6 Nations

England or Ireland - and why?

Me I think Ireland because of the form they're in and their midfield pairing.

England are unsettled and Andy Robinson doesn't appear to be tactically astute.

jobr 27-Feb-2005 15:21

Heart says England, heads says Ireland.

Think Robinson has lost the plot plus we have lost two many "big game" players.

TP 27-Feb-2005 15:21

Kick off is at 3pm BTW Jools ... coverage starts at 2:30

Jools 27-Feb-2005 15:34

Yes mate, gotta watch the build up.

I'm with the heart says England, head says Ireland school of thought. Ireland, and Wales come to that, seem to be on fire right now.

I'd like to say that England are in a rebuilding mode, but they're certainly missing the sort of rock solid performances that people like Johnson inspired from the pack (a big man to replace in every sense) and of course the reliability of Wilkinson's boot.

The captaincy looks to have stiffled Jason Robinson a bit too...gotta go and watch now

Brent 27-Feb-2005 15:37

Ireland. They are a quality team and we're not. Our rebuiling phase has the trench dug, but the foundations aren't in yet....

andyb 27-Feb-2005 15:59

Watched Martin Johnson/neil Back yesterday at Npton, (oh did i say Npton won!!!)

There is something about the temprement of those two! Natural leaders......something England are missing at the moment!

Still nothing like an Aussie telling us how to play eh TP!!!!:lol: or the Davis Campese of DSC!:D:P

You're pretty sensitive to anything I say about rugby Andy - a few issues to get over mate? You think Andy Robinson is a masterful tactician?

TP 27-Feb-2005 17:52

This is for you Andy

 :frog:

That was rubbish today! Woodenspoon, maybe!

moto748 27-Feb-2005 19:09

I thought England looked quite uninspired. They never really looked like they were going to win the match. Way too much tackling the man without the ball going on.

Ireland/Wales should be quite a game, though. Fair play to the Welsh for getting a result (although only just) in Paris.

TP 27-Feb-2005 19:12

I spent most of the afternoon flicking between the rugby and the Carling Cup and I missed out on seeing what happened with the England disallowed try in the first half. They were saying it was because the winger (not sure who was on that wing - Cueto?) was in front of Barkley when he kicked for the corner but the angles I saw looked like it was a fair try? There were no decent TV angles ...

Why was it disallowed?

neilkeogh 27-Feb-2005 19:35

Good luck to the Irish,

Typical BBC bias panel trying to find excuses as to why the English lost and not giving credit to the Irish

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Jools 27-Feb-2005 19:51

Yes, it was a Cueto try that was disallowed for offside off Charlie Hodgson's kick to the corner, and although the TV angles weren't perfect it looked like a try to me as well. I don't know what the touch judge thought he was at, cos he wasn't even looking at Cueto as he started his run.

Have to agree with Brian Moore as well, when Josh Lewsey went over it was either a try or he was held up, either way the refereeing decsion was pretty poor.

Agree with Andy B though, there were individual players that had a reasonable game. Martin Corry was solid, Lewsey was good and I thought Ollie Barkley and Jamie Noon punched a few holes throught the defence, but there is no natural leader to pull it all together.

It's starting to seem like a long time since you could feel sure that the forwards would be totally dominant.

Fair play to Ireland though, they looked the better team throughout the first 60 minutes and deserved it

I have always questioned A robinsons' ability as the coach. I think England lack direction, leadership and the ability to build a win, something the Irish did!

Yes there were some howling decisions but you recognise them and play them to your advantage.

TP 27-Feb-2005 20:14

Ahh, it was a Hodgson kick. The touchy was right there but I didn't see the touchy raise his flag at all.

I've heard on the BBC rugby message boards that the ref had ruled that the ball had been pushed back infield and therefore was an Irish scrum. Looked a bit iffy to me, maybe he should have gone upstairs ...

The only other iffy thing I saw (I was flicking remember, before someone jumps down my throat, not you Jools) was the Corry try. O'Gara was tackled and brought to the ground illegally so it should have been a penalty there and then, not a try.

I still think AR is not quite there tactically. If you remember the Australia game at the end of last year the mauls were killing us and it was identified before the game as a weakness but we only saw it played in the second half after Aus were ahead. Bad decision and I think that cost England the game.

I saw a great kick take and return from Lewsey! He's a great player.

Fair play to you mate. There were howling decisions both ways though don't forget ...

andyb 27-Feb-2005 20:25

Your getting confused mate........there were actually two tries that could of been,............One for Cueto, a cross kick jobbie ruled that he was in front, and another that was the push over, which what ever way you look at the referees decision didnt make sense.

He never went to the video ref for either. still...........:borg:

TP 27-Feb-2005 20:27

No Andy, not confused. As I said, howling decisions both ways. The Cueto try, the decision not to go upstairs on the Lewsey try and the Corry try when O'Gara was illegally tackled behind the ruck and brought to the floor. That was a penalty to Ireland and should never have been a Corry try.

Road Runner 27-Feb-2005 20:32

Very poor Enland show, thought the ref favored the Irish WOODEN SPOON. FOR US

Scottch 27-Feb-2005 21:16

World champions eh

Bwahahahahaha!!

andyb 27-Feb-2005 21:23

Mind you the scotland v Italy game was a classic.................:lol:

Scottch 27-Feb-2005 21:27

Remind me who won?

andyb 27-Feb-2005 21:31

Yeah, great victory, not!............. Scotland are much better at playing the party pooper. Have they got to play Ireland or Wales still?

Scottch 27-Feb-2005 21:35

Oh, was it a Scottish victory then?

andyb 27-Feb-2005 21:42

You want to set your standards a bit higher mate...............:D

Scottch 27-Feb-2005 21:44

No thanks, mate, I'll take a win over defeat any day.

Try it sometime!! :bouncy:

Can you still see out of that hole Andy? No, keep digging ....

[Edited on 27-2-2005 by tp-996]

Scottch 27-Feb-2005 22:01

Absolutely.

You know it's a great day when your national team has a win.

How did your team do again Andy?
Shame, really !

andyb 27-Feb-2005 22:02

I remind you of the comments made earlier, where it was aknowledged how poor England are at the moment, but thats compared to setting a standard of World Champions!(you remember tp.....1999)

However, lets not get too excited about a Scottish victory please..........especially over Italy!

Scottch 27-Feb-2005 22:08

You're right Andy.

I'd far rather get excited over an English defeat!

World champions  really??? :bouncy:

Sniping at Scotlands win on the day you guys lost isn't doing much for you and your credibilty mate. Neither is reminding me that Aus were better world champs in 99 (and in 91 too, remember we're the only nation to have won it twice) because I know that. I just don't need to remind you of it.

Let goooooooooo ....

andyb 27-Feb-2005 22:21

He started it...........:P and who said anything about BETTER???
And if were talking about being gracious in losing, let me remind you of your Prime ministers face and attitude when he presented those trophies at RWC 2003!
