You 90's guy....

Twinfan 15-Feb-2005 13:25

2005 model has the new top fairing - wider and without the vents. It also comes with the assymetric Termi system in a box and radially mounted Brembos. I think it has had a slight engine tweak too, but I could be wrong...

COL595 15-Feb-2005 13:46

Twinfan - only the 2005 'S' comes with the 'Termi in a box'.

Michael J 15-Feb-2005 13:53

I think the "S" comes with Ohlins front and rear whereas the base model comes with Showa.

Michael J 15-Feb-2005 13:56

Oh yes, if you want black, you can't have a mono

octo 15-Feb-2005 14:04

I know about the styling changes etc, I was thinking more engine, parts etc, of those 2 particular models:

2004 999S
2005 999

(still being watched) :o

clint 15-Feb-2005 14:33

2005 999S also comes with the r version box swingarm.
ohlins damper. ohlins front & rear suspension.
143bhp.
Some kind of new lighter plastic fairings.

Clint

Twinfan 15-Feb-2005 14:41

Sorry - misread the post! Yep, only the 2005 999S has Ohlins/radials/Termis.

2004 999S - Ohlins all round, non radial Brembo serie Oros. Mono or Bip in red or yellow. 136bhp (claimed)

2005 999 - Showa all round with Ti Nitrade forks, non radial Brembo serie Oros. Mono in red only. Bip in red or black. 140bhp (claimed). 999R swingarm.

To be honest, engines will be near enough identical spec.

hhmm,

2004 999S £10,000
2005 999 £11,000

give or take a few hundred, what would you go for?

RA

dickieducati 15-Feb-2005 15:13

2004 999s

Michael J 15-Feb-2005 16:29

Why not check out back issues of some of the mags. Those that have ridden the '05 999 think its sublime.

Ditto.

Now check out what's more expensive... a swingarm like the one on all 05 models have (like the one on 04 R) or the Ohlins?
Ah.... and where will you use the bike mostly?? If it's on the street then you won't notice that much the Ohlins difference.

So i say..... get a 2005 999S :D

dickieducati 15-Feb-2005 17:03

you'll notice the swingarm difference even less. in fact not at all. go for the ohlins.

beancounter 15-Feb-2005 17:04

Ducsoon, that recommendation is based on ...........?

Your personal experience of the 999 range ?

Have you bought one yet ?

btw the superiority of Ohlins suspension is easily apparent on the road.

Just based on personal taste and not on experience.
Like dickieducati said you'll notice even less the swingarm difference. (granted)
But.... i don't know... i really don't like the pre 05 999's swingarms and i prefer the new front look so i think i would go for a standard 05.

Nope, still haven't got one.
I was considering trading in my 04 R1 for a 998 but i just called my dealer (where i got the MV) and we're negociating a 05 999S :D.
Let's see how this goes.....

clint 15-Feb-2005 18:43

I had a 748 with showa's great handling bike, loved it.
Had a standard 749 which i could never get quite right in the handling department.
Currently 05 999s Ohlins superb handling. And i certainly can feel the difference road riding.

Clint.

:smug:

Gareth 15-Feb-2005 18:55

I had the same dilema. A new 2004 999S or 2005 999 Base. Tried both in a test ride and the fuelling was much better on the 2005 999 demonstrator than on the 2004 999S demo. Could be that the 2005 999 only had 200 miles on it and the 999S had 1500 but the 2005 bike felt smoother, and felt better screwed together.

In the end I opted for the 2005 999 Base (red mono) as the handling will be much the same, although the Ohlins will have a slight advantage, but the engine power is very similar and the fuelling map, in my test ride, was better on the 2005 bike. I also get the better styling..imho.

Bike arrives early April...can't wait !!

CONGRATS!!! then :)
I think you did the right choice.
Yeah, and i bet you can't wait :D;)

nathanhu 16-Feb-2005 00:14

the 05 999 has a heavier crank than the 999s from 04 and also no ti rods and milder cams

COL595 16-Feb-2005 14:45

The bigger fairing on the 2005 bikes make them a better bet if you're lanky (like me), but the deals available on the '04 bikes are hard to ignore. Given your choices, I'd go for the 2004 'S'. But if you can find a bit more dosh, go for the 2005 'S' - no question.

That'll be quite a bit more dosh - around £3500 ;)
