\'small\' number plates Does anyone know the current legal situation on having a 'small' number plate on your bike? There's a bit of a discussion going on at work, and so far I have heard everything from "....you just get a warning" all the way through to "....you can have your bike confiscated" by the police officer. Does anyone know the real story ? Thanks in advance...... |
Minimum a fine. Can get a rectification notice, not sure about points now, but you didnt get points last year |
Up here in Jock land. Fixed penalty £30 fine. Have heard the threat of taking your plate off you i believe this is only the case for repeat offenders and private plates issued by DVLA which are by all rights still property of DVLA and not the individual even though they have paid for the privilage. It may be different down south???? Regards ScottyB |
having just got a new reg and plate there's a leaflet that comes with it saying exactly as scottyb says - the reg belongs to dvla and you are merely the keeper of the vehicle using it. And they do mention confiscation if you don't toe the line or if you mis-represent the registration |
got a 30 quid fine for my one. |
My smallish plate got ignored when we all got pulled over in Thames Valley area for "safety inspection". It wasn't taking the p**s though, it was just a trimmed down plate with slightly smaller lettering. There is a standard though detailed on the DVLA website if you want to look - it specifies the border width round the outside, character size, font, and spacing, as well as "illegal" grouping of characters. Couple of mates got done for a tiny plate (fine) and loud exhausts though, because those are obviously "unsafe" to use. Interestingly though, the Aprilia Falco owner was warned that he could have got fined TWICE - one for each can! |

He was being... now what is the technical term??? Oh yes, b*llshitted!! The offence is failing to maintain the exhaust system, there is only one "system" on the bike and to issue a separate penalty for each silencer would constitute an abuse of process. |
:P £30 fine(non endorsable so who gives a feck) twice so far..As the fines go straight to the force's coffers I think the threat of confiscation is an empty one as they would be doing themselves out of the income!!!stoopid feckers..:pig::pig::pig: |

They get the cash. |
Actually Andy, it was a "special Constable" I think who was telling him, so who knows! :rolleye: |
He obviously doesn't!!! :o |
I thought revenue from Fixed penalty stuff went to the local force??? :puzzled: |
Nope. All fines and fixed penalties from a normal stop by the police go to the Treasury via the Courts. If you are issued a fixed penalty for speeding by the Camera Safety mob, if you pay the fixed penalty, they get it but if you go to Court the Treasury gets it. Some of the income from ANPR tickets, for No MOT, No Insurance & No Tax ( I think ) can be used to fund these teams. |
Cheers Rushjob, Bloody confusing this breaking the law lark:D Means i have to get a new verbal abuse line ready for next time i get pulled with a small plate. My current one of "Just stick the 30 quid in your pocket mate and save yourself the paperwork" is clearly aimed at the wrong person. |
:saint: I think the law in Scotia is different but who gives a feck zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!! |

we've been here before but why are they called special constables :puzzled: they're clearly not. bit like calling me a racer.................................. |

Well ...... when I was a kid there was a lad that we were told was "special". Perhaps they are "special" in the same way? :puzzled: |

Sadly the speed cameras appeal to the everyday road user..............ANPR fines are generally for the not insured/taxed brigade that are probably allready owing money. I think the speed penalty returns are in the 80%, anpr ticket returns are around 20% :( make out of that what you like! |
is this to small then  |

Is what too small? |
I run a 7" x 3" plate with as large as numbers as possible. Have been stopped a few times, but, always given a rectification note as it's not taking the pi55. As I understand it, if you are reported to the DVLA 3 times for messing around with the size, layout etc then the DVLA could remove the number plate and issue a Q plate .... urban mythe or truth, sure some will be along soon to tell me. Also been told that the penalties for having a small or modified plate are higher than having no plate at all ... again sure that someone will be along soon to tell me I'm talking "rubbish" |
The removal of the number only relates to a cherished mark but I do know that it only needs to be reported to them twice for them to recall the plate. Penalty in its basic form for both offences is the same, £30 fixed penalty, although if taken to court it's up to £1K |
OK,thanks for your input guys. |
