Help please ASAP.

My bike broke down on me yesterday it wont start, it makes a nook noise when I try and start it, and the breakdown man sad it sounds like it is the starter clutch, so I have got the bike in the house now but I cant get the alternator rotor off to see?
By the way the rotor nut was lose can that be the problem ?

Helllllllllllp please
:(

domski 24-Aug-2005 20:38

I think a couple DD boys had a loose rotor nut early in the season, and I believe that made them stop too.

Can't help you though, sorry :(

m1keyp 24-Aug-2005 20:44

Alternator nut should be torqued and loctited as part of a service schedule

If lose it may well have been what was causing the problem.

ok mate, i give it a go and let you no.

keefer 24-Aug-2005 20:56

you should not just do it up.
there is a washer that sits at the back of the whole assembly and can slip of slightly and cause everything to be out of sync.
strip it all down and put it back together correctly then tighten up the nut

simonducati 24-Aug-2005 21:00

how do i get the rotor off

simonducati 24-Aug-2005 21:01

Simon

Keefers link shows the clutch needing held to loosen/tighten the alternator nut.

I found the vise grip type clutch holding tool that they used in the Haynes manual is made in the states with a UK Distributor Motion Pro part number 08-0008

Heres the website http://www.motionpro.com/Docs/servicetools_3.html

And this lot sell them in the UK, around £ 22.00 inc postage, it works well and the company below delivered next day

good man il have one of them, but its not the Clutch side it the other side of the engine mate. Thanks :)

keefer 24-Aug-2005 22:01

dude you need to hold the clutch to undo/tighten the nut

simonducati 24-Aug-2005 22:05

I got it off and it look all good, I had to tap it off. I cant see no damage at the moment, so it mite just need tightening up. Back in a bit. :biaggi:

keefer 24-Aug-2005 22:09

once you have put it all back together (without cranck cover on) you can jab the starter button to see if the sprag clutch is holding. don't let in run though. remove the fuel pump loop so it wont prime.

Beware the starter clutch though.
When it starts to go wrong it makes a sort of screech when you are starting. This noise may be disguised by a chattering if the real problem is that your battery is too clapped to run the starter.
Either way, when you start to get wear in the starter (sprag) clutch, it means taking everything apart again. Oh and if a sprag clutch jams, as they can when they wear cos theyve been used with knacked batteries, they can drop nice little bits of metal into your engine.
From memory, the haynes manual doesnt say much, but the 4v service notes tell you all about it.

simonducati 24-Aug-2005 22:46

ok. The gear from the flywheel goes freely one way but not the other, is that normal ?:)

simonducati 24-Aug-2005 22:48

in the starter clutch
;)

keefer 24-Aug-2005 22:50

that's how the sprag clutch works.
engages when trying to start then spins free when running.

simonducati 24-Aug-2005 22:54

ok i get it, thank for your help, and il let you no how it goes tomorrow:bouncy:

simonducati 24-Aug-2005 23:22

how Tight do I torque the mane nut too?

Fordie 25-Aug-2005 00:21

The Alternator rotor to flywheel/starter clutch bolt is 13 Nm
The Alternator nut is 186 Mn

The reason that I mentioned the clutch tool is that you will see in the guide supplied by Keefer that they held the clutch to undo the alternator nut.

As yours is already loose you won't need one or removing the nut but you may for re fitting.

Good luck and think of us at Brno this weekend:D

:(
I Did it, but its still not working…… so I went back to the clutch side and found that the engine is jamming. If I turn the clutch clockwise a bit and then try and start it it makes a bigger bang when it jams. I’m going to get in to it tomorrow and il let you no how I get on. :puzzled:
