Cams
 
Does anyone know what the difference between biposto, sps and r cams is ?
And compared to the 851/888 strada and sp ?

Take a look here Cam Spec's

Pretty good info. Some of the more "exoctic" bikes, specially the earlier ones could have one of a couple of spec's in them. Fairly rare to find but can happen. Must have been "friday afternoon" builds.
You should be able to double check what you have by looking at the cams them selves. The spec is usually engraved on them.

Thanks Nelly, I'd completely forgotton how much stuff Moto-One have on their site.
The graphs are very interesting - 851sp and 748sp with almost identical characteristics.
I can also see why the R has more midrange now, with about the same duration as the street cam but loads more lift. (Good note at the end of Doug Lofgren's article ! So I don't think I want one of those :) )

Well, after reading loads of moto-one's stuff ...
I definitely want to swap my 50mm Termi's for a set of 45s
AND
I want to know more about duc cam dialling !
(I've worked on my velo cam timing a little, but I'm sure that is childs play in comparison !)
Anyone got some vee-two cam pulleys for sale ?

G's are the race cams fitted to the hot 888's. 431's are a slightly milder inlet cam. I'll be fitting these to a 996 (that's in my 888) at the mo. looking for an 1994 corse 888 styleee but in a 996 guise. Alan (AJR) tells me it should be a ball to ride (with the Ti rod, balenced bottome end, Cossy, high comp pistons etc, etc....)

No, I've got an 888 and that's the style I want. I love a project and am very happy to play. Who knows, over time, it may evolve to the narrow head motor. For this winter, we have a pile of bits on the shelf and a simple plan.

Looking for that powerband rush (big smile) at 8k that these cams will give.

It'd be too easy to change bikes for power reasons alone. We'll have a few toys in the toy box, enjoying the one to suit the day.

I'm trying to impose a survival limit by keeping below 100bhp, but I miss the grunt of a 900 engine when I'm riding the 748.
And no, I dont want a gixer (done the mallory school) cos they might as well be strokers for the amount you have to rev them to get anywhere - I've got a 'four' working in its design envelope in my vw box :P
Give me twin-power any day.
I just want my 748 to work as well as it should, not just ok.

Agree, totally. Sorry about the thread hi-jack. I assume you have seen the Moto One and Neil's (Sigma) sites. There's a good bit on getting the best ot of what you've got. My 996 is dialled in, set up on a good FIM chip, and is a pleasure to use. Now, I'm looking for a step.

I've not enquired about setting up costs, cos I'm considering doing it myself ...
the only example I've found is moto-one, who charge: (at just over A$2 to the £1)
A$760 for 4 valve Ducatis. This includes all parts and labour.
(Adjustable cam pulleys cost A$120 each)
Everyone else says they'll work their magic for a fee (but dont ask them what it is :D )
So far as I can tell, the 'magic' is to advance the inlet cam about 6-10 degree from factory spec. (Advancing any inlet cam on any bike will move the torque curve downwards at the expense of the peak power and I've played with that on my velo racer.) The magic is knowing where to compromise :D

Phil,

I had SP cams & pistons fitted to my 748Bip in Feb during a top end refresh (valve seats, lapping, 16 new rockers etc). Also had vernier pulleys fitted and the cam timing adjusted.

All the work was carried out by MotoRapido, and it produced 101BHP before it rolled out on the road (probably more now it's loosened up). Cost of cam timing with Verniers was around 5 hours labour, plus the cost of the pulleys (about £250 iirc)

Since I had all the work done at once, I can't tell you how much difference the cam timing made, but it goes like stink now :)
