2004 999R advice please

Well, after some 3 years of inexcusable procrastination, I’ve finally put my money where my heart is. I finally concluded that a 2005 999S was exactly the bike for me, so I’ve just put a deposit on a brand new 2004-spec 999R!

This’ll be my first Ducati and, whilst I can’t wait, I’m hoping that the experience won’t be too emotionally (or financially!) draining. Since putting the money down, I keep waking up in the middle of the night with flashbacks to the late 70’s, when a friend bought an 860 GTS. I think he managed to get it on the road for two (not consecutive) days in three years. But of course things are a lot better now………

I’ll be getting it next month, so I need to start thinking about the usual bits and bobs. I know there’s been a lot written on here about these things before, but I’d like to tap the current thinking about the best huggers, double-bubble screens (I’m 6’ 3”) and something to tidy the rear end (ahem!). As importantly, what ones should I avoid?

All advice gratefully received, and I look forward to seeing you on the road v. soon.

Thats what I like to see! Impulse buying at it's best!

D/P performance high screen not a d/bubble spoils the looks.

Tail tidy from anywhere, motrax i think is £25, raises the No plate up away from the rear tyre.

Keep to d/p carbon for a hugger etc as there is so much carbon on the bike you want it all to match with its weave.

57mm termi or leo vinci exhaust, power commander set up at jhp - there or there abouts 150bhp.

Thatll keep you going for a while.........

COL595 09-Feb-2005 22:12

It wasn't my fault (honest!). Spartacus put a post on here about the deal 3X were doing, and.........well, it would've been rude not to. You know how it is.

JPM 09-Feb-2005 22:16

1. Make sure you get the correct paddock stand.... otherwise it could possibly when hell freezes over before you see the correct one.

2. Screens, plenty around, usual suspects for them JHP/AJR/Nelly

3. Tail tidy - Nelly has them in, mine should be on it's way

And where in the UK are you?

spartacus 09-Feb-2005 22:18

that's right, blame me.... :rolleye:

dave w 09-Feb-2005 22:24

Nice one Col.... You local to 3X ?

Lily 09-Feb-2005 22:27

Is 3x 3 legged cross near Ringwood?

Greybloke 09-Feb-2005 22:29

Well done, but this accessorising is compulsive!

Since taking delivery of my 749 10 days ago, I've not been able to resist the temptation to add hugger, screen, cover, additional stickers, and with plenty of carbon on the wish list. I've never felt the need to tinker with any of my previous 20 or so bikes.

Good luck.

dave w 09-Feb-2005 22:29

Thats the one Lil.

COL595 09-Feb-2005 22:33

Thanks Dave. I'm about 160 miles away from 3X - fairly local, if it's a sunny day. I'm in Essex.

Errrr....what's this about getting the correct paddock stand??

I wonder how many 'R' versions are impulse buys. I know I went in for a 749S and left with a 749R.

At least I only buy one bike at a time :D

Rob

COL595 09-Feb-2005 23:07

I dunno if it could really be called an impulse buy, but it certainly was Spartacus' fault. Still, I won't really miss my house, and the cats didn't seem to mind being put down.

Now, about these accessories..............?

2)D.P hugger.
3)Brembo levers all round.
4)Sorry!!! No 1 slot - have the thing set up - Pro Twins - Surrey.

Dont you just hate thread hijackers!!??
Make sure the paddock stand you buy will fit the '04R bobbins and not fit under the swingarm like the '03 bikes.

Mark 09-Feb-2005 23:39

what you saying keefy?:frog:

dave w 09-Feb-2005 23:42

KB....dont you get the paddock stand for free when you buy the R ??

Mark 09-Feb-2005 23:43

what happened 2 u'res Davie Dave?

[Edited on 9-2-2005 by flanker]

Scottch 09-Feb-2005 23:43

Col,

Don't buy a paddock stand mate!

R's come as standard with their own paddock stand, cover, bobbins, race ecu and exhaust.

Also, imho, I wouldn't bother with any of the big bore termi's - I've seen 3 cracked rear silencers and 2 sets of cracked maniolds for these.

Good luck and enjoy!

Cheers!

Scott

The 749R and 999R have different swingarms depending on year.

999R '03 and '04 have the older style swinging arm
the 749R and the 999R '05 have the fabricated swinging arm

Great!!! Congrats and the best of luck with the R.
But why not a 05 R?
Did you get a great discount on the 04 R?

Sorry Rob - that's not quite right

03 999R's had cast swing arms
04 999R's had fabricated swingarms

Cheers!
