disc bolts. has anyone changed their disc bolts for ones with a smaller head, if so which ones and from where. if not which are the best to go with. Price? just changed my brake set up and the bolts are just brushing the speedo housing. thankyou. |
B&Q ???? ... then again, maybe not this time eh ???:) |
do you have shares in them Dibble? |
Got some stainless dome headed ones of Nelly. Dont know where he got em from but give him a bell, he might have some more? |
|
|
Dibble thought you might have suggested, Homebase,Wicks,Do It All, Currys,Dixons,Powerhouse.:D:D |
Adam, Normal cap head stainless bolts do interfere with the speedo drive...all you have to do is file about 2-3mm off the drive where it interferes and - hey presto, problem solved! I have done this on my old 748 and my new(er) 916SPS and have now on-going problems. Cheers, Richard |
Stupid question, but why don't you use the standard ducati ones? They have a low head, but unlike the button headed allen screws, have a nice, deep hex. Not that expensive, even from Duc. Rgds, Rob |
They are cadmium plated steel - they go furry after a couple of years. Is that a good enough reason?:alien: |
Ahh, bling. Completely understand now. |
Not 100% bling actually..........furriness equates to corrosion damage to protective cad plate which leads to corrosion of structural bolt which leads to (ultimately) failure and "Oh my gawd, no brakes" situation....... See, always follow the mantra preached by the great guru: "BLING IS GOOD, BLING IS SHINEY (But also can save you from death)" :pig: |
But wouldn't you rather the cheap bolt corrode than the expensive carrier? I was under the impression that the cadmium is sacrificial. This post of Shazaam's was linked to from the thread Jasper refers to above and suggests the same. http://217.199.188.40/xmb/viewthread...=9368#pid76885 But, the mantra I like ;) |
Quote:
Yeah, okay, you have a point there. However........if the disc carrier is correctly protected (anodised/painted etc), then that should prevent dissimilar metal contact and the carrier won't corrode. I dunno, bikes are a bit wierd...in my day job, I would have a head fit if anybody even suggested putting stainless bolts into aluminium structure! Likewise, if anybody suggested putting carbon anywhere near ally I would also do my nut!! Never mind...just keep chanting the mantra!! :burn: |
I know a guy who works at Harris Performance who said he can machine 1-2mm off the heads so they will be clear of the speedo. |
so need to pop down to B&Q for an orbital sander then ??? |
Dibble, that did amuse me, cant stop chuckling. very good. |
Going through myself, at the moment, Adam. From previous experience, I'd recommend using torx head as the hex heads are notorious for rounding off when you want to remove them. I am going for a set of these: ![]() Works about at about 4 quid each. Yes, mostly bling I must admit. If you have any interest we could combine the order. [Edited on 1-3-2005 by Felix] |
Felix, are these the same size as the originals? mainly the head size. |
Yes, at least they are on my bike. Head height is 5 mm, head diameter 13 mm, made by Poggipolini in Italy, official titanium supplier to Ducati Corse. Ordering mine tomorrow. [Edited on 1-3-2005 by Felix] |
thanks for the offer Felix but I will try to get either smaller headed ones or ill get my ones machined. |
How big is the head on your disc bolts? |
What's so awful about using using an ordinary hex head stainless setscrew (at least on the speedo drive side) instead of an Allen head? |
Aside from looks maybe, probably not much. |
Titanium MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM! Even more addictive than carbon. I can handle it?? What next "class A" magnesium?? Looks like I heading for rehab............................................. .... AKA the bank managers office! Ray |
