Copying CD\'s/Ipod Help Required Lets say..hyperthetically..erm..that friend wanted to copy some CD's (the stoopid ones with copy control) onto his PC so he could put them on his Ipod...is there a way round this ?? My mates got a works PC so has to be careful about what he downloads, and hes a bit of a numpty with pooters! Help/advice appreciated...he's just gone to put some new CD's on his Ipod for his holidays tommorrow and having a nightmare. I will endeavour to pass any information onto the appropriate person of course..ahem..:D Nat |
Not sure about the IPOD ITunes software, but if you simply put the CD in and load up the standard Windows Media Player, there is the facility to 'copy from CD'. Select that, copy the CD (gets put into a specific directory thats chosen in the options menu, or usually just get put in 'My Documents') and you have it on your hard drive. Next is to load up the Itunes software and simply copy the new files over to the Ipod. There may be a facility to 'copy from CD' there but havent used it yet. Good luck! |
Thanks Sonic..how do I find windows media player (Ive got XP)..sorry if im sounding thick..!! Nat |
No probs, its the standard media player that comes with the XP package. Go to your start button (bottom left), 'All Programs' and it should be in that list. if all else fails, put in a CD and a box will appear asking you what you want to do with the disc, one of the options will be 'play using media player'. Select that and the program will open. once open (if youve got the latest version) there will be a tab at the top saying 'Rip'. Or if youve got an older version it will be on the left saying 'copy audio from CD'. Your basically copying from the CD to your harddrive. Completely legal stuff as you can make as many copies of CDs you want as long as you own the original. therefore you can use the help files in media player if you get stuck as well. Once youve copied them you can use Itunes to put them on your Ipod. Tell me how far you get and Ill help you along ;) |
Nat if you (sorry your mate) has ITunes (i.e. it comes with the iPod in the box) you simply stick you Cd in your drive and iTunes starts up automatically. In the top RH corner is an 'import' button. If you click this iTunes starts reading the CD into you 'archive'. Once read the songs can then be uploaded to your iPod though the USB lead (also supplied in the iPod box) HTH. Gc |
Nat, If you're still struggling, give me a call. I've just tried your mobile, and funniely enough, it says you're on holiday. Rgds, Rob |
wahey, what Guido said, so you must have the ability to import using the Ipod software, should be straightforward after that. |
Thanks guys...just got back. Fantastic break in Mallorca apart from; a) Outgoing flight cancelled and 14 hour delay for new plane/airline on way out (with 2 kids under the age of 4 thats not really an option - especially when id hyped my son up for his first meaningful plane flight !) b) Been run off the road on arrival and bending the rim, exploding the tyre on my hire clio. Roads around north mallorca are shockingly narrow and badly maintained in te remote areas. c) Not being able to get wheel of above (heat/sand just seemed to have welded the wheel to the hub!!) d) 18 month old daughter pushing over two pool lights round the villa causing them to shatter everywhere - thought id cleaned it all up until I got a big spear shaped bit of glass embedded in my foot ! e) Son falling off wall short boundary wall and landing feet first into a cluster of cacti - spend 20 minutes picking the spines out of his heel/foot with him screaming in my ear ! Luckily I had my swiss army card and some precision tweezers to do it (if you havent got a swiss army card then get one - most useful thing youll ever own !!) e) Litre bottle of bacardi imploding in my suit case - before we even checked the bags in on the way back !!) f) Return flight cancelled and another delay while we were found another airline (Air Finland !??). Note to ones self; NEVER use excel airways again Using Sonics method managed 1 album but the others are still a non starter due to teh copy protection...Rob..ill bell you when ive ploughed through my 396 work e-mails ..:flame: Back to reality :o:lol: Cheers Nat |
Copy protection on CD does my head in - for exactly this reason. Far too many issues to discuss here, but if I got a CD which I couldn't rip to my MP3 player I'd take it back to the shop for a refund. :flame: |
I agree ant..but I tend to buy my CD's from CD Wow (based in Hong Kong).so returns would be a pain in the arse. Nat |
Lol, yeah I guess so... I'm finding that Tescos are doing some great offers at the moment on CDs and DVDs - about 8.99 or so for the latest releases. Don't know how this compares to CD-WOW as I've never used them, but unless you get free postage from Amazon then it beats them. Also, Tescos have opened up a Jersey shop so you save on the VAT online too, which helps bring the price down a bit. |
Wifey bought 4 recent release (Coldplay, Nat/Imb, Athlete etc) Cd's from Tesco's all for sub £9. Play.com and Amazon were above this if you count in the hassle of setting up web accounts etc. (Play.com does free postage Vs chargeable postage from Amazon). |
If you have access to an old mac running OS9 you can usually get around the copy protection. Seems some of the protection writers forgot about legacy macs :) |
True, try different software too, some pick it up, some dont.... or just do what those crazy kids do, which is really naughty.. ahem.. and download something like http://www.edonkey2000.com/downloads.php (apparently its the free one towards the bottom) ... someone I know has downloaded for years, all movies and albums, and i... erm... he has never had any issues with viruses etc (tried most p2p's, well, he has...) |
Yes, there are ways round most of the copy protection mechanisms (this is the best one!) but it's just annoying that they are there in the first place and stop me from doing what I want to do with it - purchase the album as a CD and then put it on my MP3 player. Ok, so I could legally download (and pay for) it from iTunes but then what happens if I want to play that album in the car? Surely I've purchased the rights to listen to that music as I want, not just sitting at my PC? Yes you can download it from the p2p networks, but again this is hassle and the next thing you know is you'll get a letter from the BPI suing you for downloading music. |
Alcohol 120% handles alot of audio protected CD´s without too much problem. |
I wondered how long it would take for you to show up :D |

if you purchase off itunes store you can burn a CD surely?? you won't have the album artwork or case |
Dunno - I don't use iTunes as it's not compatible with my MP3 player. What happens if my pc fails and trashes all those MP3s? Do I have to buy them all again? |

The same thing that hapens when you scratch a CD :) You can back itunes tracks up to a dvd disc and reinstall them if needed. I still prefer CD's though but my missus is sick of them lying around all over the house :) |
Good point. It's when the feds raid your house and you've got nothing but CDRs in stacks, and trying to explain to them that they really are legal that would worry me! |
Although it's not common knowledge you can actually download the music from yoru Ipod back to your computer, and technically someone elses if necessary. Although this isn't supposed to be possible as it could infringe on copyright as you could fill your pod up and dump the lot at your mates house and give him up to 60Gb of music. |
Ive downloaded, im guessing, around 500gig worth of stuff in the last couple of years, films, music, training CD's, absolutely anything I fancy, true, one day I might get done, but I know for damn sure Ive saved myself at least 10 grand on buying them off the shelf. I download, then put on the ipod, or write to a CD and play in the car. With the amount of people on p2p, and the amount getting sued, you must be around 1 in 5-10 million of a chance. Its still a chance, like riding without leathers, but I simply cant go into a shop and buy a CD anymore... i must have jewish ancestry or something... |
