Viewing a 996SPS, average price? Hi, Well tomorrow Im going to view a 996SPS 2001 'Y' reg full ohlins model, 1,400 miles (yes thats right!! there is a story behind the low mileage but I will save judgement until I see it in the flesh). It has all the extra parts like two sets of cans, chips, stand and cover. Private sale, supposed to immaculate with a FSH, though that is questionable since it stood for the first 3 years as an ornament, then had a belt service the beginning of last year, so assume it hasnt had a service every year of its life. So two things, price : asking £8,700 but open to offers, so I'm thinking closer to £8000, is this about right ?? Service : probably about a year since a belt change, so will it need another or just an annual freshen up, how much from someone like Forza/Baines ?? Unfortunately I decided I couldnt quite stretch to a mint 996R, so an SPS it is...:) |
Sounds good based on the mileage - I'd try for £8K pointing out the service requirements etc. If it has been an ornament for a few years why is being sold? I miss my 996SPS :(:( But I love my 999R......no more back or wrist ache :smug::smug: |
Wheres the bike, does anyone know it? |

Currently near Hartford, he bought it a year ago, before that it was in an Arabs (Lamboughini dealer owner??)conservatory!!...so the story goes. |
it wont take much to see if it is on a genuine 1400 mile's if it is id say go for it if you can get a few pounds off, if it looks like the Speedo has been changed or nuts and bolts are rusty, walk away. Never trust anyone who lies about a bike's history, O and good luck ;) [Edited on 11-3-2005 by keefer] |
I've just sold mine for the full asking price, but have been monitoring SPS prices, both privately and in dealers. Year 2000 models with Ohlins forks range from £7500 privately over the winter, upto £9500 in a dealer, although between £8000 & £8700 seems to be the going rate. If its as good as claimed its worth something in that range and but better at closer to £8000 bearing in mind it would be best to give it a full service. Mine had just had the full service done 400 miles before i decided to sell it. Good luck, but always be cynical when buying, i saw some mutton dressed as lamb before i got mine. |
Well, the above mentioned bike was not for me, turned out to have no service history at all :rolleye: and the condition just didnt seem good enough, so I walked away :barfy: how anyone can pay about £17k for a bike and not bother to get it serviced is beyond me!! but... I've just put a deposit on a 996SPS 2000 'W' full ohlins :D:D, 5,400 fully documented and serviced miles, loads of history and receipts, seems a very genuine bike, been with the present owner since it was 3 months old. Complete with all the SPS extras as well as extra carbon bits and bobs :P hopefully pick her up tomorrow or sunday. Should be good to back on a duke, I defected to that other Italian marque then to the japs for the last 4 years, before that I had a 748SP then 748SPS, can't wait :bouncy::bouncy: |
good all's well that ends well |
well done that man  |
cool, not sure where ur based but look forward to seeing it. |

I live just south of Northampton. Picked it up yesterday, wow, great ride home :) that drive is amazing ! It was fitted from new with a STM slipper clutch, that feels wierd, some kickback through the lever when nearly fully out, is this normal ? but it seems to operate fine. |
Quote:
Yes ... you should get quite a spring back feeling from the lever when you change down. |
I just happen to know of an sps trackbike for sale for £6500 ono in the market place section. ;) All kitted out and ready to go. Judging by the prices mentioned above, sounds like a great deal to me:puzzled: |
Oh - an SPS - takes me back. I do miss my old SPS, it had character that the 996R just doesn't quite have (unreliability I think they call it!!!) Now where was this 1400 miler? Might be worth a punt? Hartford? Where was it advertised? Ian - you said no service history when you saw it and the condition wasn't right? It was advertised as immaculate and FSH - what's the story? Or an SPS trackbike - now that would be sweet!! Tim |
Tim, unreliability can go with the 996R also, 130 miles from home, oh what fun. |

Yeh - what's the story? How many miles have you done on her? |
First ride out, ok for half the day, then when i went to start her up again, poping and banging. ticks over ok but wont rev past 2k. cooled down then only got two miles and it started again. only done about 120 miles. [Edited on 28-3-2005 by adam] |
Sounds heat related to me - once she'd cooled down she was better? Could it be electrical breakdown of a part once it gets to a certain temperature? Coils? TPS? ECU? (I'm only guessing though). She never had a problem like that with me, maybe its a blocked fuel filter? Did you run low on fuel? I'd try and see if its a temperature related thing, then get her off to Nellys - he'll sort her out in a jiffy. Tim |
Fuel was ok, always above half when re feuling. Felix thinks it could be throttle body sensor, i will phone Nelly and get her up there. It was great to get out again though. Just lacking confidence. thanks Tim. |
I did take her to Nelly's for a bit fettling around this time last year, so he knows her. Good luck. Tim [Edited on 28-3-2005 by Rattler] |

I wondered about that, too. I mean, in general terms, what service history do we expect on a 1400 mike bike? One 500 mile oil-change and look-over (presumably that at least had been done?)? I realise oil change/service intervals are time as well as mileage-related, but surely there's distinction between missing mileage-related services and time-related ones. If a bike had been sat in a garage and hardly used for 5 years or whatever, I'd have though that a full service and fluid change would put it back in the pink. That's not like riding for 12000 milles without changing the oil. All of which is not criticise Ian_km at all; he saw the bike and we didn't. Just a general point for discussion, really. |

The 1400 miler is advertised through George Petch Honda dealer, though the bike was still with the owner near Hartford awaiting trade in. The only proof of any work was a receipt for a belt service last year, no sign of an initial service or any other, as for condition, I have to admit to being very particular, there where big chips on the rear wheel (tyre change I guess) and a few chips on the bodywork, nothing major. I see your point about mileage/time related services, it made me nervous thats all, probably fine really, I know he was looking around the £8,300 mark. Happy hunting http://www.dealer.autotrader.co.uk/_georgepetch.htm [Edited on 28-3-2005 by Ian_km] |

Thanks, with a bike like that you are going to want to get her fully serviced anyway. Were the tyres original? I assume not if there were tyre change marks, but why would anyone want to change tyres on a 1400 mile bike - unless there was some track action taking place? As for stone chips, this could be legit, depends on how many I spose!!! Tim |
Tyres were not original either, Metzeler Rennsports and they were shot, again strange since I think he said he bought it with 900 miles on, so 500 miles for a set of Rennsports ???..maybe on the track I suppose. |
