Is this the 996 range? 996 996S 996S Hodgon Replica 996SPS 996SPS Fogarty Replica What the main difference between the S,SPS & the replicas? Also can someone give me a guide price on a 2000 996 SPS Fogarty Replica, with 4000k on it and FDSH? Does anyone own one? [Edited on 14-2-2005 by octo] |
You've missed out the best one - the 996R  Foggy rep I'd recon should be about £10K but not as popular as they once were. Not ridden one so can't comment. You tried the 999 yet? |
ar, ok, didn’t realise there was an R though the SPS was like the equivalent. OK, what’s the difference between the SPS & the R? I saw a SPS Foggy Rep at the weekend and it looked trick, it was totally standard and had all the bits on it? What do you get with an R that you don’t get with the SPS Foggy rep? |
The 999 test ride is tomorrow, but now I really want to take out the 996, The dealer is doing the 999S for £10k but for the same money I can get a trick 996, and I do prefer the look of the 996. Its all very confusing, I am the world worst decision maker when it comes to everything! |
998 testastretta engine ( same as a base/s 999) better engine cpu management (same as a 999) single injector fuel injection ( same as a 999) ohlins front forks ( same as a 999) p4 4 pad brakes ( same as a 999) .......... |
The R has the 998 Testastretta engine, so is a 998 in all but name. It has a full carbon fairing too, which I don't think the SPS has. SPS also has Showa forks, not Ohlins. The Foggy replica is based on the 996S I think, but has Ohlins forks. The Hodgson rep is also based on the 996S but has standard Showa forks, but came with Termis, the paintjob and a few carbon extras (air tubes/reg holder, swingarm cover). Personally, I don't rate the Foggy rep. Too overpriced for what it is, unless you're a collector and want to hang onto it. If you're going to ride it, get an S/SPS/R. The S gets my vote for value for money, or the R if you want something 'special'. [Edited on 14-2-2005 by Twinfan] |
Mate if you want the trickest 996 get a 996sps, 996r or a 998r. You can get caught up in history if you want with a foggy rep, or even further back a 916 sps or a 955 (if you can find one) |
There you go mate, go to www.blacksbikeshop.co.uk they have a 996r £9-10000. 6000 miles on clock. |
is the difference between the SPS and the SPS Foggy just cosmetics? The guys at work are telling me the Foggy Rep is like buying a WRX with decals in it, basically a bit chav... |
f you get the genuine foggy rep then it is..genuine.A ltd edition with cover and plaque! If you get a 996s with the foggy rep sticker kit on it then yes Chav springs to mind. The 996R is a much better base to start from! Buy the one ive pointed out, clean it up, tlc. Its worth 11000-12000.....well at the moment!;) |
The foggy rep is a dressed up 996SPS which was limited to 200 bikes. Foggy reportedly got £1000 of the sale price for each one to boost his earnings in 1999. The 996R is often thought of as the best of the gendre as it has the 998 testastretta engine, was hand built by Corse and it won a world championship for Troy Bayliss. |
so, the differene engine & parts wise, between the: S SPS R is? |
S - showa front ohlins rear 996 engine with SPS cams SPS - ohlins front and rear same engine as above - limited edition R- ohlins front and rear, carbon fairing, limited edition, 998 Testastretta engine similar tune to 04 999S |
....won a world championship for Troy Bayliss, and came second in the next!! :o:P Not all sps's had ohlins front! |
Octo you need to understand the giant steps forward made by the 998 testastretta engine. Do a search on 996 flaky rockers........ |
Foggy Rep was a standard 996 SPS 1998 with the following differences Frame had a lower cross over tube below airbox for homologation for race bikes to fit larger airbox-no effect on road version. Gloss Black Marchesini Alloy 5 spokes wheels Nose fairing with white number board already painted Tank had Moto Cinelli, Ducati Perf and Foggy signature decals laquered in. Seat base was in carbon fibre Silencers were Termignoni Titanium with carbon sleeves Screen had a black bit at the bottom for the foggy eyes decal Tecnosel foam seat Fairing uppers had Ducati Perf decals only Red Mirrors Carbon Swing arm guard fitted Foggy Bike cover And the decal kit supplied seperately There were actually 202 bikes produced-the extras were one for Foggy and one for Hoss Elm of Moto Cinelli |
No, your not paying attention are you! :D 996r same engine (ish, t/i con rods) as 999s 136hp (998cc) 998R is 999cc same engine as a 999R bigger bore shorter stroke. |
sorry I meant: 996R 999S same engine-sh, different sytling, similar price. eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, iam getting there, slowly, (Iam at work) so having to flick quickly between screens everytime the boss makes a move towards me, so no iam not really paying attention ! Lets do it this way. If i was in a position of a cash buyer and had 10000-12000 then..... 1) a 996sps on a y plate say £8000 with ohlins and a few bits 2) a 996r on y/51 plate. In tip top condition £11,- 12000. Get a bargain a bit tatty for £9000.... poss good investment good bike. 3) I suspect £10000 gets you an 04 999s new. Good bike, 2 years of warranty but old spec and will lose £2000 depreciation. 4) 998R as good as it gets, but possibly £14000 for a good one, although you may not lose too much money. |

Re. the SPS, the 98 & 99 models have showa forks, the last year 2000 models were the only ones with Ohlins forks. Same spec engine in all 3 model years, but i believe that there are a few mods between the 996S engine and the SPS engines, i.e Titanium rods in the SPS but not the 996S (although Ducati qouted the same horsepower). Only 80 year 2000 SPS's imported into the UK. comes complete with number headstock, cover, stand and 2 sets of termi's. (must declare a vested interest here as i'm selling my SPS) Andyb's price guide is pretty close to the mark, although i would value the 996SPS round about the same as the 998R:lol::lol::lol::lol::devil: |
