Clutch springs - 996 v Monnie ? I need to strengthen up the clutch in my DD bike as its starting to slip after being installed new at the start of the season. I've already added an additional plate (to aleviate clutch slip on the race starts) but she's still starting to play up again. So to try to avoid another set of plates, can anyone tell me if 996 springs are stronger than my 620ie clutch springs? Or can I just shim out the standard ones to effectively increase the preload (oooh - get me all technical!!! ). Or will different types of oil (synthetic?) make the slip more likely to happen? Ta Tim |
I have a set of 996 springs if you want to borrow some to try ... |
Tim I was told that fully synthetic would bugger up friction plates on the cbr. I've put semi in at the mo. Tim I would think that over shimming would cause the clutch to drag? [Edited on 8-7-2005 by Jon] |

Gents - thanks for the offers - Nick you've a U2U! Quote:
Jon - I am running semi-synth, as for dragging - it would be the opposite wouldn't it - ie the clutch wouldn't engage fully, not be struggling to disengage? Tim |

I was refering to the preloading of the springs, not the additional plates. Besides, the additional plate is just a blank one at the rear to pack them all out. Tim |

Tim is'nt that technically the same thing:puzzled: Help me someone I've just had a re-think, and now know where you are coming from. I think I might have heard somewhere that SS springs are a lot stiffer? [Edited on 9-7-2005 by Jon] |

I think you mite be better off sticking new plates in now if you have been using them since the start of the session with the races you’ve done and all the practise/trackdays. The plates have probably had it. If it has been working fine then plates it is. I would change them now for your racing and keep the ones you’ve got as spares. I know that’s not the most cost effective way but you can’t go out at Donnie with a slipping clutch, I think you have to have a fiction plate at the back of the clutch to build off, or is that just the dry ones :) |

Well many thanks to Nick for the kind donation of some 996 clucth springs. I fitted them late last night for a trackday today and I can confirm 2 things; - they are different to the Monster springs, much stiffer (and shorter) - perhaps more importantly - they fixed the slipping!! - hoo bluddy ray!! Thanks again Nick Tim |

Is the clutch lever travel as stiff as my monster (ooh err!)? |
