999S Specs - 04 versus 05

I'm in the early stages of looking at buying a new 2004 999S and notice that the spec sheet for the 2005 999S indicates that:

"The motorcycle comes with a racing kit that includes a complete Termignoni exhaust system, an electronic control unit with race mapping and a carbon fibre silencer cover."

Is this also true for the 2004 999S?

Many thanks

bolds 27-Mar-2005 17:24

No only included for 2005

Gizmo 27-Mar-2005 18:00

04 999 S v's 05, 05 has new swingarm ( approx £1100 ), new top fairing/screen (not sure on price but it should be possible to retro fit) comes with race exhaust but I think it steel version which can be bought for about £1000. Think 05 might have radial brakes as well. I've just been through this decision and went for 04 because the saving over a new 05 was so big ( £4000 ), I'd have been pushed to affiord 05 S but now have the bike and can upgrade if I have spare cash. Price I got it at would allow me to put 05 swingarm on and go part way to the fairing against a base spec 999 dealer price never mind an S.

Ducnow 27-Mar-2005 21:26

Yep, 05 S has new swingarm, radial mounted brakes, bodywork made from new and less weight material, a small increase in HP (does it??), and the racing kit which means half (i think) Termignoni exhaust system, ECU and carbon fiber silencer cover.
And, of course the new 05 front fairing and red frame.
I think the 05 is a big overall improvment over the 04.

bolds 27-Mar-2005 22:38

you can get a fairing upgrade kit for 03/04 bikes for the 05 fairings about £850 +vat as a ducati performance kit about £600 cheaper than individual items

Real McCoy 27-Mar-2005 22:54

The swing arm swop aint as cheap as you think

swing arm £1100
exhast mod to make clear £150
Labour £200 approx
cut down or replace belly pan to clear arm + repaint £200 ?
Misculanious linkages etc £200

Total £1800+

bolds 27-Mar-2005 22:59

I thought the dp swing arm kit was available now..again around £850 plus the dreaded

Real McCoy 27-Mar-2005 23:01

Its been available for over a year...you try and find one :(

bolds 27-Mar-2005 23:02

Ducati Leeds have them now.....

Err no they dont mate, iv just spent the last 3mth at ducati Leeds getting an 05 arm fit becouse theres non available

bolds 27-Mar-2005 23:09

Well maybe the kit I was shown just over a week ago in a dp box with all the bits inside was a mirage?

Real McCoy 27-Mar-2005 23:16

Are you sure that it was an 03/4 DP conversion arm and not a standard 999R 04/5 arm
Charlie jagger spent 3wks trying to get hold of one and Ducati could not say when they would come in stock, I was talking to him friday and he said then i was better off doing it the way we did rather than ordering a casoli item.

If theyve come in stock then i would have thought hed have said last friday, but i will ask him when they open again:puzzled:

bolds 27-Mar-2005 23:29

could have been...i just called in there to look at the bikes and they had a load of bits that had not been put away and the box was open with a swing arm in it
why would they tell you if yours is all finished?

Real McCoy 27-Mar-2005 23:32

Becouse hes the sort of guy to say "bloody typical look whats come in"

bolds 27-Mar-2005 23:34

fair enough:sing:

thats a lot of cash but I can't see me doing it anyway , ti pipes, lighter wheels then suspension is big job priority list

bolds 27-Mar-2005 23:50

Do you know if the std ducati performance exhaust kit will clear the 05 swing arm as i was looking at getting one or does that pipe have to be modded as well:puzzled:

Real McCoy 28-Mar-2005 00:00

I think an 05 pipe will clear an 05 arm, but an 03/4 pipe wont

Iv got 54mm termi's and the pipe needed lowering so it didnt foul on the rebound

bigtwin 28-Mar-2005 01:15

Cheers guys.

Looks like the '04 option lends itself to a progressive upgrade. The termi's would have to be first though!

Thanks again.

Gizmo 28-Mar-2005 08:52

How much difference does the new swingarm make?? Is it noticably stiffer or lighter or does it just improve shock progression and leverage?

jobr 28-Mar-2005 08:57

Bolds; you didn't see Charlie or John from parts with my Termi chip ordered and paid for six months ago and still not arrived?:P

Real McCoy is right Charlie would give the full SP.

Just checked the Ducati 04 and 05 tech specs and both quote weight as 199KG, the online MCN 999 review claims a 13kg weight saving and I guess you'd expect some saving with lighter panels and the new swingarm but Ducati don't quote any difference, weird.

I agree 05 is an improvement over 04 but is a £4K improvement??. That saving could get you a termi ti system with a good weight saving and lighter wheels which will make as much difference if not more than swingarm. You pays your money and takes your choice Plus I couldn't afford the 05 999S so I'd still be riding a Honda SP2. :)

Only rode it back from Leeds, been out on KTM all weekend, didn't want to get it covered in cack without a hugger to protect shock.

Inital impressions are good, better fueling than Sp2,but front end isn't as planted and its like steering a supertanker compared to how I had SP2 but thats down to setup, I altered ride height last night, setting sag front and rear tonight and will get the angle of dangle gauge on forks next week, might alter head angle rather than drop through yokes, not sure about overall ride height if I drop them. Its a lot quicker and lighter than SP2, much closer in feel to a Blade or R1 than the SP2 so maybe I should have gone for a 749R :)

it does what it was intended to do, I go into garage now just to work on it and admire it, never felt like that about the Honda.

You'll have to have a ride up here one night.

Hi Gizmo, are you going up for the championships again this year??

Hi Berto, yup, beginning of September I think, hope I get better weather for ride up, last year wasn't much fun. Still got the waterproofs I bought from your place on the way up :). Might have to get a Cumbria/Lancs ride out organised to your spot, sure we could find an interesting way instead of M6/M74 as long as that Jura coffee machine is still working.

You still active on Monster OC forums??

yellowisfriedegg 29-Mar-2005 12:57

For anyone thinking of swapping 04 bodywork for 05 bodywork be carefull , its not just the fairing upper that is different by having no slots , it's wider too and the screen is higher , also the lowers are slightly different , especially in the way that the spoliers are mounted and shaped.

The 05 bodywork is based on the 04 999/749R carbon bodywork and I don't think the new upper fairing will attach to the old lowers , also the mirror mounts from the headlight ass'y may be different too to match the wider higher top fairing , you mat also have to buy a new screen , all in it could be quite an expensive swap :(

bolds 29-Mar-2005 13:30

Thats why its worth going for the DP kit:)

So what does the kit include ?

not that I will be needing it as I am very happy with my R's carbon bodywork , I even like the slots in the upper fairing , you can see the bare carbon on the inner bit , it's cool

bolds 29-Mar-2005 15:21

not sure exactly but would presume all the bits you mentioned as its listed as a conversion for 03/04 to 05 spec
Perhaps I can tell you soon as am looking at getting one for my 749 if I can save up enough
