Free Donut

To the person who guesses how many rockers or rocker arms i will need :sniff:

Don't know myself yet as i just got in from work at 10.30pm to find "hi Nigel its Alf i've found a bit of wear on your rocker arms give me a ring so we can work out were we can go from here " on my answer phone

TP 08-Jun-2005 23:51

rcgbob44 08-Jun-2005 23:57

Mr_S 08-Jun-2005 23:57

NBs996 09-Jun-2005 00:02

12 (one more than me)

domski 09-Jun-2005 00:24

23?

My race number and championship position :(

Nigel C 09-Jun-2005 00:34

Thanks guys thats really made me feel better :rolleye:;);)

Sorry to say this but any more than two and it'll be the end of my 748 ownership :(

Mr_S 09-Jun-2005 01:10

Nigel,

Try to get some second hand heads that can be stripped for spares if it's that bad for you. It's what I did ( although I got the heads in advance, just in case)..

moto748 09-Jun-2005 01:30

Hmm, message doesn't sound optimistic.

Hope it's what I had (one, after 40000 miles), but I'll guess 4.

Good luck!

Godders 09-Jun-2005 11:29

Have a look at this in the market place - any use?

Ericsson's stripped the rockers out already..

ziggi 09-Jun-2005 17:02

1 opening rocker , 1 closing ... same as me. Cost = # of rockers failed x £81

PB 09-Jun-2005 17:06

I too was going to guess 4, but I'll go for 3 - but I hope for Nigel that it is only 1 !

Good luck......... and let us know.......

Nigel C 09-Jun-2005 18:24

Well it turned out to be 2 opening rockers in the end with the advice that a closing one may be needed at the next service so i'm sort of happy and gutted at the same time :puzzled:

was going to post a pic but you've all seen pictures of the buggers before so i wont .

many thanks for the concern :)

While i was there i asked about the price of a new middle and lower right hand fairing! I wished hadn't cos its pushing £500.

Apart from the rockers everything else was ok which is nice :rolleye:

so it looks like it's 748 for another year  JUST :rolleye:

Nigel C 10-Jun-2005 18:46

well all the above is pretty irrelevant now as i may have a new steed within the next week :(

Dibble 10-Jun-2005 19:04

noooooo ... why ???? explain ????

Nigel C 10-Jun-2005 19:38

Several things really Pietro

I've had for three years enjoyed the company and the bike but I need a change. (of bike that is ;) )

I was quoted a book price of 3100 3400 for my bike with 11000mls on the clock mine has 18500
keep it for another year and it'll be worth Bugger all so i'm going for a px as they offered me a better price.

Fairing middle and lower right hand side are junk can't afford to repair or buy a new one .

Bills are catching up on me :rolleye: and to be honest I can't afford to keep up I've paid for a new sprocket an new clutch basket and plates and two rockers at £81 each and then there's the 18000ml service on top of that.

What am i looking at a ZX7R Xreg with 3000 mls on the clock , a monster 600 , a cbr 6 and a ZX9r
decision could be made tomorrow morning

I need something more practical i need it for commuting and that would just kill it and push up the service costs

Dibble 10-Jun-2005 19:48

thats fair shout mate, depending on the year my money would go on the CBR6, thats what I had before the Duke, couldn't fault it as an everyday tool you can also go out and play on .... zx7r a bit long in the tooth and the zx9r too lardy .... monster 600 gutless after the 748.

good luck mate.

Mr_S 10-Jun-2005 21:03

7R 's the one I'd take.

Similar chassis geometry to the 748, extremely stable yet capable, classic shape, easily tuned.

probably the only bike from K I'd buy.

TP 10-Jun-2005 21:18

I'd pick the 7R too, great front end, very planted (see what I did there dseered  ). Not much less toe than the 9R but better handling.

I've got a soft spot for the greenie's though ...

Having said that, you are considering some fairly different bikes there. A monster in the same class as a ZX7R and ZX9R? Hrmm .... I think if you figure out what you want to do with the bike first, the rest will follow. (Yoda_mode!)

Nigel C 10-Jun-2005 21:23

Just mentioned the monster as i thought it looked all sad and lonely in the corner of the showroom :( it did tempt me a bit but if it had been a 620 then it definitely was an option

i am warming towards the 7R the mileage is the winner for me i think and its immaculate

Oh and i owe you a Donut :D if you come to the sussex meet i'll bring a bag along and share them out

thats if i'll be allowed in if im riding a bike from the darkside :rolleye:

I cant believe that anyone would serioulsy think about an M600 in the same company as the other bikes you mention! Cracking bikes but 50hp compared to 140 odd for the 9R - not really in the same league.

Oh I dunno Paul, I went around the outside of a ZX9R at Clearways at Brands on the monster :D

Nigel, not sure about the Sussex meet mate - when's the next one? I'll be at Charlotte's tomorrow at some point though ...

rockhopper 10-Jun-2005 21:51

True perhaps in the corners Tony, just look at what WJB and pals get up to on their CB5's

maybe not but its still a ducati of sorts and i almost felt sorry for it

rockhopper 10-Jun-2005 22:38

They are kind of cute and cuddly!

psychlist 10-Jun-2005 22:57

Whatever you choose.......

.........you're one of the stalwarts of the Sussex region Nigel, how could you possibly think you wouldn't be welcome!!
Just make sure you park the Zed outside Cissbury Leathers tho ok

Henners 11-Jun-2005 07:38

Sorry to hear this Nige ...

... you were one of the first people I met when I joined the DSC and you've always been a great supporter of the local meets. You and your yellow 748 and roof helmet are almost club mascots in Sussex/Surrey/Hants you're that special to us. If they forgave me the transgressions of a VFR750 and a MV then you have nothing to worry about ;)

Make a wise choice as TP says ... buy the bike for what you need it to do if it's to be more than a play thing. Hope to see you soon and if you ever get the need to feel what a Ducati is like to ride again just shout - you can take mine out anytime. All the best :)

rcgbob44 11-Jun-2005 19:03

Sorry to hear of your dilema Nigel, I hope you get the bike that suits your needs etc etc etc, But long term I know you will want another Duke and someday you will get another..............I did.

Good luck mate.

And i'll still be on the board as well ;)

Yes Bob the long term aim is get another Duke but now is not the time :sniff:

Don't know if it is the one best suited for what your needs are, but I would go for the ZX7R personally. Owned a 1998 model for a couple of years and I still miss it to this day. The design is definitely long in the tooth, or it might also qualify as timeless. She probably was a bit heavy in the really tight stuff and at the track (didn't know any different at the time), but was really in her element in the high speed sweepers. Always stable, always fast.
