Paint or Powder?

Any advice on alloy wheel finish,2k paint or powder coating.Any recommended powder coaters in Cheshire/Stoke areas.Gloss or satin?

tony h 18-Feb-2005 23:30

paint em not powder i reckon satin black looks quite good on 5 spokes with a new set of rim decals

Nigel Booker 18-Feb-2005 23:50

Tony,
why paint? If powder is applied properly with a decent etching primer its far more durable.

tony h 19-Feb-2005 00:03

not so much a durability issue but i reckon you get a better finish with paint i.e shine & depth {fair enough not with satin} + there.s more quality painters around than powder coaters

Nigel Booker 19-Feb-2005 00:12

Tony,

I understand what your saying but my main concern with the finish on wheels is how will it stand up to tyre changes, stone chips and cleaning and with a decent aplicator powder does come up almost as good as paint.

tony h 19-Feb-2005 00:41

suppose it depends on what u want my carbon seats not as durable as the original but looks that bit better a good quality lacquer is well up to the job my old arse6 wheels lasted 4 year of track /work/thrash & i still got the little xtra bling factor

marksduc748 19-Feb-2005 16:07

powder without a doubt, had a set of my marvics painted in 2 pack and was chipped in one season. so powder for me from now on. just make sure you get them blasted yourself. which was easy for me cos own a sand blasting company. :D

sharpo 19-Feb-2005 20:43

Was gonna powder but painted instead cos I didn't want to remove the bearings to get em blasted.

Gloss gloss gloss.

deej 19-Feb-2005 21:23

im toying with getting my 3 spokes sprayed balck with the red motogp pin stripes, good idea or nooo ??

HANCYM 19-Feb-2005 22:54

Check this chap out. I can recomend him. Been in the business for years and produces real quality work.

Had my mags painted by a firm in Leicestershire called Belmont Metal Finishing 01664 822482. Cost £35 per loose (no tyre) wheel.
They did a spot on job and were worth the journey:burn:

Gee that's pretty good I reckon!

I'm tempted to get my 5 spokes done black!

geoff m 21-Feb-2005 23:54

Because I am a REALLY nice guy.....

I will confirm the cost, (I asked about getting some wheels for my Firestorm powder coated in Purple as few months ago)

Plus, as I live only a few miles from Cheadle, BUT I commute regularly between Cheadle and FELTHAM (ten mins from Twickenham ?) I COULD collect and return for you.......but it might be a two /three week turnaround, depends on work schedule.
Just a thought.

What a nice bloke I am....
and no, I wont nick your wheels..hehe

Yes Feltham is just around the corner- oue current secondary data centre is in Feltham and I work in Sunbury quite a bit these days ...

Two to three weeks would be fine at the moment, because the wheels are off the bike and not due to go back on for a week or two yet. Would be intereseted to know if it would all pan out in that timeframe.

Let me know Geoff?

You're a top bloke :D

TP 22-Feb-2005 01:54

Oh and I used to own a Firestorm back in Oz, very under-rated bike with a *****e fuel range!

geoff m 22-Feb-2005 10:35

Fuel range ???? Firestorm ??? you cant use the those words in the same sentence !!!

MIND YOU......I get about the same out of the 916.....or maybe I is raggin it a bit too much?

I love my storm, actually faster than 916 .....but it is a bit "tweaked"
Certainly quicker for top gear roll ons, have to change down to 5th to keep up on the duke, (son has storm)

check it out www.firestorm.me.uk

Let me have a tel number and I will arrange with you to collect wheels,

Okey Dokey..

Just got price for powder coating from my contact..

£25 per wheel, any colour you like, (they will have a very close match if not the exact one)

turaround is three to four days.

they need the wheel in paint free condition, they do not do preparation work, just coating, but you can leave the bearings in-situ so you can knock them out afterwards and leave a clean spindle core. (you will obviosly need to renew bearings,or mask the centres off to prevent filling the spindle cores with "paint"

Hope this helps

That's pretty good. I'm not really sure what I'd need to do to the wheels to prep them, maybe sand blasting?

They are off the bike at the moment so it would be ideal ...

geoff m 22-Feb-2005 23:03

Sand blasting....

If you want I will give you number so they can explain to you how they want them and what colours they have.

THey called me today to say that they will do them for £30.00 , both wheels, as long as they have the colour in stock.
I thought that was pretty damn good.

If you want the number let me know. I MIGHT be in Feltham one day next week.

Cheers

I will let you know when I am in Feltham and see if we can arrange something, I normally stay at the St Giles hotel opp the station, So easy place to meet up.

Don't sand blast use Nitromorse paint stripper. Sand blasting leaves the rims very rough and it is very hard to get the coating off. Go with the paint stripper as you can do them in about 20 mins per wheel. Hope it helps.

Paint

Maybe too late for you but i had a wheel repaired and painted by 4th Dimension, spot on job they took tyre and discs off and turned round in 2 days. their in shepprton 5 mins from feltham cant remember tel no now but was reccomended by Ducati London South try them for their no 0208 689 6998.

I looked at a powder coaters stand at ally pally the colour looked so dead no shine at all looked cheap and orrible.
