please, please, take care out there on the roads

Just had a call telling me the following:

Yesterday afternoon, my girlfriend was taken out by an hgv turning left across her on the Finchley Road (?) in London.
The police have taken the cctv footage.
She was heli-lifted from the scene to The Royal London.
She underwent 7 hours of surgery on her smashed elbow and arm, she also underwent several hours of surgery on her leg which is a muscular / flesh wound.
She did not suffer any head injuries.
She cracked her pelvis, coccyx, ribs and some others besides which are secondary concerns to the surgeons at this stage.
She regained consciousness this morning.
I am to ring later this evening as she's seeing family this morning although she can't talk yet.
Her days as a triathelete are over.
But she's alive.
So, please, please take care out there, it's not your riding that worries me, it's other road users that bother me.

Tim

Bloody hell! I hope she recovers ok - sorry to hear about it.

All the best.

ali 28-Apr-2005 10:51

**** Tim! Can't believe it. Will be keeping all fingers crossed that she makes a complete recovery. Let me know if there's anything I can do to keep the photography going while you tend to the missus.

Riding anywhere near a city seems to have become a survival sport. :(

Cheers,

Ali

As everyone else says, hope she makes a full and quick recovery.
Just goes to show, within 50 yards your life is turned upside down. Make sure your house(s) are in order to help others tend to your needs whilst you are away recuperating.

Terrible news. Best wishes to her.

aws 29-Apr-2005 21:12

I have not been allowed / invited to see her yet. Just family.
That's OK as I am told she is she's frightened and in great pain.
Today was one leg's surgery.
The damage is so great that they are not doing a skin graft, they used a synthetic (?) "skin" to make good some of the damage.
I think she has a day off on Saturday and on Sunday that is still more surgery to do.
Depressing news and you just have to hope that all this leads to a sucessful outcome - in whatever way possible.
I maybe hope to see her on Tuesday now.

The morals here:
wear protection on every journey, regardless of its length
buy the best gear you can afford
ride-safe
assume everyone else is blind to you on your 2 wheels.

Mr_S 29-Apr-2005 21:19

She's in the best place she can be right now, though what you're going through not being able to see her or speak to her is unimaginable.

Keep your spirits up, you need to be strong for her when you do get to see her.

Stay strong

Jason
