If your buying a chain, why do you need a smaller sprocket?

I was on the phone to Nelly when you posted this talking about a chain ... I forget exactly but I believe it was £69'ish for a Tsubaki bad boy (new type I just invented ;) ) so I'll be having that and changing the gearing to 14/39

andyb 07-Mar-2005 20:14

Dont forget you need a tsubaki special chain rivetter if you use their chain, as apposed to any std one for a DID chain.

adam 07-Mar-2005 20:21

in what way are they different andy?

Mike Davis 07-Mar-2005 20:30

DID is a centre punch type(spreading the inside outwards) where as the Tsubaki is like Renthal Afam and Regina it mushrooms the head over.

Robsom Racing do Talon sprockets. In fact they do everything.

didnt know that one, just about to put a Tsubaki chain on.

andyb 07-Mar-2005 20:31

Which one do you have?I have allways used DiD chains from bandc as i have a std splitter and fitter.

I understood that for whatever reason with the shape of tsubaki pins or links they needed their own equipment for fitting?

andyb 07-Mar-2005 20:32

Looks like youll have to get your big hammer out again mate...............:lol:

adam 07-Mar-2005 20:33

all I know is its a 525 Tsubaki, got it from Harris

Thought you were just looking and comparing prices.you little ligger!:frog:

adam 07-Mar-2005 20:35

my brother in law is a bike mechanic so will drag him round with the right fitting gear. Always handy having someone close in the trade.

andyb 07-Mar-2005 20:36

The smart owner would of fitted a new front sprocket along with their carrier and new rear to accomodate fitting a 520 chain.

adam 07-Mar-2005 20:40

I was advised to have a 525 by Harris, and along with the chain I also purchased a Renthal 38 rear and standard front. Nice little combination.

andyb 07-Mar-2005 20:43

what length did you get?

Mike Davis 07-Mar-2005 20:47

Have you ever had a DID break on you Andy ?

andyb 07-Mar-2005 20:50

No. I know some did got a bad press a while back.
I have allways used the ERV2, as recommended by JHP.:D

adam 07-Mar-2005 21:56

andy they gave me an 108 link, way too long, dont know why so need to remove a few links. When I got the chain home un wrapped it only to find no link, they sent one a couple of days later though.

andyb 07-Mar-2005 22:25

Much better to be too long that not enough. You can position the hub exactly right, cut the chain and away you go!
