electricsheep 08-May-2005 21:52

swannymere 08-May-2005 21:56

Festa748 08-May-2005 22:45

sand and polish

or sticker

Carbon749 08-May-2005 22:49

Take it to a metal polisher and ask him to buff it out and ask him to "mop" the can but not polish it. Will leave it in a nice satin finish as per race bikes.

Ah ha ... good idea. I was wondering whether to polish that out or not. If they

Can't find something that says "for racing use only" then it might confuse enough to let it go. Maybe.

Surely isn't illegal to polish those "unsightly marks" out on there is it?

Carbon749 08-May-2005 23:34

From my humble knowledge of the law the police can use their proffesional training to assess if an exhaust is excessively noisy or not ..... if they deem it to be noisy they can then check it with a DB meter. This is regardless of markings or the lack of markings.

I guess if you were not reving the bike whilst sat next to a cop car and were trying to "run quiet" then the lack of markings on the can may help if pulled by the fuz :D

The big benefit comes at MOT time. If the can has no markings at all then it's at the discretion of the tester if it will pass or not ..... most will smile and pass a race can.

:saint:I want to remove it for all the above reasons.I would prefer not to grind it out,is there anything i can fill it with, and then polish?:saint:

Carbon749 08-May-2005 23:47

No need to grind it out, a very light "mop" will sort it.

I guess if you try to fill it and sand it back you will still see the words as the filler will always be a slightly different colour and show against the colour of the can.

Call me Naive but what do u mean by a light Mop?

Please no Vileda Jokes

Carbon749 09-May-2005 00:20

Not an expert, but, when you have anything polished the first operation is to Mop the item. This is a course fabric (possibly calico) wheel with a course soap that will give a satin finish whilst buffing out deep scratches (and letters). At this point it will look really nice and race.

Normally the next stage would be to use a finer wheel and soap to polish to a mirror finish.

All that said, I'm assuming that the standard can is stainless steel .... if it's mild steel with a protective coating then any type of buffing etc will remove the coating and the can will go rusty :o

cant you change "not" and make it "hot" ?:D:roll::D:cool:

swannymere 11-May-2005 12:31

:saint:I have had an idea about how to cover the 'FOR RACING USE ONLY' stamp on my termi can (749).Does anyone know if it is possible to cover it with a line of weld and then repeat the process in the same location on the opposite side,so that it looks structural?I'm not sure if it would damage the can,but i'm sure you'll let me know:saint:

Gizmo 11-May-2005 12:53

Can you polish it out of a titanium end can?? i'd think the ti is a little bit thinner than steel and am concerned it would leave a weak point on the can.

Rattler 11-May-2005 13:21

Simply stamp the word "NOT" in front !!! ;)

Sorted

swannymere 11-May-2005 13:31

yorkshire pud 28-May-2005 10:34

swannymere 28-May-2005 10:56

:puzzled:Thanks,i've bought one of those 'dremel'? multitool things which has polishing attachments, what sort of compound do i need? What is 'lea'?Any help appreciated.:puzzled:

Screwy 28-May-2005 11:32

You could try fine valve grinding paste if your using a dremel , Its similar to the paste they use on scurfing mops at most metal polishing shops .

The .********..Police are actually looking for the BS marks to prove it is a road legal can, so a legal can without the correct stamps, that doesn't sound too loud (as they are also cute to the removing of baffles) would still get the 30 quid fixed (no point) penalty.

Believe me I had a 20 minute chat with two of Buckinghamshires finest money-grabbers whilst they scoured my 45mm slip-on carbon termi's for a 'NOT FOR ROAD USE' sticker, but could not find one - but as they did not have the correct BS stickers/marks they still stuck me with a fine.

Been a bit of a bad month as they did me 2 weeks ago for a small number plate, and when I talked to them on that occasion they said they would have done me for the pipes if the plate was ok...

What an inspiration for us all...

At the time I wished I could:flame:the:pig: ..................... :flame::pig:
