Is the chicane that they installed last year for the BSB boys still on the track or have they removed it?

skidlids 24-Feb-2005 14:06

As it was installed on the grounds of safety I should think it is still there for the bikes.
Even club racers are travelling fast through that bit, at the September meet my mate Simon Knowlson was every bit as quick as most of the BSB regulars that were there, even Big Rob Mac was impressed.
Simon will now be racing at the BSB meetings this year in one of the MCRCB Superstock classes on a R1.

I raced on it a couple of times last year. It's very, very hard on the brakes and one at a time going through it. It's a real make or break for the finishing positions as when you come out of it, you're hard on the gas for the final corner and the sprint to the line. First out of the chicane should have a huge advantage, especially on similarly powered bikes, the guy behind has little chance of overtaking unless the guy in front messes up or the guy behind has better gearing, a bit more power or gets on the gas earlier.

Last year I saw a terrific crash there in the race I was in and also saw loads when we watched the other races. The chicane is created by simply placing some bales wrapped in plastic across the track and an extra piece of tarmac that looks like it's been laid by Ben Doon & Phil McCracken. As I was heading towards it, I spotted the guy in front was leaving a bit of a gap on his right, so I decided to block pass him by coming up his inside and braking alongside him, elbows at the ready. If I could hold the line, one of us would have to give. As I did this, some guy came up the other side of the guy I was trying to outbrake and tried to get into the single lane first. The guy in the middle gave way first, (wise move as it happens). I went for it and the other guy on the outside was left heading straight for the bales, so he braked ultra hard and the back slowly started coming up off the ground. As he got closer, it seemed to go into slow motion as his rear end came over the top and he amazingly left the bike in a totally straight body position and did a full turn over the bales as the bike smashed into them, just as I was on my way past them. Totally awesome crash.

Desmo Due will have real fun at this bit, must come and watch:lol:
