Revving it?

Had my 916BP a week odd, just had the timing belts done, the process looks like a game by MB I played when I was a kid, turning the 'dials' etc.

As I am new, just wanted to find out the 'safe' performance range of the engine; I have never thrapped the nuts off any of my bikes but was interested to hear where other owners rev round to, I am finding plenty of torque and 'go' around 6 to 7K. Does this engine like my Mille, like to wound up?

Geo-taff 19-Jul-2003 19:16

wind it up M8, just don't hit the limiter too often, and it should all be alright. But for god's sake don't stop at 6k!:D

adam 19-Jul-2003 22:39

8-9-10k then you are on another planet.
just stay away from the limiter as mentioned already, enjoy.

Yellow Bip 20-Jul-2003 18:06

I often take mine just above 10k but when i had 50mm Termis complete system the limiter seemed to disappear or does it just further up the Revs? as i 0ften found myself revving the nuts out of it before i changed.
Oh by the way i have 45 mm termis back on her now as got complaints about the noise with 50's, not that there is much difference in noise when they are opened right up.

flyingbanana 20-Jul-2003 19:32

10 and a half

Power ends at 9k for me on my 853sps but can't help but let it howl
good servicing should see no probs whatsoever with high revs. watch that limiter though ooh nasty.

What do you reckon bob ?

:rodent: nuts

DJ Tera 20-Jul-2003 20:20

mine kicks in at 10.5K, power doesnt drop off by more than 1-2 hp :D

Will hitting the limiter often balls it up?

kfz2 20-Jul-2003 22:22

Its more important that you dont labour the motor esp below 3K. Change theoil, do your valve maint, look after your belts, warm the engine throughlyand then thrash it within an inch of its life they love it.

Flanners 21-Jul-2003 09:33

Went for the first real blast on it yesterday down to Rye. Took it up to 9K it really starts tonking along. Thoroughly enjoyed the ride, left my mate on the twisties from Rye through Camber Sands! Love it.

No sports bike should be riden at 6-7k revs

paulk 21-Jul-2003 11:53

Think I read somewhere peak torque 8500 revs and peak power 9500 revs.

dickieducati 21-Jul-2003 12:03

get it dyno'd then you will know where your peak power / torque is. very useful as can change from one bike to the next and you can decide what revs to keep it between to keep on the pace.

swiss 998s 21-Jul-2003 12:30

Per the Dyno;

Peak pwoer on my 998s is at 10,250, 136 HP peak torque is 76 ft lbs at 8k.

To me the point we ride Dukes is that I have more than 70 ft lbs available between 5.5k to 10k "ride the torque" forget about constant changes and concentrate on smooth.

Yes - but Flanners has a 916bp so peak power will be lower. Italian Bike quotes it at 105bhp @ 9000rpm for a '98 916.

Nice point ... "ride the torque".

Flanners 21-Jul-2003 15:49

Cheers hopefully I've got a bit more with the pipes and chip.

swiss 998s 22-Jul-2003 09:59

My issue is not just how much, rather the shape of the curve. The torque curve is basically symetrical about the maximum point, therefore for any given gear the bike will pull as hard between 6 and 7 k as between 9 and 10k.

This should(?) apply to all 7/9** engines if well mapped.

swiss 998s 22-Jul-2003 10:00

Sorry about the big pic, how do you get it smaller?

flyingbanana 22-Jul-2003 20:51

Had the banana redynoed today

down at TTS. there are some intresting power reading differences which are due to TTS using a car dyno which has some kind of weight difference in the mechanics of it that I can't remember hence different readings to the bike dyno DSD has which measured the bike at 110, TTS had it at 105. they reckon theirs is out by 5/6 % because of the extra weight the bike is turning. The engine is just pure evil now from 3k to 11, simply heartstopping. It feels torquey-er but they forgot to hook the tacho up so no chart for that. Now all I have to do is learn to ride the thing properly.

:rodent: lucky git.

and no hitting the limiter isn't the worst thing you can do but you wouldn't want to ride into a brick wall to often would you same goes for the engine. the whole point to the limiter is it stops the revs before you can damage the internals but it ain't half rude about it.

:rodent: one should have more manners.

Flanners, one point to remember. Always allow a couple of minutes from starting her up to allow the oil to get to the top end. Never rev her up till she is fully warmed up, bit like her indoors realy.
