Can anyone explain cricket to me????????

How can a team that only plays 6 men draw with a team that plays the full 11.:puzzled:
Why would England want to declare knowing that the Ozzies could catch em.

Dibble 15-Aug-2005 23:34

don't bother mate, it really isn't worth the effort ... ten pin bowling or pigeon racing is more interesting .

:D

Vaughan declared because he knew that Aus would have to break the record run chase to win the game. He had to balance getting enough runs on the board with leaving enough time to bowl Aus out but not giving them so much time they could just pick off 1 or 2 an over and play defensively to win. It's a delicate decision to make.

I'd be happy to bore you senseless for hours explaining the intricacies of the game. But I'm sure there's a few on here who think I don't have a clue what I'm talking about ... ;)

But why not just carry on with thier innings and run up a unbeatable score?

NBs996 16-Aug-2005 00:12

I used to play for my town, but still don't understand all this... especially the bit where one team gives up (declares) while they're on a roll.

I did learn that it aint an easy game tho...

bradders 16-Aug-2005 00:12

coz they cant win then....test cricket is a game built for drawing!! (crayon and paper included:devil::o)

Because if they did that, and didn't leave themselves enough time to bowl Australia out then the game ends up in a draw. England don't win.

So they need to make sure they had enough runs on the board to force Aus to bat agressively enough to have to score runs to have a chance of winning so they had more chance of taking wickets. The other side to that coin is, if they set too high a total then the chasing side could look at it and decide it's too much and just play defensively for the draw, making it hard for the bowling side to take enough wickets to get them out and win.

It's a subtle game cricket.

I see, well I think I do. Such a bloody boring game to watch, they have to put intricate rules in to stop you falling sleep.

I love it - I could watch it all day every day for a 5 day test match!!

But only if Aus is playing ... not too many test matches go the full 5 days then.

Jon 16-Aug-2005 00:27

I've found myself watching it this past couple of days. I had'nt a clue what I was watching but I know we WHERE winning.:(

Sums it up, Ozz could not beat us, so they went for the draw, either way, that rule is stupid!

Look, here's the most simple and straightforward explanation of cricket:

You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out.

When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game.

Simple!

doogalman 16-Aug-2005 15:23

So why , after days of playing do they DRAW??????????????????????

Mark 16-Aug-2005 15:33

Doogalman, stooooopid ain't it, then i guess, we invent these games and have stoooooopid rules, like the off side rule

TP 16-Aug-2005 16:47

Because you took your foot off our throats for too long ;) A champion will always get back up ...

I believe we had a chance of winning that game yesterday, but England did enough to keep the wickets falling regularly to prevent us from being in a position to launch an attack on the total.

I can't believe you lot can't understand cricket!! Well, Scotsman I can accept ...

Jon 16-Aug-2005 21:53

Up until yesterday tea time I always thought cricket was a game for woofters:) Then I heard Jeff Boycott say, " if they let him have one in the ribbs, that will make him flinch":o
