Should I bid?

I'm so tempted to bid, and it's only 30 mins away from me too....

:puzzled:

Jools 05-Apr-2005 12:00

Well, if you're really not sure the answer is probably no.

Then again, look at the URL. Could the end of it, "MakeTrack=true" be some sort of omen?

Lily 05-Apr-2005 12:04

Henners 05-Apr-2005 12:27

Love Kawasakis ...

... I find it interesting that so many DSC'ers do too ... must be some connection between Ducs and Kawas, don't know why :puzzled:

JPM 05-Apr-2005 12:31

Used to have kwak's before I saw the light... could have this as a spare when the R packs up....

Lily 05-Apr-2005 12:32

I don't really like them although I do like the 10r.

Problem is i reckon he will regret getting rid of the duc if he does :(

dave w 05-Apr-2005 12:35

Stop pondering..... Just do it.... you know you want too !

Henners 05-Apr-2005 12:36

Know what you mean Lil ..

... I went for about 4 weeks without a Duc last autumn, felt miserable :(

BDG 05-Apr-2005 12:36

Why do you want it Jon, for the track, or the road, or both, in addition to the 999R or as a repalcement?

And how much do you want to spend? at the rate the biddings going it won't be worth it.

Shop retail price for a used one is only about £6600 so privately its only worth about £6000. Lot of bike for the money but there's still 5 days left.

JPM 05-Apr-2005 12:40

Shaun,

I'm just fed up of not having a bike, OK it's ready and should be picking it up at the weekend which is great news, but I have made my mind up if it packs up again it's going, I want to ride a bike, not look at it in a workshop, and a Japanese bike will allow me to do that.

I did say I could have it as a spare just to test the water I guess, I saw this on Ebay and I know they're about for the prices you have said, so who knows in all honesty

beancounter 05-Apr-2005 12:46

The posts on this board of late, concerning safety problems and lack of reliability of the 999 and 749 models, has been absolutely appalling. Anyone having major problems with these bikes has my sincere sympathies !

Jon, go for the kwak. As you say, you want to ride, not wait !

Lily 05-Apr-2005 12:46

guess i had better find a garage to rent then :(:P

Simon Reed 05-Apr-2005 12:51

Gerrit bort jon,i've gorra an 05 R1,they're a bit differant to ducs to ride,tho,m8,i've gorra tell yer, thez 3 ladz that i ride with got 10's,& thi luvem, get ready for a rear tyre every 1000 miles miles or so,tho !,depending on how you ride ??i've just put one on @ 1400 miles.& thats with running it in !!!!

I missed out on a black one on Ebay a few weeks ago....980 miles, 1 owner, As new condition, Agreed a price over phone to end auction early, Aranged some transport to go pick it up..... Then got cold feet :( Kicking myself now  Still looking for one thats more local to me ( in black)

If you get the Kawa, would that mean you'dl have to let got of the 999R?

Sorry, i had just read your first post.

If you want a track bike, then why not?

And why not a 600cc jap bike as a track bike? Lots of fun :D
I had an R6 and then a CBR 600RR as track bikes, great fun at "affordable" prices and lots of spares out there.

Ducnow 06-Apr-2005 12:52

So JPM, are you bidding? :D

TP 06-Apr-2005 12:55

I rode an R6 on the weekend around Almeria, albeit only for a few laps. It was running road pattern shift and my desmo due bike is race pattern but I just didn't like it at all.

I can see the potential in it to go very quick but I don't think they are for me. I'd much rather have a 748 as a track bike. An RS would be the ultimate track tool I think.

Freak, it just doesn't make sense mate. Just get the 999R sorted out and it will be an absolute weapon.

antonye 06-Apr-2005 13:01

To quote Mr Murray, sometimes of this parish:

If you haven't yet seen it, then I thoroughly recommend this month's
"Bike".

Specifically, for their experiment in taking a stock R6, plus another
same, and doing some very basic re-tuning of the other one to sacrifice
a bit of top end for a bit more mid-range.

An then they did a sort of blind test with staffers and readers.

Absolutely fascinating. One of the most original feature ideas I've seen
in ages, and bears out the sort of guff that us old farts witter on
about - screaming top end horsepower, and that last fractional bhp, and
that 3mph advantage, is a waste of time (off the track).

I know it says "off the track" but how many of us would honestly find the limits anyway?

fil2 06-Apr-2005 14:53

I had a builder round my house laying a patio for me. He was in his late 30's, had never ridden a bike before and reckoned he was going to do Direct Access then get a ZX10.

