in the yellow pages?

I've got a good mind to go and get me drill and make some big holes!!

weeveetwin 08-Feb-2005 00:09

Is it like this one? Can't you just remove the five bolts around it and take it off? It'll be easier to take to a locksmith then at least.

khu996 08-Feb-2005 00:11

Nope, its not like that one. Its a standard 749/999 cap. If I could get it open, I could get access to the bolts and take it off, which would make life easier. But its locked! :flame:

skidlids 08-Feb-2005 00:13

remove pump, reach up inside with a phillips screw driver and undo the two small screws on the bottom of the tank cap, this will allow the catch system to come away from the rest of the cap allowing you to open the top part. Keep a eye open for the odd spring etc.

khu996 08-Feb-2005 00:14

Skidlids...is there anything you don't know! :D

Cheers mate, I'm so sad (and excited) that I'm gonna go try it now! :P

Dibble 08-Feb-2005 00:28

Skids,

Does that work with the 748/9** tanks as I know another DSC member with the same problem after he bought a trackday tank but the key hasn't materialised ....

Cheers ...

skidlids 08-Feb-2005 01:07

yes Pietro it works with the 748/916 tanks, I've done it on the 916 tank but not the 999 I'm assuming its the same I'm sure Khuram will soon let us know if i'm wrong

khu996 09-Feb-2005 14:49

Sorry about the slow update. Ive removed the two small screws, and a small circular plate drops out, but it doesn't release the catch system. :(

Any other ideas Skids?

JPM 09-Feb-2005 14:54

Why not remove your cap from your existing tank so you can see what else might need removing?

Can you not actuate the catch from the inside...

Worst case scenario sell it.... (to me! :D)

AK 09-Feb-2005 15:12

Mav, thats one I havent heard - the lazer key thing - will tell Alan.

The last tank he bought had the same prob - but he phoned around first to find out costs for the replacement lock (not as expensive as he first thought) - and then drilled out the tumblers to get existing one out.

Khu - hope you get it sorted - try here???

khu996 09-Feb-2005 15:17

Thanks CK. Wanted to try some other clever method before I took to drilling it out. If worst comes to worst, thats what it'll have to be.

antonye 09-Feb-2005 15:36

You should be able to just push the locking piece in (it's only held in by a spring!) and this should flip the cap up. Works on all the old ones...

JPM 09-Feb-2005 15:40

It's a different filler cap on the 749/999.... same as the Uglystrada...

There's effectively 2 holes, one for fuel and one for the locking mechanism, which has a plastic cover between the catch/lock and the fuel, I'm guessing if he's managed to get that off from the inside he should have access

antonye 09-Feb-2005 16:35

Ok, I know what you're saying but fundamentally the locking machanisms are exactly the same. Just push on the latch and it should pop up...

JPM 09-Feb-2005 16:49

The problem I see is the cover though will be blocking the lock from underneath, coupled with the fuel pump being right at the back of the tank, near the seat pad

It does look very nasty indeed!

No thats because you're Mav's apprentice - The Prince of Bling!

You'll have it painted white and burberry soon ...

antonye 09-Feb-2005 17:01

Sod it - hammer a screwdriver into it and break the fcuker.

khu996 09-Feb-2005 17:11

Yup, its the cover blocking access to the latch. Is there nothing else I can do? :(

JPM 09-Feb-2005 17:34

I'll check the original filler tonight, I've still got it in the car, but can't check the tank now not without removing the new filler, drilling the lock sounds like a plan to be honest.

You could always contact a dealer and see if they have some kind of master key, or knowledge to get round it

antonye 09-Feb-2005 17:42

If the tank is off, take it to any decent locksmith as they'll be able to pick it for you for a small fee.

If you take your 999 keys you've got as well that will help as it gives them an idea of the size and shape of the key and number of tumblers, etc.

khu996 09-Feb-2005 17:47

JPM, I'll wait until I hear from here before the drill gets the better of me :D

On the other hand, I could follow Antonye's sensible advice...but the drill is sooo tempting

Steve M 09-Feb-2005 17:58

ah - drill to a petrol tank

I assume there's no trace of petrol at all left in the tank - remember it's the fumes that ignite.

If you do take the drill to it, get a mate with a camcorder - could be worth 250 quid:lol:

khu996 09-Feb-2005 17:59

 No petrol, but I may film it for posterity and post a little mpg :D  :P

marksduc748 09-Feb-2005 18:45

it will come out with a cheap slide hammer. make sure its a good screw in it or it will just snap off but screw it in a good three or four turns and one good tug its out youll just have to push a srew driver in the hole and turn it. dont drill it! once its out you can always stick another barrel in the hole.

guest1 09-Feb-2005 19:04

Zone 0, need to use hand operated drill and bronze or brass materials (for both the drill and the bit)

khu996 09-Feb-2005 19:53

Ive been at at with a variety of screw drivers, and the top of the barrel is looking a bit of a mess now :flame:

Whats this slide hammer business?

JPM 09-Feb-2005 20:12

Here you go...

Doesn't look good to be honest, I've tried moving the catch, but it won't move, so drill/hammer etc seem the best option..

JPM 09-Feb-2005 20:13

Another angle

khu996 09-Feb-2005 20:50

Thanks for the fotos JPM, just as I thought. Why make it so difficult!!!!!!!!? :flame:

I haven't used the drill in ages, last time I did, I botched up the job! Keeping my fingers crossed ;)

skidlids 09-Feb-2005 20:59

I cant see why that housing over the catch bit didn't come loose when you removed the two screws holding it and with that removed the catch and a spring should drop out

JPM 09-Feb-2005 21:05

I think he can't get to that as there's a plastic cover in the tank

marksduc748 09-Feb-2005 22:35

slide hammer is what they use for removing certain dents. once you see one youll know how it works but the screws you get with them are usually soft so best to put a steel self tapper in it. screw it in thew top where the key goes and woosh! out she comes. slide hammers or dent pullers have been around for years and almost every car accessory shop sells them.
