Monster v SS - which is best for DD ???

It would be nice to see who had what in the results.
But even better would be a few opinions :saint:

dickieducati 11-May-2005 16:30

depends what cc it is.........................lights bliue touch paper and stands well back!

AK 11-May-2005 16:44

6 speed late 620ss Phil - with the right rider on!

C

ps: Dickie:P

Jools 11-May-2005 16:47

Neil Spalding reckons 620 Monster, basically because the chassis is more easily adjustable.

If I ever get to do DD (persuading Mrs Jools is harder than finding the money - even though I'm still skint) I would go that route simply because the Monster is basically a naked ST chassis and that's what I'm used to

Tonio600 11-May-2005 16:49

Charlotte, the 620 SS doesn't exist, it's called just Sport :D:D:D
Maybe Ducati thought it was not "Super" enough to be called SS :(

AK 11-May-2005 16:51

ok, am dummy - I meant S:rolleye:

Mr Spalding has set up TP's and MW's monsters with ST4S geometry - what does that say..........

best chassis and geometry in the range being mumbled by the ST massive...

when you say set up what are we talking about ? just ride height? steering head angle cant be changed and i guess neither can swingarm pivot point?

not being funny here. genuine question.

Err .. I don't know! Would have to have a chat to Neil about it. Hey, I just fork out the cash and ride the thing!

It should be said though that while other people are having bike issues, ground clearance, bike not steering the way they like etc - Mine does everything I want it to and laughs at me for not being faster. Not bad for a 620 Monster.

It's a shame really, because I'd have some excuses to use for not being quicker and maybe a few things to look at to find some speed. When really all I have to look at is me and maybe some gearing changes!

:(

uncledunnie 11-May-2005 17:12

Dickie,

next time you get the chance stand your bike next to Tony's or Michaels. It is sitting much higher than ours. Tops of forks are flush with the top yoke and the rear is much higher. Nothing to do with suspension internals or Ohlins this and that, just the geometry of the bike created by adjusting front and rear ride height which emulates that of the ST4S.

Riding higher they plop into the corners easier but still maintain the right chassis attitude (front end bias).

Yep - they have been lifted. I couldn't give you exact measurements because I don't really know. Yes we both have ohlins rear's and a longer spring with heavier fork oil as well but probably the biggest impact on steering would be the raising of the bike.

Another change he made which has had a HUGE impact (for me anyway) is the Performance Friction pads. Lots of feel from the front.

If you either of you want to ride it you're more than welcome to. I'll be at Brands on the 25th of this month for one of the FE evenings or Castle Combe next Wednesday.

Just let me know.

dickieducati 11-May-2005 17:17

mines level at the front too (up 10 mm ish) and up about 25mm at the rear but will be interesting to compare. mines seems to handle ok. like i could tell the difference anyway!

dickieducati 11-May-2005 17:21

i was having huge clearance problems at brands before mine was changed, both pipes touching down and bellypan left right and at rear. all seemed fine at cadwell but really need to do brands indy again to know for sure.

How do you find the pads ?

When you take your bike to Sigma Performance it's not because you're trying to do things on the cheap ;)

Obviously a new ohlins shock was the single biggest expense but Neil's labour/specialist knowledge isn't cheap either.

 :( (where's the crying smilie?)

The pads are f*%&ing awesome!!!!! When I rode the bike before giving it to Neil it felt sloppy, remote and the brakes were what I would have expected of a 620 monster aimed at girls and first time bike riders. Now they feel better than my 996 brakes and the only change was the pads!

domski 11-May-2005 17:35

Monster frames of any era are the ones to go for as they have proper rear suspension layout as per the 888 racers, whereas the sluttysports have the shock laying down ;)

Sorry about that, I wanted to edit my post to change "there is nothing" to "there isn't anything" which is better English I think...

Well it made me laugh and I'm English, so I wouldn't worry about it :D

You also need to change "offensed" to "offended" ;)

Roughly: "Want to sponsor a French motorbike rider against the English?"

Rosbeefs being slang for "English People", as in Roast Beefs because that's all we eat, apparently ;)

It's very good :D

I think it is.
Fact is Monty gave us stickers with the same logo... so I thougth I could use it on my website.
It's the one Desmondo did, and yes it's a very nice logo.

But anyway, back to the thread ;)

I know, I'm one of the king hijackers around here ....

Phil, are you thinking of joining in the fun?

I'm not sure which is the better bike for DD. A 620 Sport took the win in both races followed by a couple of 620 Monsters. Ian Leah was up there as well on his 620 Sport.

Having said that, an older monster still running as a 583 took a 6th and a 5th.

Hope that helps ...

domski 11-May-2005 19:07

If money isn't such an issue, then best bet is probably a 620, just incase the rules allow 680cc limit across the board in 2006.

Just saves some hassle :saint:

Monty 11-May-2005 20:34

"A 620 Sport took the win in both races "-wrong-if you looked closely at Geofs bike you would have noticed it is a monster chassis with sport tank-sneaky like.

John

TP 11-May-2005 22:02

Well, I may recall this incorrectly but I spoke to Geoff on the Sat night at Cadwell and I thought he told me it was a sport - with an older style tank on it.

Possibly off the old shape 900SS. It's very well done though, if it's a monster or a Sport. Looks great.

Did anyone else speak to him??

antonye 11-May-2005 22:36

Yeah myself and CK spoke to Geoff as he was just across the tarmac from them in the paddock. I'm sure he told me it was a 620 SS but with the older 600 SS tank on it as I spotted that.

AK 11-May-2005 22:43

I think you are right Antony - but I stand to be corrected:puzzled:

C:)

phil_h 11-May-2005 22:55

Yep, Geoff's is a sport for sure.
I thought it would be a good question to ask, but didnt expect quite so much activity in the space of one afternoon :saint:
I've always wondered what a decent shock would do for the ss chassis, but also always thought that the monster(851) chassis would always be better.
These results show (I think) that good setup makes the best of ANY chassis.

The other interesting thing I think I've seen (thanks to mutters xlnt pix) is that the front runners all have twin discs ...

Oh and yes TP, I have always been interested in racing in DD !
It's just that I am running 2 other race bikes, and because they are old clunkers, take a lot more spannering than these 'swap the bodywork and race them' modern things :P

:eureka: Anyone want to offer me a px on my FE :eureka:

phil_h 11-May-2005 22:58

:eureka: Hey Dom - can you do a monster v sport results table :saint:

domski 11-May-2005 23:40

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

I have 3 weeks to spare ;)

Monty 12-May-2005 10:23

Ok, Ok I stand corrected-didn't look too closely at Geofs bike but I remembered the tank being wrong for the frame and assumed it was a monster chassis-I'll go back into my box now.
Still think the monster chassis is the best to use though.

John
