cant make a carbon hugger fit

I got hold of a nice looking cabon hugger from ebay and finally got around to trying to fit it. Arfter a bit of messing about i got it on but its not right at all. The hugger runs all the way to the top of the wheel but about the last inch of it is hard onto the tyre. Also it seems to be uneven and more on the chain side than the other.:sniff: It is a DP part but could it be bent or something? It doesnt look like it would take being bent back at all. The only thing i can think of is the wheel could be in the wrong place (its at about 5 o'clock from the open side of the wheel) If i could put it at about 7 o'clock i think i may have more room or am i being dumb? (not that i can because the chain isnt long enough anyway) It only had a new chain fitted by Ducati Leeds 300 miles ago so i think it must be the hugger thats wrong. What are my chances of getting money back from the seller on ebay do you think? it was a bike shop so is that better than some random bloke?
Sorry for the rant!!
Does anyone know how to sort this.
Thanks
Chris

was it a private seller or a company, i got a swing arm guard, it is c**p, if i forced it on then it would split.

just read your post again, bike shop. send it back.

You need to line it up central, and i suspect apply some sort of mounting to the right side of the hugger.

Some cowboys use double sided tape or velcro. It wants the swing arm drilling and mounting with a bolt to be a tip top job!:smug:

Mine is drilled, I think it's the best way to go.

Yep get it drilled my dealer did mine feels quite solid now, he showed me one not drilled and it was very loose.

I have the DP long one, as they do a shorter one to. Im happy offers good protection to:D:D:D

mine seem to be hard on the tyre though. Its also making contact with the swingarm where the hole on the rhs is so im not sure how much difference it would make.

Chris,

Not sure what you mean about the position of your axle but this is how it should be:

Centre of axle in the 4.30 to 5 o'clock position in relation to the centre of the eccentric when viewed from the sprocket side.

Sounds like yours ain't in the right place, would explain why the hugger's hard to the tyre.

Cheers, Neil

I have seen some people put a small bracket (10mmin length) on chain guard rear fixing hole so as the hugger sits higher.

Arrrrrrgh nasty!!

From the sproket side its at about 7 o'clock (red circle) How do i move it to 5o'clock (blue circle) without a longer chain? How could ducati leeds get it wrong?:flame:

I think this may be the better option. It wouldnt solve the fact that it sits more on one side that the other. It runs along the edge of the tyre on the open side but hangs over by about 10 - 15mm on the swing arm side. It helps if i push the chain guard in!!

neil748r 22-Feb-2005 12:41

Chris,

The bad news mate, is you can't move it. If the chain's tensioned correctly then that's it.

From your diagram, Ducati Leeds haven't actually got it wrong. 4.30 to 5 o'clock is just the "ideal" position. The most important thing is that the horizontal centre line through the axle is below the horizontal centre line through the eccentric.

What size sprockets are you running? If you've gone up at the rear then it's possible a new longer chain is in order. Adding a couple of links to the chain would probably put it all where you'd like to see it.

Hope that helps, Neil.

ziggi 22-Feb-2005 12:57

Have you got a 180 section tyre? They have a taller profile and this won't help the fitment. I disposed of my hugger when I fitted the 180 tyre as it rubbed. I also had to spacer it a bit to get it to fit properly with the 190 section tyre. I had a proper DP one.

TP 22-Feb-2005 13:01

I run a 180 in mine and still have plenty of clearance, mine is screwed into the swing arm on the RHS which I believe raises the height of the hugger giving you more clearance.

ziggi 22-Feb-2005 13:49

I think it's a combination of sprocket, chain, 180 tyre and crap hugger. If memory serves me correct, the Casoli hugger fits very well with all combinations.

chris99 22-Feb-2005 14:23

Ok so my options are:

1) Make the chain longer and so move the wheel away from the hugger (Can i buy links?)

2) Change 180 to 190 tyre? ( whats the pros/cons here)

3) loose the hugger

4) Fit a spacer - This could be my option i think. If i could raise the bit by the chain guard by10mm it would tip the whole hugger and give me some more space. Does anyone have a picture of hoe the DP part "should fit" from both side so i can check against mine.

I have done a piccy to check i am thinking along the right lines. Please dont laugh to hard. Is it about right? Just a strip of metal with two holes in?

dukess1999 22-Feb-2005 15:09

Re spacer, that replicates more or less what I did and no probs so far (I have a DP hugger).

deej 22-Feb-2005 19:16

chris i have a standard ductai hugger on mine and it fits fine

i'll email you some pictures that i have as its worth putting it on correctly

deej 22-Feb-2005 19:25

you have mail plus about 8 photos

hope you got broadband

hooley 23-Feb-2005 18:27

Chris,

If you raise it by 10mm you may run into clearance issues with the exhausts when the rear suspension is fully compressed.

I did and now have a small hole where the hot exhausts have burnt through. Bugg3r...

Thanks for the photo's Dave. Will have another look now i have calmed down a bit. Thanks for the heads up mate - will go for less than 10mm if i can

Gaz 748 24-Feb-2005 23:13

Had the same problem when went up two teeth on the rear sprocket, fitted new chain with two extra links 96 i think, prolem solved.

deej 24-Feb-2005 23:18