:o :lol::lol: You wouldnt take £10000 for yours then............. did i say 10 i meant £8000!!:devil: [Edited on 14-2-2005 by andyb] |
Just to confuse octo even further, the proper title of a Foggy rep is -916SPS FOGARTY REPLICA,so it's not even a 996! Well ok then,it's got a 996SPS engine! I was talking to BDG at the bike show, the 998 engine is a far better bet! I own a Foggy rep & a Bayliss rep(very similar to a 996R) & in standard trim the 998 is the better bike, not that the Foggy isn't a great bike & piece of history,it's not quite as good as the 998! But both are loads better than ANY of those ugly 999's! Roll on the "standard" V4!!! |
I may be wrong If its the riding ex, you want and you can get more out of any of the models you have mentioned here [1] you is a much better rider than me [2] you ride roads that i aint found yet [3] you is down to be the next world champ. I have heard people going on about my .S. has 1 b.h.p. more than the last model but realy does it matter I have a 900ss 94 and a 916sps 98 and must admit i do enjoy the 900 as much as the 916 perhaps caus while i dont want to bin it it aint the end of the world if i do! i can push her a lot more as i want to ride /keep the 916 mint condition/ long term investment me thinks.yous pays yer monies fer what yer wants geezer...... |
It a choice between the: 996R 998S (can't afford an R) 999S The 996R & 998S same engine? (sorry if Iam being dumb!). |
yes mate. The purists will say that the 996r had titanium con rods. But they are all 998cc. around 136hp [Edited on 14-2-2005 by andyb] |
I wouldn't buy a bike as a long term investment. Buy the one you want to use and enjoy it :D |
Quote:
Just to be pedantic...moi!!! The 996R only makes 135bhp, whereas the 998S and i believe some of those pig ugly thing 999's also make 136bhp. a full one bhp difference. I think my fat ar$e seat of the pants dyno would struggle to detect that difference, indeed its cheaper to lose some weight and go on a diet, which is what i'm doing. (p.s. yes Andy i know you said 'around' 136bhp) I'll get my coat....... |
Right sorted out a ride on both a 998S & 999S next saturday. Can't wait! |
just buy a bip and "bling it up" .... |
Now if were talking 998s.(Im sure rcgbob'll be along in a minute). Some 998s are quite rare. Get yourself a UK 998s mono in red of course.. 1 of 27 and Keefyb lost one of those...... Where are you test riding? |
cant believe you have by passed the 996R and the 996R or even the 996R. its the 996R you want to ride, if you cant find one wait for a 996R to come along, they are lovely to ride. so just to make sure you have understood all that you need to get a ? :D |
Wasn't there a red bull rep as well ?????? |
Quote:
You are correct. Only twenty produced in the UK by Marcol Moto/Reve Racing Team. 996 BP base then lots of trick/carbon bits/polished alloy added plus full Sil Moto exhaust and racing chip/full Red Bull paint job/Marchesini wheels and brass serial plate. Signed certificate by J R and S E. I have got number 16. Cheers SPS |
Two "kinds" of 996R, those with a plaque, the first 500 sold on the net then those without, 150 extra made because of demand. 996R everytime. |
Quote:
Not sure that's true? I understood that they built 500 only, with 300 available for sale on the net (for the road) and 200 available for race teams. If some were produced without plaques (why?) these may have been for the race teams only? Its great that you're looking at the archetypal shape and not the new "japanese" models;) Besides - you must get a 996R or at a push a 998R - especially if you're into carbon parts. I'm glad to see that most recommendations on here are for the 996R. AS andyb states, there were fewer 998S monos sold in the UK its true, but there were also less Reliant Robins sold in the UK than minis, that doesn't make them better though!!! ;) ;) |
Well I would strongly recommend the 996SPS But then I would wouldn't I ! |
Well being a creep i'd agree with Adam, Rattler & Beancounter coz i've got them both.:D Both great bikes but different. I was a normal bloke until that fateful day i met Rattler, my hero and rolemodel who converted me to first the SPS then the R. You have a lot to answer for and my wife is after your blood mate!!!! Beware. Good job Surrey's a long way away. Re the 996R plaque, the one i've bought was a late model (judging off the engine number and registration date) bought from a dealer, not of the internet (obviously the dealer may have bought it of the net). It came without the plaque but the original owner got a plaque direct from the factory, complete with letter from the factory. |
Quote:
Don't blame me!!! I only said what I thought about them, its down to you to buy the bloody things!!! ;) In fact, its down to you that I bought that DRZ, so maybe we're equal ???ish???? Mind you, I'm jealous as hell that you've got both a SPS and a 996R - we'll see how this year goes with the ZX - maybe I'll be calling you soon for a little "discussion" about that SPS!!!;) As for the 996R sales, all the 996Rs were pretty much made and sold at the same time. Later-registered ones were ones that had been sitting in dealerships for longer without getting registered, but all were initially sold via the internet I believe - around June/July 2001. I don't know how many are left around now though? Tim:ninja: |
BDG, much better avatar than the last one. Can you get the camera man to zoom in a bit though, and ask him to set it to high res while he's at it  Octo, I have a nice 996 looking for a new home if your interested (see my avatar) ;) [Edited on 16-2-2005 by John W] |

Thanks for that piece of info, I looked at a 996R last week and it had no plaque, made me nervous of it's history but maybe it came like that. Anyway I dont think I can quite stretch to the R, so I'm looking for a late 996SPS in the next few months (awaiting bonus!) Thanks for all this info, I've been lurking for a while :) |
