Mugged....By a CAR !!! Riding back home last night after the North Bucks meeting at Chichely, I decided to just take the direct motorway route home. Got off at J13 and headed up through Ridgmont towards Ampthill. Going through the 30 mph limit in Ridgmont I came up behind two cars. As the 30 limit ends, there is a short straight bit followed by a lovely left hand sweeper and I didn't want to get hung up behind two cars through there. The short straight usually works to my advantage because it's an easy overtake for a bike, but usually too short for a car to think about, so as the 30 limit ended I thought "right, I just blast past both of these boxes now..." then as I pulled out, the car following the first pulled out to overtake as well. "Damn" I thought "that's messed my run up to the left hand sweeper" and eased off the throttle to wait patiently behind the car. Then I whacked the gas open again as I realised that the ordinary looking car in front was seriously quick...I was pinned through the gears chasing the damn thing and it was outdragging me...through the left hand sweeper at track day pace and the thing was still getting away (although he did run very wide on the exit). A spirited chase ensued and after I had got over my surprise at how quick this thing was, managed to maintain the gap. I caught him again as he had to slow for a queue of cars behind an artic (wouldn't have done otherwise) and I had enough time to read what it was..A Nissan Skyline GT-R if that means anything to anybody. I know I've only got an ST2, but even a mere 85 bhp is enough to see off most cars this side of Porsche Turbos and the like. |
Nice car - chauffered by a computer :P I believe it's fairly easy to get them up to 1000bhp and more :o [Edited on 8-6-2005 by domskidue] |
im afraid there are plenty of tricked up cars that will see of 85 ponies. especially in a straight line |
GTR Skyline - awesome bits of kit. Very fast. They started entering them in the touring car championship in Australia, along with the Cosworth turbo's and were banned! They took everything to a whole new level and Ford and Holden stopped selling V8's to the masses while they bought fast 6 cylinders! |
Skyline..... Oh yes!! |
mmm I loikes Skylines - we had one a while back, then followed it by having a Pulsar GTIR - both went like stink:cool: |
I had a similar experience a few weeks ago down Hartside, Subaru Imprezza driven by a lunatic, caught up to him on the top section and and he accelerated hard, he hit the first blind left hander flat out and on wrong side of road , he set up on wrong side of road again for a blind right I just backed off, the guy was an idiot and could have killed anyone coming up, I didn't want that on my conscience so made it clear I wasn't playing. Theres always times when cars are faster than bikes. You'd need a quick bike to keep up with a well tuned Skyline |

Sure, there are plenty of tricked up cars about, and I'm well aware that my ST isn't the fastest thing on the planet, but at 300 Kg with me on it, 85 bhp equates to about 250 bhp/tonne. So, with an average sports car weighing about 1500 kilos, you're talking about cars with about 375-ish bhp... Porsche, TVR, Ferrari...Not what I would've expected from something that looks like a repmobile. I'm not sure about the straight line bit either. I can stick with an Imprezza in a straight line (well, a normally tuned one anyway) but I wouldn't fancy my chances around the twisties. [Edited on 8-6-2005 by Jools] |
Skyline GT-R, yes mate seriously ferking quick. Having worked a lot over the years in Japan it always amused me that you could buy such a quick car for a country where it was hard to get above 30mph. My mate blagged a test drive once in Tokyo and never got about 60 :lol::lol: |
Middlehurst Nissan down the road from me, the only UK official importer/tuner.... they have some very nice examples, and tuned to the nines |

Yeah, it is amazing how many tricked out cars they have considering the congestion. I don't think i'd want to test drive any vehicle in Tokyo :) In the cities its not easy but once you get outside them theres some well quick roads with no traffic. Did a trip up to Arai mountain from Osaka and I don't think we dropped below 100 most of time, suped up Type R Honda, radar detector fitted, stunning views of South China Sea, memorable. the run back into Osaka at night was like playing Gran Turismo. |
Ahhhh...that explains a lot. Just did a quick Google search and found out that lots of people tune these things up to anywhere between 500-650 bhp....for the road :o:o:o Track day specced cars? They're talking 800+ bhp :o:o:o And as for the drag racers.... [Edited on 8-6-2005 by Jools] |
I know there is a 650bhp version lurking the roads of Oxfordshire and if rumours are to be believed there is also a 1000bhp one about, I have only come across the lesser of the two. |

