Does oil have a \"sell by\" date

Just wondering does oil that has been stored in the garage for a year have a sell by date?

Doubt it, it's been under the ground for a couple of million/billion years in it's raw state

Steve 22-Mar-2005 14:35

couldn't exactly put that straight in the bike

Does it not absorb moisture the same way as hydrobolic fluid.

Re:under ground for millions of years:
bottled spring water - millions of years old rain soaked through volcanic rock, kept flowing in deep subterranean streams and lakes for eons....best before September 2005. What's all that about then?

HW 22-Mar-2005 14:46

I'd hope that fully synthetic oil HASN'T been under the ground at all!

<hmmm ... smug mode>

Actually, the question made me go and try to find out exactly what synthetic oil is. Difficult to get answers of course, because the recipe will be a trade secret (of many different companies). Basically, it seems it is highly refined and "constructed" so that anything in it benefits the engine and the lubricating/protecting process. Mineral oil apparently has many components that are actually HARMFUL to your engine (doesn't mean you shouldn't USE it of course)
