749S Is this a good price/ HP outstanding????

Have the chance to buy the following standard bike for £6250 HPI clear etc. Whats your thoughts?
April 05 Ducati 749s Biposto. Red. 20 months full manufacturers warranty remaining from Riders Ducati in Bristol. 560 dry miles. This bike has been kept in my house since I have bought it and not in a garage/shed. It is in immaculate condition and still virtually brand new. It is a UK bike with all the documentation and I have a genuine reason for the very reluctant sale.

Seems VERY cheap for a brand new bike. They're £8795 retail, so it's lost £2545 in four months if it goes for that price...

List price is actually £9795 . Surely, it must be dodgy or a msitake :puzzled:

duck 08-Aug-2005 07:38

that is cheap, i've been looking for a while and just paid £6175 for an 04 749s with 1500 on the clock.
it could be an [unofficial] import (which i think mine is) and i've seen them on sale new around £7300 (kjmsuperbike.com to name one).
if it's the new style swingarm etc then i'd bit his/her hand off, either way it sounds like a bargain

Sorry - I misread and didn't realise it was an 'S'.

MUST be an unofficial import, in which case I'd check out the warranty situation before buying.

Michael J 08-Aug-2005 11:04

I'm a bit confused. Are you selling the bike or buying it? If you're buying it and its a UK bike in mint condition as it appears, its a great price. If you're selling it, its very cheap and probably less money than an '04 bike.:puzzled:

Twinfan 08-Aug-2005 11:35

Why is it so cheap though? Smells fishy to me, unless the seller needs a REALLY quick sale?

itexuk 08-Aug-2005 15:48

I'm buying, that was his advert. Its a UK 04 spec 05 reg bike from Riders Bristol, think he needs a quick sale, was on E bay but did not reach reserve. I bid £6150 and he has come back to me at £6250 which he says was his reserve. Going to look at bike / get HPI and will take it from there.
Thanks all for your comments

Michael J 08-Aug-2005 15:51

Get him to meet you halfway on the difference:frog:

itexuk 08-Aug-2005 15:56

Picture of the 749S

Twinfan 08-Aug-2005 15:59

That's an '04 model bike or earlier as it has the grey frame and older style swingarm. That would explain the low price, but even so it's very cheap. Check everything out before buying, and good luck!

itexuk 08-Aug-2005 17:35

Bike has got £3225 outstanding HP on it, if I buy it do I pay HP company or what?????
Pete

ak47 08-Aug-2005 17:40

from exerience I wouldn't touch it until the HP is clear.

If the current owner doesn't pay the rest of the debt then the bike remains the property of the HP company and they can reposses it to sell on to cover the debt, with HP it is not owned by the keeper until paid for in full.

itexuk 08-Aug-2005 18:35

Any one know if I can pay the HP Co the amount outstanding and then the balance to him???
or all to HP company and they pay balance to him.
and how do I do that

He does not have the funds to clear HP until he sells the bike

Make a payment to the HP company for the outstanding balance and ask for them to send you a letter to verify that the dept has been settled and the remaining balance to the owner.

Am not sure about that, as you are elying on him selling you the bike once you have cleared his debt.

It might be sfaer for you both to go to the HP companies offices and exchange cheques, receipts and V5 documentation at the same time and same place. Assuming the HP company are happy to take a cheque form you. They may prefer bankers draft.

The Big Red One 09-Aug-2005 22:27

Take him to the bank and get him to pay it there and then with BACS. We did this with the car. Never had any problems. He needs to get a settlement figure in writing from them and take it into the bank when he pays the balance in full. You get the proof of payment. Job done. Make sure you check the date on the settlement paper work as it only lasts for 2 weeks before the price changes again. hope this is some help

itexuk 10-Aug-2005 12:56

Thanks for all your help, all sorted by mid next week when I pick up bike.
Got myself a bargain, seen bike, docs, etc etc + spoke to HP company Black Horse who are sending me a copy of the settlement figure. Have agreed with seller and Blachkhorse that I will phone them from his house with my Debit card details to clear HP and pay balance to seller.
Got it for a bargain £6100.
:sing:

keefer 10-Aug-2005 13:00

I bought a car with HP still on it.
just paid of the company then gave the seller the remainder which wasn't much by then. must of been gutted

