Frame question help please. I have just bought a Ducati frame as well as other bits to build up a hybrid bike. Im a Ducati virgin but I think the frame, which I have to apply for the v5 is a 916. Numbers on headstock look unmolested but a few digits are hard to read because of rust (its not in the best condition). Numbers read ZDM9--S * 00xxxx * Where the two -- is very difficult to see thought it was 00 but could be 16. The xxxx are clearly visable just for security. As I say I think this is a 916 (or could it be an SS frame) so should the -- read 16, would that make sense. Or could anyone point me to where I could find out so I can apply for v5. Thanks |
My 996 has 748 in the big number because that was the original bike. I think yours will have to be either 748 916 996 or 998? Sometimes if you shine a torch on the number at angle while in the dark it can give you a better reading. :) |
Thanks dunlop, Ill go have another look. Use a magnifying glass, its just those 2 digits cant make out. |

Thanks for the links. Just spent two hours trying to read those digits, they still look like 00 to me. Taken pictures and blown them up but hasn't helped really. http://jpegbay.com/gallery/001389524-6.html#6 These look exactly like mine, same No. of digits same format much clearer. Anyone have a No. for Ducati UK importers so I can contact them. Thanks. |
photos are of a 600 Monster frame Do you have a pic of your frame |
The link was for the style and amount of digits (13) in the vin, the frame is different to mine. I'm sure mines a 916 style with detachable sub frame, its not the 2 valve SS, Monster style frame those 2 digits which look like 00 don't add up though. ZDM9--S* Its really difficult to see,the clutch lines been rubbing on the headstock, with a bit of rust right on those 2 digits. Ill take some pics of it later if I can get over there. Beginning to think I should have stuck with a Bros, but I like the idea of an air cooled 2 valve. Any joy on Ducati UK Tel. No. Thanks Forgot to ask is there anywhere else on the frame where nos. might be. There is a silver sticker on the left side frame tube which runs vertically down towards foot pegs, but anything that was on there has worn off., |
If you look through the registry there are quite a few starting ZDM916S http://micapeak.com/reg/view2/916/all/2/25/YYYYYYY/ |
1 Attachment(s) Vin Nos. This is the clearest picture I've got, looks like zeros |
Looks like ZDM 900 to me.... The zero's are crossed thru so they don't look like O's. Not sure how far back VIN check looks back on my system. Pm me your last six numbers...the 0014-- number in the photo and I'll check. |

To be honest that looks like a home done number and not a factory one. There seems to no consistancy in the size, shape and straightnes of the numbers. The factory ones are done by a machine and therefore reflect that. |

I thought the same, Last year I was given to read some ACU paperwork about identifying numbers that had been tampered with and although I can't recall exactly what was on the Ducati page, one theme ran through the whole booklet was the uniform size and spacing of the numbers, You should be able to put a straight edge above or below the frame number and all the digits should be in alignment. |
That,s all I need, so I phoned the Police and, I've got a vehicle check on it. iCarCheck Reg. 1995 It comes back with the same frame no. But only shows last 6 digits, you have to validate it to get the rest. Cant do that without no. off v5. It was cat C in 1996 Colour change 1999 Not marked as stolen or stolen recovered 4 former keepers last change of keeper before the one I got it off 10/2010 Dont know what else to do just send off to Swansea for V5 if its wrong they'll come and take it. Dont know whether this has something to do with it been written of in 96?? |
They will only deface the numbers on a CatB to stop it getting back on the road. Cat C is a fair old whack but still ok for the road and bikes don't require VIC. I think the current MoT is void after a Cat D/C prang, so once repaired and a new MoT she is good to go... |
