engine noise

Just got home by RAC recovery after 3hr wait. First good ride of the year came to a halt 30 miles from home. After a quick blast up a hill eased of, went to accelerate again no power just horrible noises from engine.
Has anyone out there had any terminal engine problems with their 749/999?.:(

weeveetwin 25-Mar-2005 22:51

Cam belt snapped?

sbwells 25-Mar-2005 22:53

I don't think anyone on this board has had a terminal failure of a 749/999.

I've heard of belt failures on the 748/9** range. How old is your bike? Any recent mods to the engine?

Can you describe the noises?

999sime 25-Mar-2005 22:55

No belts are ok. due to be changed in 2 weeks though, Sounds more like bottom end.

sbwells 25-Mar-2005 23:16

Flywheel nut come loose? That can happen from time to time. How many miles on the bike?

999sime 25-Mar-2005 23:18

The bike is 2 years old. no engine mods, the noise is a loud clanking just of tickover, which you feel right through the bike. It does still start ok though.

999sime 25-Mar-2005 23:19

8700 miles.

bolds 25-Mar-2005 23:23

I wouldnt be running it if it sounds that bad

sbwells 25-Mar-2005 23:35

It could be the flywheel. If the bikes in your possesion you could emove the left hand fairing panel and the flywheel cover but only if you know what you are looking for.

If the flywheel has come loose then you will feel vibration through the bike. It's not a good idea to start it as this can strip the splines off the flywheel end of the crankshaft.

999sime 25-Mar-2005 23:35

Loud enough to drown out the open clutch!!. Still soon find out what it is when i stick it in the back of the van and take it to the dealers.

999sime 25-Mar-2005 23:44

Thanks for that, might have a look tomorrow, keep you posted.

ericthered40 25-Mar-2005 23:49

time to open the ducati wallet me thinks :(

hope you get sorted and back out there soon :saint:

999sime 25-Mar-2005 23:56

Me thinks could cost a little bit more than £530 for the service

999sime 30-Mar-2005 20:48

Now waiting for ducati to give dealer go ahead to strip engine down.

Twinfan 30-Mar-2005 22:00

I hope it's still under warranty?

999sime 30-Mar-2005 22:03

21 days out , but hopefull!! Should know friday.

nelly 30-Mar-2005 23:54

I heard a whisper today that there has been a problem with the 749's throwing the big ends??

Don't know how true it is? I haven't heard it before. Maybe coincidence??
Best of luck with Ducati.

Latest news from dealer, End bearing and crankshaft!!!.::mad:

sbwells 05-Apr-2005 09:57

It may not have been shimmed properly. I don't think you are the first

999sime 05-Apr-2005 21:14

Thats intresting i'm told that this is not a problem on the 749, But how many 2 year old 749s out there have done 9000 miles?.
If Ducati do the honourable thing and pay up, i'm going to test ride a 2005 749s & 999 on Friday.
If they dont pay up i might have to turn Jap!!!!

moto748 05-Apr-2005 21:32

9000 miles is hardly a lot. Bottom end failure at that sort of mileage smacks of poor assembly or faulty parts to me.

If it's any consolation, Ducati UK were more than decent to me when they agreed to replace a slightly bent valve (parts and labour) on my 750SS when it was six months out of warranty!

Having a good dealer who's prepared to fight your corner helps a lot here, I think.

999sime 05-Apr-2005 21:39

I think the dealer is doing all they can to help. what i mean about the mileage is there are a lot of people out there that only do 1500 miles or so a year.

m1keyp 07-Apr-2005 18:19

749 sime you have 2u2

Road Runner 07-Apr-2005 20:58
