exhaust mod

has anybody butchered the standard can to get the proper sound/look, if so is it a difficult job?
there is an american site (ducatipipemod.com) that does it but i cant find anyone over 'ere on the interweb. i have access to welding/workshop equipment and i'm sure a local engineering firm could knock up some larger tips without to much trouble. also do you think it's possible to wreck the engine with a delboy exhaust (backpressure or something???..i dont know, comments about it on above website).
any advice on this would be much appreciated

Twinfan 19-Aug-2005 09:22

If you butcher your standard exhaust, you'll need a PCIII and the Co2 trim pots setting by a dealer in addition to the work you'll have to do on the exhaust...

duck 19-Aug-2005 15:33

thats a fair point but from what i've read on this board you need (or it's better to have) a pcIII+dyno time with a termi anyway...

indigoblue73 19-Aug-2005 15:37

I bought one from Ducatipipemod.com and had it fitted last week along with a PCIII usb. I have to say it's fu**ing loud!... Much louder than a standard Termi!
To be honest his welding job was pretty awful and I made him refund me some of the money to have this sorted out.

Also the finish of the Tips isn't that good as well. If you do manage to get some made up let me know as I really want another set welded onto the exhaust to finish it off nicely.

The bike performs great though and is pushing out just under 106BHP at the back wheel which isn't too shabby for a standard '03 749... Plus you can hear me coming from about three miles away!
:sing:

duck 19-Aug-2005 15:49

looking at the rear end pics (on dpm) i see what you mean they look round, not oval shaped? did you have the half or full mod done? i want the look and a better sound but not earth shattering!!
at least if :pig: stops you for a chat you have an eu stamp on it but if it's louder than a termi i doubt that will matter:(

Twinfan 19-Aug-2005 15:55

Even if you have dyno time and a PCIII, you'll still need the CO2 settings done I think? I'm no mechanic, so I may be wrong, but I'm sure the CO2s need to be set correctly for proper running - something to do with the increased airflow???

You might want to fit freer flowing air filters too :)

duck 19-Aug-2005 16:10

filters make sense, no point getting it set up if it cant breath properly!
i'll look into the co2 mystery but i wont even attempt it without some advice about what i'm getting myself into. it's slighty different to repacking a kx250 bean can. has anyone even seen inside the standard zorst?

indigoblue73 19-Aug-2005 16:18

I had the full system done... Well Big Tips & De-Cat pipe. I had the bike fully Dyno'd at Road & Track and he never mentioned changing the CO2 settings on the bike and nor did the pip mod bloke... Is this something I need to do?

Don't suppose any of you guys know a good cheap welder/metal worker in the Surrey area?

sye73 19-Aug-2005 22:12

If it helps,I might have a standard 999R can for sale shortly if someone wanted to try and mod it internally. This would leave their standard one untouched should it all go wrong !!

duck 20-Aug-2005 07:21

how much are you after? i'm not sure if it'll fit an 04 749s.......anyone?

Twinfan 20-Aug-2005 12:59

Won't fit a 749S - I'm sure the Rs have a larger bore.

andyb 20-Aug-2005 13:25

I think ,again, All 749 and 999 pipes are the same in std assymetric trim.

The only time any bore changes is if you go to an equal system ie 54mm 57mm!

The co2 will be sert as part of the 4 gas analysis, Particularly when you set up on a dyno.....this is what you are setting up.

Wait til you start talking about lamda...............

I think you mean the CANS are the same. The pipework differs on the range to allow for the deep sump and '05 style swingarms.:saint:

Twinfan 21-Aug-2005 09:09

I thought the cans on the Rs had bigger inlet bores? Didn't think they were the same bore as a 749 Dark??????

The bores are the same. The only thing as keefy says may be the routing of the front pipe for a deep sump......

indigoblue73 22-Aug-2005 14:43

I remember looking into the difference between the R and standard termi system and keefy is right.
However I think you can get an adapter to sort this problem out... Don't quote me on that though :o

sye73 22-Aug-2005 17:40

not exactly sure what I have in the way of pipe work,as I need to clear out the garage! The 999R can will be £50....if I have any other bits,I'll let you know......:burn:

duck 23-Aug-2005 07:38

Sye, ive managed to get hold of a standard 749 can but thanks anyway. if you have any other bits please let me know :)
Indigo, what has the full mod done to your midrange? do you lose out to gain top end etc:puzzled:

indigoblue73 23-Aug-2005 11:19

The bike now has a very small flat spot around the 3k mark which the Dyno tech couldn't dial out... Apart from that the bike now pulls like a train through the rev range. I would say that it feels smoother than before.

sye73 23-Aug-2005 13:08

No problem Duck.....:burn:

"not tried the Blacksmith in the village then!!!!"

Only just moved to Gomshall... Didn't know there was one

doogalman 24-Aug-2005 19:41

Sorry Abinger actually, Towards Dorking just past little post-office on left. Allways worth asking. from past experiance they can do wonders. Not just with wrought iron. If not they can recomend someone local.

Good luck
