Clutch spider spring failure

I believe there have been a couple of threads on this but it looks like this is the cause of my slipping clutch -

Does anyone have a spare I can borrow whilst Nelly trys to source me another new one?

How long should these things last anyway?

The clutch is as dry as a bone, presumably the Silverstone gravel and dust didn't help, and I am fully aware that the 'spiders feet' need regularly greasing.

One other point - the STM maintenance guide suggests clean, grease/overhaul every 2,000 KM, i.e. every 1,250 miles whereas I've done 4,000 miles on this clutch with 5,000 miles on the plates.

Anyone care to share their experiences/suggestions?

Dunno about how long they last, but as far as I am aware you're clutch should be stripped and regreased every 1000 or so miles, it's the bearing ramp assembly that needs this.

Someone put a post up months ago now about some Rocol grease that is super high temp designed for similar applications

ttstu 08-Jun-2005 20:54

Well that is something I didn't know. Is there a guide on maintaining it yourself? Can't see anyone getting a dealer to do it every 1000 miles!

Dave I would have thought Alan at AJ Racing would have been worth a call for getting hold of one, he may even have used ones around as he probably replaces them on race bikes as a precaution

chillo 09-Jun-2005 02:28

i've had 2 fail on mine, the last one was about 100 miles after the slipper clutch was fitted (by dealer) cost £40 for another:mad: getting replaced this week during service.

Dealer enquired with Duk and was told there isnt a problem but they do fail on the race bikes!:saint:

Will be keeping an eye mine when i get it back.:borg:

Boingggg..

Anyone got one that I could beg, borrow, steal or even buy?

:(:(

Felix 09-Jun-2005 12:15

Are they the same as the ducati race items? I've got one of those.

keefer 09-Jun-2005 12:22

as above Dave

They probably are the same. Nelly tells me the DP one is the same.

This is it from the catalogue

Felix 09-Jun-2005 12:31

Yes, same part number.

nelly 09-Jun-2005 19:25

david, they should work fine. I've not been at work today, and all my efforts yesterday proved fruitless. I should have loads of the bloody things next wek tho.................
If you can take up either of the guys offer of a borrow, or you want me to replace theirs, then take them up on the offer. It'll be your best chance for the weekend. We can sort the detail next week.

keefer 09-Jun-2005 19:28

went round to help Everton today
dropped in the new spider spring cleaned all the plates
but no joy still slipped badly

everton 09-Jun-2005 19:32

Keith is right, still slips :(

Do you have a set of 12 tooth STM plates Nelly, the part no & description is;

003PD001 Evoluzione racing clutch disc set 12 teeth for STM clutch code 003MG001

Will try changing the plates next as one of them may be warped.

Actually, I am not surprised by that. I run a whole race with a broken spider spring. The spring gets compressed so much that a break in the ring part of the spring won't affect it too much usually. Still, you need to replace it obviously.

More likely, your clutch pack height was on the lower end of the scale to begin with and now with some wear on the friction plates, it has gone below the minimum level. Inspect the friction plates. If the have friction pads left on them, put them back in but use more plates or a couple of thicker steel plates to bring the stack height back to an acceptable level. Also make sure that the spring plates have some spring left to them and have not gone flat due to overheating.

keefer 09-Jun-2005 19:46

problem was that Everton had no spare plates. well one thinner one donated by skids.
the stack was on the low side but it was worth a try with the new spider.
just going to have to byte the bullet and get some new ones hey

nelly 09-Jun-2005 20:03

Sorry David, no 12T plates in. stock Ducati ones will work just as well though.
If you've got the thinner plate, add it to the pack. Put it behind the pressure plate.
It'll increase the preload on the springs and provide more pressure on the pack itself.

Felix 09-Jun-2005 21:28

I've got a few steel plates, various thicknesses, if you're stuck, 12 tooth Ducati ones, that is.
