Help on importing?!?!?! Anyone got an idea on the cost to import an unregistered bike is? When I mean cost, an idea as to how much it would cost to make it road legal in the UK (I understand there is an SVA that the bike would have to go through etc...). Cheers Paul |
A bike shop just round the corner from work is converting a brand new US-spec fireblade for the UK. The customer paid the same in dollars as it costs in pounds here. Don't know whether you would have to pay VAT or import duty but the prep costs can't be that much (worst case you need a new headlight, best case a couple of reflectors). Sorry, just realised that I haven't answered your question at all - I'll get me coat... |
It'll be about the same as a car I guess? Might be worth searching the net for the car process as this will have been talked about a lot. I think you need the SVA, pay duty (10%), pay VAT (17.5%), register it with DVLA, plates made up etc. Try this link for more info from VOSA: VOSA info |

urghhh!!!! None of those men look remotely thai to me and I also need to speak to you in a professional capacity if you're can fit me into your very busy schedule... [Edited on 30-3-2005 by chicken] |
yeah, call me, i'll find a "window" in my schedule for you. |
It's my understanding that Ducati UK will assist their dealers in providing the necessary parts and conforming labels/certifying documents for importing some US models to the UK. The pipes, headlights, reflectors, speedometer and emissions certification is different. You'll probably need to replacing the left switch assembly, the headlight (for left side of the road riding) and the speedometer (to read KPH), and computer EPROM (for emissions). They will then do all the paperwork necessary to verify you have a UK specification bike. |
Had a look a importing a Triumph T160 once the cost of shipping, when you can find someone who will talk to you, made it unviable really. |

We still use MPH in the UK, it's just the rest of europe that use kph |
look into buying an exhaust for the car guy said he will ship it as a gift to avoid import duty said he'll even encose a card:sing: |
Duty 10% VAT 17.5% Registration Fee - Can't remember about £90 I think SVA £70 You may need to acquire a model report as well for the SVA, should be fairly straightforward to convert a bike (cars are a nightmare..) Info on importing here http://www.vosa.gov.uk/vosa/motorcyc...ngvehicles.htm and here http://www.dft.gov.uk/stellent/group...pdf_506867.pdf |

When you say importing you mean from outside the EU or from a EU country?? Unless there is very different from here you just need to pay VAT in the UK and the small stuff about registering the bike. No duty. And mind that you'll only pay VAT there, so you'll buy it without VAT from the other EU country. I know a place with great prices on import bikes, let me know if you're interested. (i have no interest there, but i was also seriously consifering getting an import bike) |
Where would that be Ducnow (oh, and congrats btw :P) ? |

You have u2u. And thanks btw |
Ducnow's made a good point, the SVA and duty are only required when importing from outside the EU. VAT is usually paid at source, although try to find somewhere that charges lower taxes than the UK...... |

Yes, usually VAT is payed at source but if it's about vehicles (because you need to register them, etc..) then VAT is payed in the country of destiny. And don't be fooled by dealers from other countrys when they say you have to pay VAT to them. |
Cheers for you help guys - (especially Dibble! - we'll have none of that here boy!!!!!) I wasn't looking at a Ducati specifically but something for a business idea... Cheers Paul |