The original owner took a big hit there for just 560 miles (running it in or racing :puzzled: ). I hope he got it for a good price when he bought it. It seems you got a bargain though. Enjoy :burn:

itexuk 10-Aug-2005 17:39

Gather he pair £7495 from Riders Bristol, he needs to sell ( Cash problems ) and it is a buyers market. Tyres not scrubbbbbed in yet so not been thrashed for its 541 miles.
Just loking forward to picking it up next week.:burn::sing:

nah, riders were selling the remainding UK stock back in May, they were not much over £7k. Basically you get what you pay for, an underpowered bag of spanners ; )

Hi RCA,
Never been one to knock another bikers bike, we are all bikers what ever we ride. R1 is a nice bike mate but I prefer my bag of spanners than yours, at least mine's a Ducati:D

So your single requirement for this purchase was that it had to have 'Ducati' written on the tank? Performance & looks were irrelevant? This is typical of someone who is buying into the 'Ducati' brand for all the wrong reasons. My feeling is that this is a compulsive purchase and you are buying it because it is cheap, buy hey, it gets you onto a ‘Ducati’. I rode this bike for half a day and it is seriously underpowered, and has zero grunt, (almost on the verge of being dangerous, given its weight). It sounds totally naff, so you will need another £1000 (which you will not see back) to sort the sound out, and finally you will get a sorry return when you come to sell it, which you will. Given Iam a massive fan of the 998 (and still looking for my baby) I cannot understand why anyone would buy what is basically a **** Ducati bike. I do not care who designed it or the glory, or the name on the tank, etc, it is still a **** bike with a pathetic engine. Next you’ll be buying a Benelli cause they are cheap….That said, if you want your ‘poor mans’ Ducati, good luck, and ride safely (don't worry this is the 749s only mode), and I’ll see you behind, sorry, around.

Enjoy it….

1) The 749 will feel slow if you're used to an R1. There's a 50bhp difference, so what did you expect?

2) This is a Ducati forum. We are quite likely to sing the praises of Ducatis.

3) I find your attitude uncalled for. Please go back to the MCN forum where you belong.

Obviously the A in RCA stands for A>R>S>E>H>O>L>E.

Really don't see the reson for a newbie to come on here and start f**king other people and there bikes off.

Follow the link provided by dsered and don't come back.

****ing other people? Er, is that really possible via a message board, or are we talking virtual sex?

So I take it if one has a negative opinion on any Ducati bike, one is not welcome here? Hhmm, I don't believe you speak for the majority of memebers, they cannot be all as blinkered as you are. I assume in your case, it does'nt even have to say Ducati on the tank, it just has to be red.

It is underpowered, end of.

Take your blinkers off and get yourself an opinion.

Attitude? Have I been rude? Have I been offensive? No, I have simply voiced my opinion. So zip it fatty.

Michael J 16-Aug-2005 10:31

You've made your point RCA. You can leave now since this is going nowhere. You're obviously well 'ard and measure your masculinity by the top speed of your bike.

Personally, I like the looks of the R1 best of all the litre bikes but it's full performance is unusable on the roads whereas you can utilise all the 749's performance and that's the fun of it. I rode my 749s home from Coventry (JHP) to North Wales last Friday and couldn't get the grin off my face. I didn't scare myself shitless, I just had a good fast ride on some great roads.

It's pointless comparing the two bikes and after all, one man's meat is another mans poison. Now be off with you.:sing:

I really don't get your attitude. Yes you have been offensive, and yes you have been rude. What's with the "fatty" comment anyway? Very personal, and you don't have a clue what I look like.

A 749 is underpowered, end of? Underpowered for what? Compared to what? You don't make sense.

Take my blinkers off and get an opinion? I have one thanks - the 749S is the best bike I've ever ridden. Irrespective of the name on the tank, it suits my riding style, I love the looks and I'm very happy with it.

I think you'll find you're the one with blinkers on...

A negative opinion is one thing, coming on here and being rude an acting the **** is another. A guy has just realised "his" dream of buying a Ducati, it may not be your choice but it is his and you come over all contrasending to him.

As for virtual sex I assume you would know lots about that, sorry I don't - so can't answer your question.

As for the type or colour of my bike what the f**k has it got to do with you?

LesPaul 16-Aug-2005 15:57

I was always told if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all, bearing that in mind

itexuk, nice to meet you on Saturday at the DD races, hope you like your 749 and spend all that money you saved on petrol and tyres enjoying it, I've attatched a picture of my old 749 (Black wheels is a good option ;) )

Twinfan, nice to meet you at Donington too, like the sound of your colour scheme, you'll have to put pictures up when it's back :)
