chains! out for a ride last night and what happens?? chain snapped!!:mad::mad::mad:: resulting in smashed genrator cover, spilled its gutts! dinged swingarm, chipped wheel and a nice chain imprint in the underside of the temi!! :o:o i would like to hear from anyone who has been in this situation before! the bike is 15 months old and has covered 6100 miles. Is on its original factory fitted chain & sprockets (naturally!) were do i stand with a warranty claim??:puzzled: aren't chains usually guaranteed for at least 10k? Ducati want to see the chain as they claim it is down to owner maintenance.... Any advice greatly appreciated!:sniff::sniff: [Edited on 14-9-2005 by chillo] |
no way. gutted for ya. hope you get something sorted |
I am gutted for your damage mate, but i would respectfully suggest chains can only take so much................:( |
I woud assume that witha 15 month old bike with just 6K on the clock...you have eery right to kick up a right stink. I know you ride hard and fast...but its a 'superbike' its to be expected. I would also imagine that with such a young bike, which I assume has had its servicing as required at a Ducati dealership...the chain will have been inspected/adjusted/lubed then by THEM (ie Ducati approved staff)...so for DUK to say it is due to lack of owner maintenance, thats just a push off in my eyes. I think you have every right to have it all sorted by Ducati. Problem is that they expect the Joe public to just turn over and not pursue the claim...It really gets my goat when large companies do that:mad: I know for sure that if I ever found myself in a similar situation, I would not hesitate to chase them down with all kinds of action. Rant over:o |
Got some nice photos of you on the back wheel at Cadwell if that helps! |

That I`ll help with the warranty claim! |
No chance of warranty unless you can prove a manufacturing defect or that it was not joined correctly. Chains can be subject to all sorts of punishment, wheelies, stretched and loaded from landing jumps, incorrectly cleaned using wrong lube or solvents which damage them etc etc. waranty doesnt specifically list chains but does state items subject to wear are excluded so that would mean a chain isnt covered. |
I don't think you have a chance in hell of getting your dealer to accept responsibility:mad: Sorry mate. Chains need constant attention; oil, tensioning etc. The dealer will only claim you either haven't oiled it enough or you tightend it too much. Ultimately, it's a riders responsibility to check his chain. I feel for you though:flame: |

oh dear oh dear oh dear ...... |
Shouldn't imagine there should be any major user intervention in respect of chain maintenance other than check and lube. Check your user manual that came with the bike - it tells you to only let the dealer adjust your chain, so if it was done at service it was maintained according to manufacturer requirement? |

Liked the pic's of the lakes trip. It must have been some day with all those Duc's. Again, it's worth moving back to Blighty just to meet up with you all. :( Was going to ask how you got them presented like that on your website but then I saw the Apple logo, say no more. In my next life I'm coming back with an Apple:smug: |
If i was looking to make a warranty claim, id delete this thread. They do read this u know............. |

I'll bet theres a line in there saying check it more regualrly than every 6000 miles and if it needs adjusting take it back to the dealer. The manual has diagrams to show you how to measure chain slack but does not explain how to adjust it..... Any chain would need adjusting in 6000 miles so it'll be an easy check by DUK to see that it wasn't done by a dealer if not no warranty :( |

yes bike has been ridden hard but only what its designed to do! it is a 'superbike' after all! Bike has been main dealer serviced from new (1st and 1st annual) and had its first annual service around June (Less than 1k miles ago). Chain has been oiled regularly with scott oil, never let it dry. Has not had to be adjusted for several months. Chain has not failed on softlink, the link it failed has a clean break in the middle of the link! [Edited on 14-9-2005 by chillo] |
So it didn't fail on a jointed part, the metal dog-bone shape snapped??? You must have a case then as poor maintenance won't affect that part unless it rusted through???? |

Intended use is always a difficult one, I'm currently re wording our warranty booklet for mountain bikes and its difficult to clearly state what is considered normal use and what isn't, you can't cover every eventuality. Typically you'll find that any modifications to your bike will invalidate the warranty as well so any increases in power output etc could be considered to have impacted on the chain. If the link broke in middle it doesn't mean its a manufacturing fault, the link could have been stretched by the increase in chain tension after landing a jump or from hard acceleration on a track neither of which might be considered normal. Its a very grey area but maybe DUK will be willing to help if they are reading...... |
did you sign your warranty booklet when you bought your bike? if so you agreed to the conditions and in my booklet final drive is excluded from warranty:o |
What a bummer mate :o All i can say is good luck with the claim. |
You sure have had some bad luck with this bike chillo. My sympathies. Hope it's sorted soon. Looking on the bright side, it could have snapped at the beginning of the summer! |
i had the same problem last year on the 999s i had 13000km and a 03 model - took out the engine case and the swingarm and it was fixed under garantee .... |
I am still awaiting result of my claim with EK mine had done about 2500 miles in 6 months and the soft link failed. Feel for you mate I know the feeling I was gutted. Age |
it all depends how far the dealer will stick his neck out for you.... my bike was nearly only ridden on the track and it was still covered under garantee, its only out of cover if you ride in licenced eventīs ....and that is from my dealers mouth.... |

Still dont think its covered whatever its been used for as its classed as a consumable part? have a look in the front of the warranty book it lists all these items as exempt |
my chain snapped through the link pin not the side plate funny thing was that my dealer wasnt too happy at first and then his hire bike threw a chain and his damage was worse than mine  its a known problem , and they will change and repair it its up to your dealer to fight your corner after all |
consumerable part still has an expected 'life' span, push them hard, the onus of proof is on the manufacturer/dealer not you. May be worth a solicitor as the likely cost of damage sounds like Ģ000's...:( |
WOW!!! :( Sorry to hear that. Hope you can sort it out, good luck. |
