Removing tank guard I've removed the standard rubbery tank gaurd to fit the carbon one I bought off Dave (cheers mate!). The standard pad came off easy enough, but whatever Ducati used to stick it on in the first place won't budge. I've tried soaking it in WD40, heating it, pulling it off with my nails (!), but I can't get rid of the little black strips!? I've tried offering up the carbon tank pad with these strips still in place, but it makes the pad sit too far off the tank. Has anyone else replaced the pad, was it any easier, or am I making this hard for myself? ![]() |
I thought the carbon pad sat on top of the standard pad. Could be completely wrong though as I haven't fitted one. :puzzled: |
you do not "heat it" too much then :lol::lol: you need an alcohol base cleaner such as acetone and elbow grease, be careful not to get it on other plastics (it will attack and discolour) i learnt the hard way !!! might be worth taking seat off. |
i watched jhp take mine off,cut the pad out with a stanley knife blade,its the stuff they use on windscreens.as you wont see it under the new cover,i would use a stanley knife,by heating the blade a little it should come away easy |
Using a stanley knife scares the sh*t out of me, worried I might make a mistake and take a chunk of paint out! Chris, I've got some paraffin, will that do? |
as a carpet fitter its my main weapon:devil:,by heating the blade it will cut away like butter,it wont be seen as you cover it with new item? take your time, oooohhhhhhhhh give me a knife:devil: |
parafin would do ,, meths is my tipple of choice if you can't get acetone (same warning.. ) |
Meths |
methalated spirits - that purple stuff b&q garden centres any hardware shops. |
Or in a brown paper bag you can blag off some wino under most railway bridges :lol: |
corr your making me thirsty :lol::lol::lol: |
I have a carbon cover on mine, fitted over the top of the original rubber one. |
who makes it ?i'd rather do that i think. |
Yeah, with hindsight, I would have rather done that! Too late now though... Got most of it off, but its still there, refuses to budge, even after being soaked in Paraffin, my fingers ached after picking it off! Even now, I can't get the carbon gaurd to fit as well as the original :( |
any idea if one is available to replace the HUGE one on SSie's? |
thats a leather cushion isn't it ??!! :lol::lol::lol: |

It is a bit on the big side! - and the MY97-99 bikes have thicker ones than the later bikes. If there is a CF replacement I'll be having one. |
I fitted a casoli carbon tank pad a few months ago. I removed most of the black stuff with a stanley blade and white spirit, then used a really good clear sealant ,taped down with electrical tape,then left over night to dry. Done deal |
