clutch

how many types of STM slipper clutches are there?

andyb 14-Feb-2005 20:39

there are i believe two. 12 and 48 tooth. These then break down into further expensive items using things like titaniun posts etc...

adam 14-Feb-2005 20:56

thanks andy, i have just sent a u2u to nelly, the result is a wallet which is aprox 3584 gramms lighter, or convert to pounds????

andyb 14-Feb-2005 21:37

You not bought one of those orrible centre spring jobbies av you?

adam 14-Feb-2005 21:50

oh yes, had one before and was very impressed with it. have you been tempted then, hey, i bet you have.

andyb 14-Feb-2005 22:16

No thankyou, ill stick with a proper one!

Red-leader 14-Feb-2005 23:34

Adam
Its also time for me to purchase. I am torn between the single spring jobie and ducati standard slipper type. Would be interested in your decission. Price on a ducati slipper without plates £395 and takes standard plates say £85. Where as single spring type best price I have seen is about £600 ish and special plates.

I'm interested in this discussion, too. And also, why is Andyb against the centre-spring thingy?

Mind you, if it's good enough for Kev Red Leader, it's good enough for me!

Look at these at STM http://www.stm.to.it/en/moto/
A J Racing www.ajracing.info 01453 845544 mob 07957 166896

I just got new plates from him, in post next day lots of help great !

48 tooth lasts lots longer and so does the basket you can still fit the six bolt face with a 48 tooth basket

STM still recomend 12 tooth for 120bhp pluss engins. but AJ said he runs 150 bhp with the 48 tooth evo.
A J Racing said I should change but the basket on mine is still fine. the plates wear in to the side of the basket but you can file them out not to much. £170 for the 12 tooth S T M plates !

Only a personal thing but I don't want a flying sorcer for a clutch, give me the classic look anyday

:cool::burn:

adam 15-Feb-2005 20:27

As I said Ihad one on this 996r before and was very impressed. It has the ball bearing system which is much better than just the ramp type which i had on my 748R. Sigma performance told me that unless you keep on greasing the ramps at regular intervals then the slipping action will not work effectively. The stm is a handsome bit of kit also.I have just spoke to a Ducati trained mechanic, Tim who used to work at Tecmoto but now works at Harris performance, and his words were you cannot go wrong with the stm. He said Ducati will faze out the six post type, and go for the single spring.
loz, where did you see it for that price?
andy, what do you call a proper one? you seem very negative about the stm type.

andyb 15-Feb-2005 20:55

Im not negative at all, the ti posted slipper in my bike is an stm!

I think our bikes are such technical bits of kit, with several well informed specialists available, you have to go with the opinions of one of them and ill stick with jhp.

He doesnt like them and justifies this with a variety of technical comments which is good enough for me.

Red-leader 15-Feb-2005 23:55

Well Loz !
I am just as confused as Iwas before !
Do they do an automatic :puzzled:

moto748 16-Feb-2005 14:33

I got a STM 48t clutch. Hope to get it fitted today.

It's a proper clutch, though, not a slipper.:bouncy:

How about Proton, Kawasaki and WCM?

Read all about it here

Funnily enough I just happened to be reading this article ...

andyb 16-Feb-2005 22:30

Where :puzzled: ...anyway which one of those is a proper team again?? :barfy:

TP 16-Feb-2005 22:36

Just to make it easy for you .... :frog:

Yamaha, Suzuki and Ducati all use coil spring clutches, we cannot see the Honda choice because of their turbine cooling air cover. Proton, Kawasaki and WCM use diaphragm spring systems with metal plates, Aprilia use an AP based, Aprilia modified, carbon system.

Andy, if MotoGP teams can make it work, reagardless of grid position then they have to have some credibility right? Notwithstanding any issues causing low grid positions directly relating to slippers.

electricsheep 16-Feb-2005 22:42

I go the STM 48 tooth evo to replace the horrible standard slipper that came on my 749R. It's a fantastic bit of kit. I was also influenced by the number of people picking clutch posts out of the gravel at rockingham.

Of course the STM might not do any better.

andyb 16-Feb-2005 22:43

But if they make decisions like using those sort of clutches.....Its no wonder there crap. What other dumb ideas do they use??

Apart from a poor v5 thats never been any good and sounds flat(only surpassed by the Suzuki attempt), fly by wire throttles, painting their bikes green..........

andyb 16-Feb-2005 22:44

Mr sheep, I know where your bike is or has recently been...I bet god commented on it!!:frog:

TP 16-Feb-2005 22:46

I was considering the centre spring clutch for the very same reason ans Rob, I was standing next Paul (Rockhopper) who I think took the clutch cover off Loz's bike (sorry mate :( ) and saw the posts fall on the ground!

Having said that, I plumped for the Ducati Corse slipper which has worked a treat and I'm very happy. Mind you, I have one of those near bomb-proof clutch covers that Nelly is doing now. Awesome! You could beat someone to death with one without raising a sweat! Or, extract a confession .. whatever you're up to ;)

andyb 16-Feb-2005 22:49

When Lozs' clutch was assisted by him to fail at Rocky, It was me that supplied the replacement and kit to fit with Neil.

...

True! All true!
I've now had fitted a Speedymoto bullet proof pressure plate, and a rather bling open cover, both supplied by Nelly. It's only a matter of time now before I can report on how well they stand up to a R-H lowside.
:D

andyb 16-Feb-2005 22:51

Forks are good, you wont regret it.well nothing a little cry wont sort out!
Tp, i bet you advocate hydrolastic suspension aswell!

Still amazed that you had a spare with you and that I was out on track a bit later.

Still grateful to you and Paul for your help!

Wish I could track down who it was who gave me brake lever peg to replace the one I ground away!

andyb 16-Feb-2005 22:58

We were doing fine til all them overseaers came........

Jon 16-Feb-2005 23:00

If I can add my two pennys worth. I had a STM evo std clutch didn't like it from the off. Looked cool but the action was not smooth and started to slip after only a 100miles or so. On inspection I noticed that the pressure plates had scratched up quite badly. This in my opinon was due to the fierce action and the sintered bronze friction material used. Rattler also had oneon hi 996sps. This also slipped and I don't think he ever got it sorted. Sayng that I had a go on Rattlers 996R which had a stm evo slipper fitted, and that was fine. My choice is the bucci slipper wth carbon plates. I know forsure that If my clutch goes pear shaped, I only need a std set of plates to get me going. Has for wear on the basket, yes the 48 tooth is superior, but if you have matched ergal, you don't have a problem

Well Krige has retired ....

We're only two points ahead of the Saints, I figured that the Stoop is just around the corner so I picked the multi-coloured ones to support .. wish they'd lift their game though :(

Sorry Jon, I'm not sure you're allowed to post a slipper opinion without first revealing which rugby club you support!

andyb 17-Feb-2005 19:53

I have him down as a footballer........:frog:
