EXHAUST

Came across a pair of Ducati silencers for 851/888,but the pipe is much larger diameter than the original Y piece.Any chance of obtaining the correct size Y piece 50mm?

neil 30-Aug-2005 17:43

Looks like SP silencers........could be quite expensive to get the headers as well! You could always take them to your local metal bashers, so long as they do nice stainless ductwork they might be able to modify them.

sparkin 30-Aug-2005 19:58

You`re right they`re SP ones like I have on mine, bit like hens teeth are they(Que someone saying "I`ve got a set in the shed").

Aka Eric, bit of a nightmare finding trick bits for these old buses now, looking back god I was lucky stumberling on the bits for mine!

Try this for some trick headers

Hi Aka.eric

If you find you need to offload those SP cans after all, just let me know. If they're nice ones, I could be persuaded to take 'em off your hands!

Me too!!

sparkin 30-Aug-2005 21:08

I knew I should have broken mine instead of selling it whole.

851neil 30-Aug-2005 21:23

I could loan you some headers (SP2) for the metal basher to copy from (if that's the route you have to go down) - but you can't have em for love nor money !!!

aka.eric 30-Aug-2005 23:42

Thanks for the explanation.Sods Law I suppose, thought they would fit to system.Probably not a good idea to cut them to fit!.The standard headers are common enough arent they?.Wasnt sure what they were off, right shape for 888/851,Ducati part but a straight through silencer.I can see the difference now against the cans that came on the bike.

weeveetwin 31-Aug-2005 00:16

aka.eric

They're the cans that came with the SP4/5 bikes. Made by Termignoni, but not stamped. Here's a pic.

Hmmm , They look very like the carbon cans fitted to my bike (an 851 with an 888 motor ) will have to slip one off and measure up .

same cans as I managed to get for my 955 motored 851 !! there are some detail pics in the articles section.
no termi stamps, but they are Duc stamped & I was told they were from an SP2 not SP4/5...you learn every day...

weeveetwin 31-Aug-2005 09:10

Neil

Not sure if the cans themselves differed on the SP2, but when fitted to the bike they were less 'raked upwards' than those on later bikes, so may have been slightly different. Many SP5s were fitted with carbon cans - not sure if they left the factory that way though.

851neil 31-Aug-2005 09:20

yeah I see where your'e coming from, the 2nd set of cans I got had been carbon sleeved and appeared to be just as heavily raked as the alloy sleeved ones (with the duc stamps), but the carbon sleeves were damaged & had been replaced with stainless.
The mounting is also totally different (being much higher) and I had to have a set of special mounts knocked up to suit the pipes - there is now absolutely no way at all that a set of pillion pegs could be fitted for example.
I also had to move the rear indicators from their stock position as the pipes wouldn't fit !! I ended by moving them vertically by about 30 - 35mm as I remember.

sparkin 31-Aug-2005 10:12

The alloy subframe models have their mounting position a lot further back,if you try and mount 50mm systems on a steel subframe the SP hangers wont work. The other problem is the mounting points on the can itself are in a different position to(they`ve sort have been moved round the pipe circumference)If you have a 45mm high level system you can use those mounts, but you`ll have to mount the brackets behind the subframe as the offset is different.

Standard 45mm mounts

50mm system mounted with 45mm system hangers fitted behind

One off brackets

The exhaust didnt turn out to be a great result, but these clip ons have turned out ok.Made by Spondon, nice job I reckon.

sparkin 31-Aug-2005 23:24

They look nice, did you get those of ebay?Even tho mines going I still keep looking for bits:puzzled::(

RightSaidFred 31-Aug-2005 23:26

Graham, don't sell her. You'll be gutted for years :sniff:

sparkin 31-Aug-2005 23:32

The deal is done I`m afraid Fred(Well 99% done) and yes I will be,but the decision has been made.

aka.eric 01-Sep-2005 00:01

Yes,the clip ons came off ebay. The chap who sold them is a Ducati expert by all accounts,Roland Elworthy.Cant say the name rang any bells, but I dont know much!.

851neil 01-Sep-2005 09:45

my problem with fitting the larger pipes was the same as sparkin's - my solution (a custom hanger) however is not quite as graceful !!

851neil 01-Sep-2005 09:49

yup that's right it's a piece of ally bar - suitably bent to shape, I need to get something better sorted out.
sorry about the picture !!
the hangers that came with the pipes didn't come anywhere near the subframe due to the differences already pointed out .
btw another source for clip ons is harris - not cheap at all though...

gregmh900e 01-Sep-2005 20:08

might be able to help, as i have a spare 50mm system not fitted. let me know if you are interested. i will post photo.

I think he,s something to do with Baines racing .

gregmh900e 02-Sep-2005 16:38

For those that asked pics of 50mm, note downpipes are larger diameter strada they are not just open to 50 mm at ends.

gregmh900e 02-Sep-2005 16:40

the other pic, sorry new to all this.

RickyX 07-Sep-2005 14:36
