05 749R After reading the long thread on the 749R, I started wondering if ducati has done any fixes on the 05 model? I am currently looking at a '05, but hesistant to pull the trigger after seeing the thread. |
fixes to what? |
the fuel cut-off problems.... |
The one on the thread seems to be an isolated problem there seems to be plenty out there without a problem:) |
now I am very itched for one...... but owning both the s4r and this seems to be a bit much.... perhaps will sell the s4r... |
the 04 749r is meant to be a bit better speced than the 05 so i was told. |
04 749r has carbon bodywork. |
Typer, go for the 04 you will get a lot more for your money. JHP still has one. |
does JHP have a web address? thx in advance. |

I finally picked up the 05 749R - trading in a barely ridden S4R (lost 30% of my purchase price)... The bike looks really nice, except for the welding / paint work on the tank. which I will eventually do something about it.. Are all 749R bike like that?? |
Some are worse than others (its done by hand) |
The tank on the 749R is appauling, the welding is poor at best, looks like somone has levered the tank apart and welding in a section, I could understand this on the race bikes, it's function over form, but when you're road riding you want it to look good... don't you? |
Yes, I think it should look good. But then, knowing that it's done by hands, it reflects how serious they are with the R model, I guess. One dilemma, should I trade in the S4R? I ride maybe once a week. When I saw the 749R, I just have to have it..... FYI, it costs too much to buy any motorcycle or car in HK.. the S4R trade-in price is not bad on dollar terms. but crap on percentage terms given low little I have ridden it...... |

CONGRATS!!! :) I really don't like the 749R big tank, but didn't knew it had those welding issues. |
Thanks!! Looking forward to the delivery date.. which may be 2 wks. but in the mean time, I still have the s4r.. kinda hard to part even tho i only rode for less than 200k. |
Erm ... aren't all Ducati bikes built by hand? |
So Ducati are employing a paraplegic welder then? I could weld better than that with my left foot |
I probably am wrong. but thought some of the monsters at least machine built.. then I am new to the Ducati world... sorry for being ignorant.:sniff: |
The 'by hand' comment originated from an observation that some 749R tank welds were worse than others (mine is quite good!). Some are worse than others because they are welded 'by hand' - by hand infers human input and human input infers variability....some are worse than others. Sorry for being pedantic |

I take it they have never heard of a grinder :o Its not rocket science :puzzled: |
I think that Ducati believe that the rough welding would give the bike that - homologation special - look. Interestingly - a few months back Ducati ran a poll on their website to guage opinion on tank size/shape. One of the options was a tank of a similar shape to the 749R...I guess without the amateur welding though. |
I think its called "Character";) |
I understand there is a lot of carbon to plastic changes from 04 to 05. But which parts to be specific? Eventually I may want to replace them... Thanks in advance! |
On the 04 R the whole fairing is carbon , only the seat is plastic , I would imagine you would be around £2k to get an 04 fairing (maybe a bit more) to create the 05 look you would need an 05 999R upper with no slots mated to some 04 749R lowers so the logo is correct , good luck  |
Do the carbon nosecone mounts off the headlamp get replaced with plastic on the 05? They cost £400 per side, so there's £800 plus around £950 for the nosecone, let alone how much the sides cost.... |
I would imagine they are cast items as per the standard and S models £400 each for the carbon ones ? that sounds steep even for Ducati :puzzled: |
What I was told when I bought my R, thus replaced all that with the pierobon frame |
