996R/998R ?

Right to anyone who has had either , i am hoping to change my 998Bp in July & am looking info on both of these bikes

The budget is pointing towards the 996R the head the 998R , finding it hard to make the mental leap to the 998R money but also having probs with going back a year to 2001 for the 996R
Will the 6R be that much better & worth going back a year ,plus if i go the 6R what would i expect power wise as i could maybe stretch to some mods as well
But to go to the 8R i would really be pushing it money wise :( ,would it be really worth it

Any thoughts or coments are welcome

Ps this decisions is not taken lightly as divorce/bankrupcy looms with either choice so try & keep the coments reasonably sensable :D:D:frog:

MaccLad 04-Mar-2005 11:07

No doubt about it go for the 996R. Stunning. - Chillo may be able to offer more of an insight as he's owned both.

Dibble 04-Mar-2005 11:09

The 996R is an iconic bike that will retain far more of its value.

The 998 will NEVER be in the same league ....

And I doubt either you or I are good enough to either notice or utilise the performance differences ....

Personally, my money would be on the 6 ........ but I haven't got any money so my opinions rather irrelevant .... lol

Get a 999R, they are getting cheaper by the day if you want the last ounce of performance .....

Whatever you do, buy what YOU want ...

:)

Totto 04-Mar-2005 11:15

That was quick , forgot to add I do not Like the 999 range , i had a test on the 999bp hoping the ride would make me forget the looks but it didn't :(

I tried the first 999 when they came out as I was looking to replace my 996, I hated it, so bought a Bostrom Rep, and then had an impulse purchase for a 999R, I rode it for the first time on Sunday a whopping 30 miles, and I must say it is so much better than the box standard 999, it actually didn't feel too different from the Bostrom, but saying that I haven't rode a bike for 6 months, so comparisons are few and far between.

Thanks for that Dibbs, buy not too cheap eh!

Mine is a 2002 Totto, still lots of late registered low milage ones out there. she seems to get faster each time I take her out.

Ray 04-Mar-2005 15:37

I have ridden both a 998R and a 998s in standard form. The 998s is supposed to have the pretty much the same motor as the 996r and no word of a lie it felt gutless compared to the 998r. If there was only 3 BHP difference between them as the specs say then they are flipping big horses.

The 998r has a bit more carbon/different seat unit.

The 996r was the last of line as it were to win the WSB championship so in some peoples eyes that makes it more desirable. The 998r was the highest spec bike in the line, the 998FE (final edition) was basically a 998s with Ohlins forks.

As a ride I doubt that you would be disappointed with either but if it was me looking at a 996r I would want a test ride just to make sure it didn't disappoint on the "go" front. On my experience so far I would go with the 998r.

At the end of last years riding season there was about 2k difference in the asking price on average between a 996r and a 998r.

yer pays yer money and makes yer choice.

Ray.

adam 04-Mar-2005 17:55

gutless, thats fighting talk:P that would have been the last statment to make. If anyone went on the 996R and found it wanting in the "go" department, then they should be racing, for us mere mortals that motor is way above what we can use. For me when it comes to buying a bike I go with what I like, not others.

all that said and done go get yourself that 996R, with the money you will save you can buy yourself some "go":lol:

Ray 04-Mar-2005 18:42

Adam,

calm down calm down

I was speaking comparatively, no way is a 996r gutless per se.

I just rode a 998s and a 998r on the same day on the same roads and that was how it felt. Maybe the r was a "good un" and the S a "bad un" I'll never know.

Racing has nowt to do with it, a comparison was the crux of the matter.

Both the 996r and 998r are fantastic bikes. and the 998s, 998bip, 998FE, 996, 916, 955, 853, 748.............................

:P

Ray.

TP 04-Mar-2005 18:49

Don't forget though that the 996R has higher spec engine internals etc than the 998S so even though they are essentially the same engine they will make their power and torque differently and feel differently.

I would hazard a guess that the R has a close ration gear box as well? Can anyone confirm? So that would make it completely different on the 'ar$eometer' as well.

998R

I reckon as well, the 996R is the more desirable, in terms of championships etc.

