sete discussion....... **result spoiler**

so with sete getting his arse handed to him on a plate again, what; if anything; can he do to beat rossi?

i believe rossi is the best rider out there, but surely sete has to try something different to beat him. he is constantly being stalked by rossi and then overtaken seemingly at will. should he try and really push for an early advantage in an attempt to force rossi into a mistake, as has happened in the past?
'let' rossi through and turn the tables? or is rossi simply too good and all sete can hope for is a DNF from rossi where sete can close the gap?

Rattler 16-May-2005 13:59

I think the fact that they both put in their fastest lap on the final lap shows that whatever Sete can throw at Rossi, it just isn't good enough.

However, as was said in the commentary, Sete is the only one good enough to push Rossi that hard.

Sete is simply the best of the rest and Rossi is Tina Turner!!!! ;)

Gizmo 16-May-2005 14:06

Rossi - Lap 28 -1.33.678 fastest lap of race, WTF can you do when you put pressure on from behind and he responds with a lap like that. Rossi can up it no matter whether he's in front or behind, he just seems capable of lifting it that little bit more, he's on the edge as you can see from the odd mistake but unless he bins it he's going to win if he's one on one with anyone

Sete has to go from the gun and try and bang a big lead in and hope Rossi gets stuck in traffic, his start wasn't good yesterday but Sete was in wrong place to take any advantage.

Its impressive TV at the mo, I don't want anything to change.

antonye 16-May-2005 14:07

Rossi rides better under pressure, and Sete knows this too. I really don't think there's anything that anyone can do at the moment to beat him, maybe in the odd race just not over the whole championship.

Something always makes me think that Rossi is toying with people, exactly as you say by stalking them and going past at will. We'll never know just how much he's got in reserve (like negating a 10-second penalty as he did at Philip Island in 2003 iirc?) and that's why he's the best rider out there.

Does it make the racing any less exciting? No. We know he's on a lesser machine - you're not telling me that the Yamahá is better on paper than the Hondá! - and it makes the racing that much better and maybe more even. Having Rossi on a Hondá this (and last) year would have been like F1 with the Schumaker/Ferrari partnership over the last few years and turned it into a procession.

All credit to Sete for being up there with him, but he'll only win on Rossi's mistakes and that just ain't gonna happen.

domski 16-May-2005 14:16

I don't like Sete... He's too righteous and still banging on about Dajiro, and he never gets ****ed off, he's way too false and a bit wooden.

He's a good rider, but if Rossi wasn't out there, I don't think Sete would be as fast as he is. Without Rossi, Sete would be battling with Biaggi, Barros, Hayden, Capirossi etc.

Rossi is on another level entirely, and I LOVE IT when he beats Sete :P

(Good to see Colin up there too)

The only one that can beat Rossi is Rossi (if he burns out ) & even that wont happen , once he gets bored he's gone

psychlist 16-May-2005 14:55

Hmmm!

How long has Sete been a DSC member ;)

Well he's not gonna beat the rest to win the WORLD champs so why not join the best and do DesmoDue :P

JPM 16-May-2005 15:01

For me Rossi is the complete racer, he has everything, speed, talent, mental attitude, that "jack russell" aggression, and the edge on everyone else out there, call that what you will.

Sete is a good, great rider but just doesn't have all of those attributes or not as well honed as Rossi, if Rossi wasn't there Sete should be running away with it for sure, but as has been said maybe he would be swallowed up then by the likes of Biaggi, Baros, Capirossi, Hayden, Melandri etc?

Rossi is just at another level, a bit like Schumacher the difference being MotoGP is still thoroughly entertaining to watch unlike F1. Maybe Rossi will retire in a few years? maybe he'll jump to F1?

It would be interesting to see Rossi on an even lesser bike, the kwakker? the Ducati? and also see what he would be like without Jeremy Burgess just to see how much they add to his package.

skidlids 16-May-2005 16:02

Great race and to me it looked like the Honda no longer had the advantage coming out of the slower corners like it did last year, at on time the Honda would have closed the gap as soon as they exited the last turn onto the start finish straight and then use the slipstream to pass at the end of the straight. Just didn't see this happening yesterday, so if Yamaha have given Rossi that little bit more I can't see there is anything Sete can do about Rossi's wining.

