Number board painting I know it's been covered loads of times before but how much would I have to pay for numberboard painting in the Hertfordshire area? Any recomendations would be welcome Thanks |
Steve, dont get it painted, go for the stick on number board, excellent protection against stones and it does'nt chip. |
.....But looks pants !!! :) |
...and peels! |
number boards iv'e been quoted £200 to have mine sprayed - complete with gold pinstripe around edge Company is called "padded cell", and they are near Stanstead airport - they advertise in back of MCN - top work they do too JB748  |
Try Casoli's. They do an exchange service. You give them your nose cone and some money. They give you a nose cone back with a spangly number board painted on. Ive had the stick on jobbies on my 996 and my 998 and found them easy to fit and they look pretty good.IMO. |
The stick on boards are fine as long as you put them on properly with the missus, (or mr's if you're that way), hair dryer. At least they repel stone chips - a painted section ain't gonna do that. Andy |
I don't know why, but I think they make a 9** look cheap (bit a like a Mito), like someone said "the equivalent of putting a spoiler on the back of a punto" - sorry Funny thing is the 999 looks better with one |

Do not go the stick on number board way. They look fine, but peel at the first sign of sun. And don't believe it when people say you can apply them easily ... they are a complete bitch. Even with a hair dryer and taking effing hours over placement and reoving the air bubbles, mine didn't stick in the usual places. And when I finally did take it off, it brought some of the paint with it - the final insult. Either get it painted, or don't bother - but its a taste thing. having done it to my 998s, I think I prefer the naked red look. The stick on board is as Swiss998s says - a bit max power .... IMHO Ps the 999 would look better with a paper bag over it ...... it will never be beautiful .... [Edited on 31-7-2003 by the phantom pieman] |
Pieman If you took a number board off a 998 and stuck it on a 999 it would improve the looks of both, rather like taking a couple stupid Englishmen and sending them to Switz you improve the IQ of both countries |
Got to agree - stick on number boards make it look like wannabe racer bike. Paint doesn't chip, if you get it painted correctly using a two part acrylic paint system which utilses a hardner additive. Done correctly the paint is likely to be stronger than the plastic fairing. |

Paint doesnt chip?! Tell that to my 998  |
DJ - I havent seen your bike but my guess is that if it chips badly its been painted with cellulose paint. Easy safe and quick for the guy painting it - unfortunatey about as robust as Tipex fluid. I have raced mine on an old airfield circuit in a bunch of 40 other bikes, with so many stones flying around that my irridium visor had to be thrown away after two races - the front number board remains unmarked. |
I'm talking about the stock paintwork, doesnt chip really bad but it still chips :( Got a tiny "cut" in my painted numberboard too, 5 days after I had it done  F8ckin motorway maintenance vehicles! |
So anyway is that paint or sticker or leave it naked !! |
Whele, you are a snob, "make it look like a wanna be racer bike, hard to do with a bike which is a race bike to begin with |
Mine is a Foggy rep and I would endorse the painted option looks v cool IMHO especially with the rear done to match and the sticker kit. |
Sorry Adam, wasn't how it was supposed to sound....anyway as an Essex boy .... being called a snob is a compliment  |
only joking Whele, I had the stick on one on two bikes now and both have stayed put . I did'nt know there was a different paint used for the number board, so thought it would chip too easily. Oh well, might go for that option next time. |
I don't think a Ducati Performance sticker board looks like boy racer stuff - it's a genuine part. What does look like a boy racer is the white arse ends put on BPs. What's the point in painting it when it's going to get chipped off straight away? The sticker boards are designed to withstand chips. They are white...so is white paint. Granted, the stickiness may vary, but I've put two on mine...not at the same time...and they've both been fine. The first had to be replaced when she fell over in the garage and ripped it whils shattering the screen. I reckon all those race mechanics out there can only use a hair dryer if it says 'snap-on' on the side. Andy :sing: |
Just to add my bit, I have just got my headlight fairing, with number board, done by ProTwins and it excells my wildest expectations, really glass like finnish with a grey pinstripe, cost a couple of hundred but worth every penny. I had a stick on number board b4 and it was a disaster, kept lifting and the holes around the screen fixing screws never lined up. Ya pays yer money etc etc etc |

eh? You mean a bip seat unit with number board? I think its the best of both worlds! I have a single seat unit, but I managed to get hold of a bip seat unit that had been professionally painted with the white numberboards. I got the seat ad recovered to match the white & from a few feet away, you wouldnt know. Of course, I've got to get my good lady on the back now- thats another story! |
all good, but what i've done and most people cant tell its not painted is to get white gloss vinyl from a sign shop 10 quid will usualyy make three number boards, some half gold pinstripe from les smith and a credit card and some washing up liquid. It looks so much better than the ducati perfromance or casoli ones as you can go right to the edges of the screen and wrap underneath. and it is so think it looks like paint. then if you want to sell the bike, take it off. ill post a pic up here, done two bikes now and they both look as good as painting and infact the quality of the pinstripe is better than my original sps seat |
Have you ever tried that with a seat unit? I did but failed miserably. |
yeah looked mint, especially good on bipostos |
I have decided to help out those who want a cheap decent numberboard and selling a little kit on ebay. here is my pictures i mentioned. can do seats or fenders as well |

|
That looks very, very nice! How about a discount price for DSC members to buy direct rather than having to bid/buy through ebay? |
Hi that was the idea..but I didnt know whether the general opinion liked the look of them, although everyone ive made them for so far has been very happy. im even happy to fit them for those who vinyl scacres a bit, and ive got the grey/silver pin now! |
Steve..... ..... my nose cone has a top quality painted on number board. I got the bike from Bob Hills and he had it done by a contact he has on the South Coast somewhere. As he's close to you, its probably worth a call, he's unlikely to give you the name of the guy, but it might be a reasonable price? Tim |
Bexx, where abouts are you ? May like one fitted if poss ? |

number board I did my own white board with some white sticky back plastic from a sign makers, took a bit of time and a steady hand but quite easy to do. then used some gold pinstrip to edge it with. Total cost about £3.00. been on there for about 10 months now and still looks good. Rich |