I told him that he probably wouldn't have a very long life expectancy, but it didn't seem to register....

Thats a scary thought Jools...my old man shat himself going up the road on my 115hp 10 year old 888 last year....but at least hed had some experience on big bikes years ago..and it certainly isnt a c.1hp>1kg ratio firebreathing nutcases tool.

Ive lost 2 mates now who did a quick test and bought powerful bikes...not a good recipe at all..

Lily 06-Apr-2005 17:05

I keep having a similar fear. My dad has been riding bikes for 40 odd years and still rides a bike to work most days. He has been riding big old touring bikes and has finally decided that he wants something sporty (at 65 :rolleye: )

Problem is he has not ridden a sports bike for about 25 years and even then they were nothign compared to todays bikes and I am terrified as I really dont think he has any comprehension of the power and performance of even the smallest current sportsbike.

Mum actually mentioned the other day that he quite liked the look of the fireblade :(

antonye 06-Apr-2005 17:26

Just remind them that the new Gixxer Thou will do 174mph ... in fourth gear! :o

deej 07-Apr-2005 20:04

lily your dads hould be fine with all his experience, my old man(52) bought a new daytona 600 and hasnt been above 9000rpm on it yet, he says he doesnt need to its more than enough for hima nd whats he used to and hes ridden rc30/ow01's round donington when hew as cheif paddock marshall there

natty its a sad loss of life and ithink there shoudl be some limit to what you can ride after passing your test these days, 3 weeks ago i did a cbt for a 20 year old who's dad was paying for his test for his 21st birthday and then giving him his old 1500 goldwing for his first bike. i think a 600cc limit should be enforced that will be more than enough for a newbie to ahndle.

p.s. see you at louigimoto on saturday, im taking your advice and going to rich's to get the belts done

Road Runner 07-Apr-2005 20:51

I agree deej 600 should be the limit for at least a year.

As for Kawasakis I had a ZX7R for three years before my 996.

lovely bike but .......

yep first bike I owned after passing my test.
amazed im still alive.

if I had the dosh I would get a ZX10 but only as an extra not a replacement

Mr C 07-Apr-2005 21:56

Them there New Fireblades keep winking at me from shop windows :rolleye:

Rattler 07-Apr-2005 22:07

JPM - if you fancy a thrash on a ZX as I've said before, you're welcome to take mine out.

She's nearly back to standard now though, so you'll have to be gentle!!!

I'm gonna use the ZX as a road bike for me and Mrs Rattler to pootle about on - its too slow for the track ;)

I'm saving the track work for the fire-breathing monster!!!!

At the risk of being overly controversial, I have a theory about Dukes and trackdays.

As you know I drifted away from Ducatis a couple of years back to a race R6 and really regretted it.

The R6 probably was a bit tired and may have not been the best example of oriental machinery, but I very much liked the fact that a Ducati can flatter track riding, whereas you had to absolutely scream the R6 to get the best out of it.

The same is true of the ZX10R, (albeit to a lesser degree, as there is relatively a lot more torque in the ZX than there was in the R6), but nothing really compares to the torque and laziness that a Ducati can offer you.

If you're in the wrong gear exiting a bend, so what, the Ducati will still pull you out of there sharpish, get it wrong on the ZX and you've got to wait a month before you can get on it fully or it'll spit you off in a trice!!!

It really is a beast and took me a long time in Spain to get anywhere near a decent pace on. (that and it pi55ed down!!!!)

I'd stick with the Duke for trackdays, the way it delivers power can get you up to speed quickly and is, IMHO, easier to ride quickly on a track for the likes of us.

Would the ZX go quicker than the 999R on a track? Probably, but you'd need a lot of track time to get used to it and then would have to try a lot harder to stay focussed. Any lapse in concentration could lead to a big mess!!!

Maybe that's why Weeksy is taking a look back over the Ducati fence? ;)

What's really frightening is how much bike you can buy nowadays for so little money. The ZX is an advanced bike that has far more power than I could ever use or control. The new GSXR1000 has even more power - beware!!!

In addition, one of the main reasons that I'm looking forward to the DD series this year is that I will be a better rider at the end of the season.

The Monnie has sooo little power that unless you maintain max entry and exit corner speed, you're not gonna get anywhere. It has approx 100bhp LESS than the ZX - amazing!!!

So maybe you should be looking at a much smaller trackbike that'll improve your overall riding skills? ZXR400 or the like??? That way you can keep the 999R for DSC trackdays and then stuff the Kwaka around Oulton to your heart's content?

Who knows? I'll stop now!
