Understeer Problem

Went out with a couple of fast lads at the weekend which allowed me to push the bike harder than I have up to now. I noticed and so did the rider following that my 999 was understeering into corners. I think more noticable on left handers although that probably isn't too relevant.

At one point on a left hander at the apex of the corner I'm almost out to the white line with the bike almost on it's side to stop drifting out further! Bit scary and not what I'm used to.

Part of me is thinking perhaps it is me as I'm aware the bike handles less well than the Mille. But I also think it is the bike.

What do I need to do to get her to turn in better and give me better feel from the front tyre?

ttstu, what bike do you ride?

Sorry 999 BP '03.

Jack up the back by about 10mm at a time testing after each change-that should do the trick. It worked on my 996 and also my ST4S-now that used to really understeer, especially on the gas-it doesn't now.

have you done any suspension adjustments ??
and how heavy are you???

ttstu 31-May-2005 22:40

14.5 stone. I've tweaked some of the settings to firm them up. The two screws on top of the forks and the two at the bottom.

I think the back end is too low and not enough weight over the front. Seems ok at lower speeds but the faster you go the more the front end wants to drift wide.

Lifting the rear always seems to help both mine are raised, the UJM is in the sky!!!

What tyres/pressures you running? Try taking out 1-2psi out the front, I do this on trackdays to balance front/rear grip.

Have you got a 190 on the rear or a 180 ?

Go for the 180 as they sorted out the understeer on the 9**

ttstu 01-Jun-2005 22:17

Got 180. Think I need to drop the forks thru' the yokes. Or perhaps raise the rear? Perhaps I need to take her into a specialist.:o

try the front first mate

I know this might sound obvious but have you checked your tyre pressures ?????

Raise the rear a bit and then get the seat converted so you sit a bit higher and can put more weight over the front wheel.
Not that i have a 999 but I know which route I'm going when I get one, also maybe take some front preload (ride height) off if Chippys 749 is anything to go by.

Did that on the 916 and ST2, the ST seems to handle pretty well now and turns quite quickly (for a Dook) :D When I bought it the rear was at it's lowest setting having been owned by a harley rider who was obviously setting it up to handle like the shite he was used to. I thought the frame was bent until I checked out the suspension settings. Made a massive difference as did having some preload on the rear spring. Wouldn't mess with raising the forks through the yokes IMHO, try the rear first.