dont even start talking to AK about that Jools err, actually: anyone want an engine? 488cubic inch, over 800bhp... just sitting about Al is enjoying playing with the little DD bike engine, and not getting the other into the car - so it does need to go sometime |
Obviously you have never experienced the acceleration of a tuned NSU Quickly Jools!:o:lol: |
Steve Burns of silly turbo GSX1250 in a Spondon frame fame in Manchester had a Cosworth engine in a Transit van which used to suprise lots of people |
The Nissan is not only quick but everything is controlled by computer. It is very hard to loose control in one of these things. Clarkson hated it, said it was too easy to drive fast. * There is an unmarked WRX Sub in Lancashire, so be careful which tricked cars you try to overtake. |
Very, very quick car - used to own a 328 bhp Scooby-doo WRX STi, and the Skyline R34 is the next level up - once p1ssed all over my car on a silverstone trackday, disappeared into the distance with suprising ease. Active-yaw control is the most impressive bit, had everything and the kitchen sink thrown at it with regards technology. Amazingly easy to drive as well. - just look a little bit poo. Like a Cortina on steriods. Jas |
I ended up next to one in the queue for the lights at the Winchester end of the A34. Wound the passenger window down and gestured politely to get the drivers attention. "Are these as good as the comics say?" I asked the gent. The grin and smile said it all. Top tools.............. |
I hate cars that think they can race me. I always drop back about 10 yards, make sure they can see me in their rear view, maintain my acceleration to match theirs ... and wait for the traffic. There's no doubt that certain cars can beat my bike in certain circumstances ... it's in traffic they're stuffed. :D ... and when we hit traffic, I just pull up alongside, give 'em a little wave, and zoom ahead. Childish but satisfying nonetheless. ;) Competitive, moi :saint: [Edited on 8-6-2005 by Redruth] |
:lol:I got wasted by a Porsche Cayenne Turbo S just after i bought my 749,you would'nt have believed a 4x4 could go through twisties so quick,165mph top end as well! |
hehe theres no shame in being beaten by that car. One of my favourites, its also a 4 wheels drive so you wouldnt touch it for handling either, hmm a skyline or a Supra yes please ! /ian |
There are a few cars out there that will give the majority of riders a run for their money. A month or so back i was out in my car on a favourite biking road not far from me and ended up blitzing about half a dozen bikes including gix600's and a nice sp1! the look on the riders face :o as i pulled alongside overtaking at .......was priceless! (shouldnt say how fast as i'm sure someone will tell me how irresponsible i am!):smug::P |
ps. the riders on the gix 600 and sp1 were going for it:devil: |
chillo, you are SO irresponsible!! Right, that's out of the way - how fast were you going :D |
ermmm......... i reckon the guys on the bike must have been doing 130-140ish;) |
what were u driving man, must have been quick. /ian |
on a (private;)) test road i've had it up to an indicated 185mph i'll give you a clue: its a car with decades of pedigree |
911? |
correct! its a 996C2 3.6 modded with fabspeed exhaust, induction kit and BMC f1 race air filter. putting out about 335bhp (320 stock) and weighing in at a fairly light 1375kg all up with fuel and driver:burn: sounds wicked when its on cam! (which is all the time! ) didn't get it to just polish it:D Done one track day with it and murdered all the scoobies and evos that were out there on the day! But to be honest i was going mental in it! engine still a little tight (5k) but its getting better now i'm getting some miles on it! can be a bit of a handfull for the unwary! but great fun for chasing just about anything! Just make sure it isnt an unmarked police car! (thats another story!):pig: have got a pic somewhere from the trackday, will try and find it [Edited on 9-6-2005 by chillo] |

Sounds like you definitely got the right one then ;) |
Chillo, where you been on the track with it? Cadwell or Croft? Been doing a few days in a Evo. only stock at the moment, just bolt a set of slicks on. I can get round Croft faster in the car but that is nothing to shout about. Can't compare at Cadwell cos of the bike only chicane. Ray. [Edited on 9-6-2005 by Ray] |
Ray, Unfortunately it was only Elvington! great day but over half the circuit is concrete which kills your tires big style! Good place to do your first car track day, open pit lane etc One of the driving instructors was chasing me in a modded scooby sti spec c with slicks on, couldn't catch me but to be fair i didn't think i was pulling away either. I managed to spin it twice in the dry and in one session when it rained! :P There was a guy there in Challenge Stradale! sounded mint but he wasn't really thrashing it! I'm not planning on cadwell or croft purely because of run off issues and clauses in track day insurance is daft! unless anyone knows of a decent company that does track day insurance? Hoping to do bedford aerodrome, lots of run off in all directions and i've seen some Carrera GT's and enzo's go round there before! schwinnnggg! ps. sorry don't mean to hijack the thread!:saint: ![]() pps think i only managed to get onto 3 wheels because of lip in the track surface, i think!:) [Edited on 9-6-2005 by chillo] |
very nice, have u been up against any 350Z's? /ian |
Chillo, Been to Elvington as well with the Javelin lot. The place is a well known tyre killer. 4 to six in one day is not unusual. Auto 66 run clubbie bike racing on there and also used for runs up and down for F1 cars until the locals got into full NIMBY mode. Anyone who goes at any sort of pace end up on three wheels:o the grip is BIG and road suspension are the cause. The inside rear is the favourite on an EVO. Don't kid yerself that it can't go all Pete tong there, If the run off area is soft and you hit it sideways you could end up on the roof, experiments are continuing! There is also the odd Gully or earth bank to look out for if you are exploring the surrounding countryside! Ray. [Edited on 9-6-2005 by Ray] [Edited on 9-6-2005 by Ray] |
not been up against any 350z's yet but i know they are quite quick! played with evo8's and sti scooby's on the road too mention but a few! everyone who thinks they have a quick car wants to play and i always oblige! Mate was at the trackday with his M3csl and we were going round together, that is an awesome car! (induction noise like in a 360!) Nearly got one of those but went for the porker instead:cool: the run off at the track days run on airfields is very good but yes i was aware of possible excursions to the turf might not be 100% kosha!:o [Edited on 12-6-2005 by chillo] |