Rattler 04-Mar-2005 18:55

We go through this discussion about once every 2 months.

Get either - you won't be dissapointed.

I know which R I would get - the ZX10R ;)

Tim:ninja:

adam 04-Mar-2005 18:55

i was only kidding Ray;) I know what you you meant. I have only been on 748, 748R and 996R., the 996R is a joy to own.:sing:

adam 04-Mar-2005 18:57

Tim, R you Kidding me:o

The ZX10R is an animal - far too quick for me!! In a straightline its an absolute missile and when driving out of bends I had to be pretty careful with the throttle and really couldn't use all of the 165bhp on offer ;D ;)

It was interesting to see how many of the prostock / superstock (if that's the right class) boys were testing with these in Cartagena. We even had the BSB Vivaldi ZX10Rs testing just after us.

It seems for the budget racer in the 1000cc class, the ZX10R may be the weapon of choice?

I did manage to have a few laps on Pedro's 749R - If I was to get a Ducati R again, then I might well be heading in that direction, such light turning and just wanted to be revved (which I didn't - honest pedro!!!), very stable and inspired tons of confidence .:o

The 998r has the same ratios as the S in the box.

The torque and power figures are the same 996r/998s

The S probably won't have titanium rods but I wouldn't bet on it.

In this weeks comic (MCN) there was a 996r for less than a 998s advertised below it.

996r & 998r prices are still coming down on the secondhand market. The time of year can have an influence on asking/selling prices.

If you want race heritage its the 6r if its the best spec motor ever in the classic shape its the 8r. The 8r motor is the same as the 03/04 999r

Ray.

chillo 06-Mar-2005 03:29

996R has the heritage but the 998R is THE ducati to have, trust me!
end of story........

adam 06-Mar-2005 09:16

anyone spot the deliberate mistake in Chillo's post? I did,

996R has the heritage SO 996R is THE bike to have, trust me! end of story.

you nearly had us mate.:D:D

chillo 06-Mar-2005 11:19

they are both fantastic (virtually identical) bikes, but the motor in 998R felt much stronger (and smoother) which is what i liked about it! IMHO

Felix 06-Mar-2005 11:24

Yep, Chillo is right, the shorter stroke 998R motor is a good bit better. Remember, the 996R motor was the first testastretta motor. They were bound to make it better, which they did for the 998R.

But also a good bit more expensive !!!!

If i get the 6R it would not cost me to much but the 8R would put me back in the hands of the bank manager again :(

Is it really worth the extra ???

adam 06-Mar-2005 11:39

thats your choice really, dont want you blaming us for your debt. As already said, they are both superb bikes.

Felix 06-Mar-2005 11:55

Test ride them both, then make up your mind.

steve98r 07-Mar-2005 23:09

Having owned both the 998s and the 998r it just hast to be the 998r

steve98r 07-Mar-2005 23:13

I have got to learn how to spell And use this computer properly

rcgbob44 07-Mar-2005 23:17

I still like the 998R...but I`m biased coz I like the 998

The 996R is a 998 !!!

Ray 08-Mar-2005 00:07

Lord R,

The 998r is 999cc but luckily that doesn't make it a 999!!

a ZX10r is not 10cc (the band):frog:

I think you've been been riding abroad in the rain too much!!

Sorry I didn't say Hello at the AGM but your courtiers were so discrete I didn't realise it was you.

Totto,

Remember the words used in a certain hair products commercial?

I can't see either a 996r or 998r being a residual value disaster area in the years to come. They have both taken the big initial drop.

Ray.

As long as you don't crash them or spend silly amounts of money on unnecessary bits of bling - you'll be fine Mario!!!!;)

Totto 08-Mar-2005 21:22

Think i a m heading towards a 996R ,seems the general opinion is that both bikes ( 6R/8R) are more than most will need & the 6R suits my budget at the moment , so unless i will the lotto or similar its a 6R for me

Waiting for Jasper to Say I told you so :D

adam 09-Mar-2005 18:34

well done Totto, excellent choice.:roll::roll:
