Fork protectors/bungs
 
You know what I mean, the jobbies than go in the spindle to provide some protection in case of a spill.

I know there are a couple of different makes out there...anyone used the JHP or tecmoto ones?

Any make better than another. Any a waste of time?

I believe someone makes a small diameter version, so the socket can go over them...any ideas who?

Hi Harv,

I've got the R&G ones intended for Ohlins forks. I use a thin peice of plastic stock to shim the fit my Showas, and wham them on with a rubber mallet.

It's a good idea to drill a hole through them, so that you can use a bar to get them out without mangling them. The kit also includes one for the r/h side rear spindle. About £27 ex-VAT if I remember correctly.

Not been tested (yet), but R&G bungs really saved my old TL from some major destruction, and they are very friendly and helpful to deal with.

Harv have the JHP ones. can recomend that they work:( You don't even have to remove them to takeoff the front wheel. They are designed so that the socket passes straight over them:smug:

Was thinking of the R&G ones myself, but wondered about the fitment. Spinoli, can you remove the wheels without removing the bungs?

Just bought a set of R&G, fit a treat (Ohlins). There is German company www.b-g-racing.de something, German. They do a set of four for 70 Euros. They have 2 that also fit the back wheel too.

Bought a set off a guy on ebayfor £15. They are the bolt and rod assembly described by Yeti and took minutes few to fit. I have not tried them yet, mind you the forks/brakes were one of the few things I did not damage when I dropped the bike at Silverstone last year.

Re the R&G bungs - not sure if you can remove the wheel with them in place - I've never tried. However, I think the answer will be no.

I'll have a look tonight and report back.

Spinoli...are the rear bungs big enough, in the R & G, kit to stick out further than the wheel and tyre??? I would have thought they would have to be pretty big to do that?

Harv,

I'm not sure I should be discussing my rear bung on a public forum - I hardly know you!

However, I am of the opinion that it is plenty large and substantial enough to prevent damage to my rim (it just gets worse, doesn't it).

Whatever you do, don't make an irate call to R&G complaining that they haven't included a bung for the sprocket side - you'll only get a kindly person carefully explaining to you that a bung on that side would stop you using a spindle stand.

As for piccies - I won't have the time for a couple of days, but you may find some on the R&G website. They are a nicely made product, and I do recommend them.

Nah - gonna keep it as a road bike. So its back to standard. There may be a 749R in the offing too, but there's another Italian stallion that has taken my fancy of late.;)

I did think about a certain "modified" SPS that's sitting in JHP at the mo', but what I'm looking at isn't a Ducati !!!!

My ol' SPS was a beauty, the 996R was a better bike, but the SPS had a soul, an emotion, a feeling, a heart, that the 996R couldn't quite replicate - maybe its because I didn't crash the R ??? Who knows. The R was a bit more clinical than the SPS, not true blood - if you see what I mean.

I've learnt a few things from the ZX, probably more about what I don't want rather than what I do. The ZX is a missile, its bullet-proof, reliable, nimble, sure-footed, agile, good in the air.......etc, etc.... - its probably a bit boring. Its very easy to go fast, you just have to be in the right gear and easy on the throttle.

With a Ducati, you have to worry whether it will start first, before you can worry about anything else.;) (well with the proper older ones at least).

In Cartagena after day 1, three of the four Ducatis in our group had completed 2 laps between them!!! Admittedly this was a combination of mechanical, physical and weather conditions, but nonetheless problems.

There's an element of risk with a Ducati that the Japanese have removed - shame! Its part of the fun.

I know, I know - oh dear, oh dear, oh dear!!!!

Hi again Harv,

Getting back to your questions, I have measured the various bungs accurately using the plastic ruler that came with my wax crayon colouring set, and they are exactly as follows (ish):

Front right - depth 25mm - diameter 35mm
Front left - depth 30mm - diameter 20mm (skinnier)
Rear right - depth 40mm - diameter 35mm
Rear left - Doh!

As I said before, the rear one is well proud of the wheel rim and will protect the wheel.

Oh, and yes, a suitably deep socket will go over each of the bungs.

:o thats a bit hard Tim. My problem was a duff battery, Pedro had left his camera or it had got switched on by accident.

So, why are you not tracking it then? Interested in your feedback. I was thinking about racing one next year and stick the Duke the 'museum'. The alternatives I am also considering are racing a 400, maybe a ZXR, or build a small twin.

The following might be available, rearseats, Acropovic can, K&N airfilter, Sprint steering damper, Bendix Matrix pads, crash bungs, track fairings, d/bscreen, swing protectors(paddock mounts), tail tidy, etc, etc.....

I've also got a full set of perfect blue road fairings, including tank and seat and all road parts including lights, mirrors, footpegs, seatpads, indicators etc, etc....

The ZX makes a fine track/race bike, I'm only putting it back to standard and not tracking it as I'm doing the DD series.

So any track days this year are likely to be done on he Monnie. I might have to do Castle Combe on the ZX as they don't appreciate race bikes!!!
