desmo series (whats the best bike to get)

hi all
i am looking to compete in the race series but unsure of what model to get!!!
after years of racing a 125 gp at club/national events. this year i opted to build a honda hawk 650 minitwin and after spending over 3+k i hear that this series is running (arse) so my minitwin is going to make way (my loss someone els'es gain:() so i can come and join you guy's

i like the fact that it's well controlled (i hope)
and i'm not having to race a c/ship every other w/end

any machine and general info you could pass on to me would be most gratefull

Hi,

first off, best to check out the current rules for DD

http://217.199.188.40/xmb/viewthread.php?tid=13180

If wanting to obtain the best results you can, I'd say go for a 620 engine as they are putting out about 62 - 64 hp std.

C:)

TP 05-Aug-2005 12:11

Welcome hawk. Hope you enjoy the club :)

While you're at the virtual bar I'll have a large latte.

Now, plenty of race experience .... national level ... hrmmm, what you need is a nice 583cc monster, preferably something around a 94 model with about 100,000 miles on the clock with the big end about to go and just leave it standard, you'll be fine ;) :D

Give us a chance mate!!!

IMO the best bike for the series would be a 620 monster with a 6 speed box and twin disks. Then you can do what you want with it from there (clip-ons, bodywork etc ...).

Hope that helps.

hawk 05-Aug-2005 12:28

thanks tp
latte on it's way when i pop and say hi at brands

like the thought of a monster as its very much like my hawk

TP 05-Aug-2005 12:38

Nice one.

Don't forget .. 100,000 miles ... 94 model .... 583cc .... ;)

domski 05-Aug-2005 12:43

Welcome to the board, mines a Red Bull please :D

You'll notice in the rules that...

"2006

For the 2006 series, entrants will have to have been members of the
Club as at 1 March 2005, novice licence holders or not have raced for
at least 5 years."

...dunno how that will affect you?

TP's right though, you need to find the oldest, roughest pile of nails you can get your hands on ;)

AK 05-Aug-2005 12:59

and:

"Discretion may be shown by the committee towards entrants who do not meet all of these criteria, but who are entering in the spirit of the series.

These rules will not apply to guest riders who will not socre points"

can sell you a 583 engine:saint: or 2:D

domski 05-Aug-2005 13:21

Oh right, I never saw that bit

What a numpty.

In that case, whats the point in the rule :puzzled:

hawk 05-Aug-2005 20:54

right then
old bag of shite it is then!!!!!
does anyone make catch trays for side of engine casses for when crank and rods finally fly out:lol:

domski 05-Aug-2005 21:36

It's almost unbelievable, but with the exception of a couple of 'smokers'... not one single engine has expired yet!!

How amazing is that!?!?!?

...and they get so hot, that even an hour after a race, you still can't touch the engine casing due to the extreme heat.

:o

To try and stop the series getting taken over by racers who see it as a chance to come in scoop up the rewards and then move on without really having any other interest in the DSC or Ducati bikes.
ie not in the spirit of the series. Turning up just for the race meetings on nice new 6-speed 620's all preped by the best guys out there.
But then again if we could get enough for two grids (583 class and 620/675 class) entry requirements could be different for each class.

hawk 06-Aug-2005 21:46

i must stress
i am only racing nowadays for the enjoyment and not to reep any rewards(although they are a bonus)
i'm simply not as quick as my younger days!!!!:barfy:

oh ok then i s**t myself out there a lot more:o

hawk 09-Aug-2005 12:21

ok lads

right got a u2u msg from chris bushell to call him about next year(but he's away now for 10 days and only just managed to work out my controls) i'm a tad rubbish with computers:puzzled:

any way iv'e managed to source a cheap 96 600ss

any good

what do i look out for on this model ?

dickieducati 09-Aug-2005 12:40

Not a lot really, they're pretty robust:
Are the wheels true (front can deform on pot-holes)?
Does it have twin discs? (I only use one, but some like two)
Are the forks still stock (we're not allowed nice adjustable Showas!)

Engine-wise they sound awful as the pistons have short skirts ( :) ) so there's a lot of slapping ( :D ), but it's not something to worry about. If you want to do the 'bigger' class next year (tbc) then you'll probably want the 674 big bore kit. There will probably be a couple going cheap off this years' bikes.

I still reckon they're the best frame to race if you don't want to change the whole bike setup, but the old ones are let down by the forks. Mine's a 95, and as ropey as a bag of rope strung up in the corner of a rope factory, but she goes ok when you show no mercy.... :D

Cheers,

Ali

i found out about the series when i was going through all my entry forms with new era.
gobsmacked and gutted that i didn't spot it sooner in the year!!!!!!!

raced a jhp sorted 955 for a few races in 2000 but due to costs i had to give it a back seat:(

i miss that bike and have always wanted it back but the costs and bank manager will never allow me to!!!!!!!

the dd series looks like a cracking way to be back on a duc at a more afford level:burn:

dickieducati 09-Aug-2005 13:06

hawk, sounds good. as i say hope you manage to join in and are very slow! ;)

WeeJohnyB 09-Aug-2005 13:17

'what to look for in the 600SS'.....I'm not in the series, but from what I've seen and heard, what you need to look for in the 600SS is the 620ie beside it and buy it instead:lol:

paynep 09-Aug-2005 15:08

Make sure that you keep a mirror on the 600 as then you can see all bar 3 of the 620's....:lol:

I could see all bar 2 at the last round. Looked like they needed a bit of help to be honest.....

But WeeJB's right, a 620 to be competitive, a 675 to be creative.

Incidentally, aren't you at all concerned with coming from a 955 down to a lowly 50ish bhp? You may find yourself dipping into your pocket for those ever elusive horses! If you want to be seriously competitive (top 3 regularly) then you'll be spending £5k+ to get there, plus a good dollop of natural ability.

If you're in for the fun of it then I'd suggest one of this season's DD bikes. I'd imagine 4-5 people dropping out over winter, so some bargains to be had methinks. :)

Cheers,

ali

ali

thanks for advice!!!
hmmmm!!!!!
i may just take your advice and wait to see if i can get a ready prepped dd bike at end off season (if you hear of any coming up gimme a whistle)

as for the bhp side of things the hawk 650 that i'm currently racing is only pushing out 71 ponies!!! but to be honest i'm fully enjoying it .

like you say horses help but a lot of it is down to riding ability (in some casses):o
