Been on the dyno

Don't want this to turn into a max power type hype thread but just had the 998r on the dyno.

127 at the back wheel.

Hopefully some more to come (back) when a poorly chosen mod by the previous owner gets junked.

Wasn't sad enough to video it, maybe next time.:o

Ray

nathanhu 11-May-2005 13:54

go on then what was the mod??????

Anything to do with airfilters?

Ray 11-May-2005 14:05

Felix,

You guessed it. I don't want to upset any particular fan clubs but lets just say that the filters are going back into the air tubes. (pipercross)

Bizzarrely the thing was running very lean up to half revs then a little lean from there on up. You would think that any problem with a lack of airflow would cause it to run rich?

Maybe Junking the mesh on the air intakes has leaned things off but I would have thought that removing an obvious restriction in the intake was a good thing IF you can keep the fueling right.

I don't think there is a lot to be done to adjust the fueling with the OEM open pipe ECU.
Maybe a power commander to richen things up is needed?

Looks likes its Bye bye to 50 plus MPG in cruise mode??

Ray

Felix 11-May-2005 14:21

Ahh, what you need is a map switch on the handlebars, so you can select your 50 MPG cruise mode or full power, low MPG mode. Suits you, sir. ;)

Seriously, though, have a read here

Ray 11-May-2005 16:54

Felix,

Interesting, I had been aware that FIM had been working on this. To start with I am going to try and make the best of what I have as it were.

Its maybe an option to follow up if I can't get the fueling somewhere near. The facility to fuel map front and rear cylinders independently might be vital 'cos my bike is lot leaner of the front cylinder at the moment.

Who is my "local" FIM dealer who would be able to map this up to suit? presumably they need a dyno? or at least the use of one.

maybe an F02 is gonna be a cheaper option??:o:lol:

Ray

Felix 11-May-2005 17:07

Yes, yes, I know I still owe you an answer on the F02 question! Cheeky sod!

Have you spoken to John Hackett? I am sure he'd be able to sort it out. Pro-Twins I believe are the official importer, but Neil Spalding is pretty handy with FIM stuff, or so I am told. Much more locally, I am sure Nelly has nowt to do and would be happy to try his dab hand at something new.;) Or, how about Paul Kalatowich (sp?) of Ducati Technical Services in Wakefield. I know he's got a dyno.

TP 11-May-2005 17:12

I can vouch for Neil Spalding - I have FIM chips in my 996 and my monster both done by him.

Ray 11-May-2005 17:18

Felix,

Thanks,

I'll let you know how I get on in a week or two after another dyno run.

Ray.

Felix 11-May-2005 17:21

Whose dyno are you using?

RickyX 11-May-2005 17:36

My 916SPS is going to Sigma for FIM Chip setup...currently it's got a JHP chip and there's definitely something queer going on (it misfires and stinks of fuel).

BDG 11-May-2005 18:05

Strangely enough my 996R goes on the dyno tomorrow.

Interesting to see what that does in comparison to yours and my previous SPS. Although of course the dyno readings from different dynos always vary a bit, but it will be the same dyno as the SPS went on.

beancounter 11-May-2005 18:08

What did the SPS make ?

From memory as the dyno sheets are at home

120 bhp and 71 ft lbs.

in completely standard condition (by that i mean not the road legal pipes):D other than an ITG air filter.

I've heard of SPS's producing more than that but don't know if they were stock, and depends on different dynos a little as well. As you'll know the factory qoute 123bhp for them.

Can I say

told you so.....

;)

BTW, it's really hot in Ibiza today....

Ray 12-May-2005 00:43

Felix,

Just getting power and air fuel ratio runs at Jordan bikes. Not somewhere I would use for a serious mapping session, but fine for now.

Ray.

nelly 12-May-2005 00:53

Ray, the latest Power Commander PCIII's have the facility to map individual cylinders. It just needs activating in the software ;)
Maps aren't generally available without dyno runs, but a PC and dyno time should work out cheaper than a FIM unit.

Ray 12-May-2005 10:58

Nelly,

Thanks, I had heard of good results with a power commander but the option to map individual cylinders wasn't mentioned.

Ray

BDG 12-May-2005 13:22

Just come back from dyno run on the 996R

it made 132.5bhp and 72.2 ft lbs torque compare to
my old SPS 120 bhp and 71.1 ft lbs of torque on the same dyno. Having said that the dyno curves on both bikes were pretty similar except that the SPS has a distinct advantage between 6500 & 7500 rpm and the R only really shoots ahead from 8750 rpm in both both powee and torque.

However these figures are qouted on the STD scale which is about 2% up on the EC measurement. The dyno operator always uses the higher reading because it 'pleases' people more.

More realistically different dyno produce different readings so it doesn't really compare with Rays results as i'm sure the 998R engine should produce a little bit more power, unless of course the air filter situation that Ray refers to is having a detrimental effect.

nelly 12-May-2005 16:08

Ray, the map option in the PC doesn't seem to be known about that much. I certainly didn't know it was there until I went on the Dynojet training they offered a few weeks ago.
There's a few hidden tweaks in there to be had, but the installer just needs to know about them ;)
I've had a look in my map library and there are a few maps in there with individual cylinder maps, but none specifically for the R. 998S is covered with a few though.
The latest USB commanders are really clever pieces of kit. The mapping points have been doubled as well as having the tweaks built in. There's also an ignition module coming out soon that allows rev limit tweaking, as well as curve.

Ray 01-Jun-2005 13:31

Been back on the dyno. 131 at the wheel this time (in slightly worse atmospheric conditions) and much better fueling. nearer to the ideal across the rev range.

The throttle response is a lot sharper.

The undertank between the air intake intakes filter has been removed and in tube pipercross filters fitted.

More to come with the cams dialled in and the squish set but thats gonna cost more than the price of the filters! Maybe this autumn

Sounds interesting, I`m thinking of having a Power Commander fitted to the 998s and a proper set up done.

Henners 01-Jun-2005 20:12

Interesting figures. My 996R did 119.7bhp @ 10,000rpm and 67.7ftlbs @ 8000rpm with 900 miles. That's with completely standard pipes and filters. Very smooth curves.

The 998S FE did 130bhp and 75ftlbs with 50mm termis and JHP filter.

andyb 01-Jun-2005 20:45

Ray, i think you have around 15bhp missing that a pc111 will find with the right set up.

rcgbob44 01-Jun-2005 21:38

Thats a lovely looking 996R Henners, I think you should get an Aprilia RSV R to add to your collection:)

Henners 01-Jun-2005 22:09

Sorry Rob, I'm a leader not a follower