Felix 16-May-2005 16:20

I'd agree, Kev, I don't think all this "Rossi is faster on lesser machinery" is quite what it was. The Honda has it's own issues now and there isn't much in it anymore, IMHO. Still, Rossi is clearly the best rider, mainly as far as his head is concerned.

pedro 16-May-2005 16:29

killer blow was "that corner" in race 1, it gave sete a taste of whats ahead for the season. vr is just the best out their, hope we see him on a red bike?:puzzled:

Monty 16-May-2005 16:36

I think the comment from Kevin Schwantz on the film 'Faster' said it all
" He's got his name, address, phone number, cellphone, social security number the lot" basically Rossi is on another level from all the others currently. Overall Sete is the best of the rest, others shine at different tracks, but Rossi is ALWAYS top dog.

Rally 16-May-2005 17:13

I liked the way Edwards just shakes his head when the two of them mug him at once.

domski 16-May-2005 17:28

The Honda has less advantage (if any) now, because Rossi & Burgess aren't there developing it.

All the Honda riders do now is complain that someone else has the factory bits, and my bike is crap.

I haven't heard Edwards moan that much this year ;)

Just finished reading the Mick Doohan book and one of the things that struck me was how critical Doohan was of Honda, how left to their own devices (like when he was injured or over the winter) Honda would go off in the wrong direction, and how it took Doohan and Burgess to keep them pointing in the right direction...

Who's driving Honda development forward now?

ericthered40 16-May-2005 17:34

Rossi is the best rider and at the weekend he just had to show sete how good he was. I think he was just F***ing with his head and a fine job he made of it aswell.

antonye 16-May-2005 18:17

I think Monty and Urban also have a very good - was it the team of Burgess and rider (be it Doohan or Rossi) which helps drive Honda's dominance of the series more than Honda themselves?

We've seen it with the RCV and maybe they haven't learnt that lesson yet.

TP 16-May-2005 18:22

Doohan, Rossi or Gardner! Gardner was Jeremy's first world title. I think there is a lot to be said for how many world titles he has been behind. Obviously he has also had the best rider (although with Gardner that could be debatable) so I think we'll never know the real story of how much influence either has been.

We've seen both Doohan and Rossi ride around deficiencies in the bike. And both of them pull a little extra out of the bag at a certain time. Rossi has certainly picked up a bit of Mick's mental domination of his rivals but he doesn't do it as well as Mick did (IMO)

domski 16-May-2005 18:37

Probably coz Rossi has a personality, and Doohan is just an Australian

GsxrAge 16-May-2005 19:39

I was waiting for Sete to start moaning about his tyres

Perhaps he would be faster if he cut his mullet off, a) he might see where Rossi went. b) his bike would be carrying less wheight hense he would be quicker.

Is he sponsored by Vidal sassoon or Wella ????????????

yeah, the difference being...................i'm joking!

Ozz 17-May-2005 15:28

Sete did moan about something on his bike didn't he. I seem to remember him saying something. He cannot go a race without doing it and also flicking his hair cos hes worth it!

I think these days Rossi could win on a Puch Maxi. Next behind him is really Melandri - he has come a long way this year and was ill this weekend but still managed 5th (?). Great to see Edwards up there and shame Troy can't do the same.

Not according to Honda themselves, they thought it was the bike making Rossi look good hence his defection to Yamaha and his disire to beat anybody and everybody on a Honda.

dickieducati 17-May-2005 16:03

:lol::lol::lol:

very good.

feel free to join me on the grid any time you like! ;)

I bet my 50bhp Ducati can beat your 120bhp? Gixer :P

Come and play in DD... Where real men race

domski 17-May-2005 17:25

You couldn't do 56's around Brands, so I'll just take the £100 :P

You have yourself a deal...

...get your cash out then!! :burn:

Beers on me lads ;)

domski 17-May-2005 17:42

Dude, we'll have to go by lap times I think as there is no class that we can both enter...

PRO-BIKE OPEN (specification: 475-750 2 stroke and 701-1300cc 4 stroke machines)

...at least you won't have the misery of finishing behind a Ducati Monster on track.

If it's wet, then it won't work, unless you go out on road tyres :P

Steve M 17-May-2005 17:49

Going by the lap times that Domski & co were setting at Cadwell where the days fastest laps were only 3 secs quicker than the quick DD boys and for most classes the DD times would have been competitive, can I have a tenner on Domski? ;)

domski 17-May-2005 17:50

Your monnie is safe :D
