Just thought I would do the compulsory first post to say hello as im new to the boards :)

I have a 99 748BP which im going to take my direct access test on, people think im stupid but It was either that or get a CB600 or something :barfy: and then have to sell it again plus there would not be the insentive to pass :smug:

That's what I like to see - someone doing the test on something just a bit different to all the Courier bikes you see - well done Stu !

Hope it goes well - I'm very new to the board as well, but I've found everyone very welcoming and full of useful advice.

Thanks for that. I just couldn’t justify spending around a grand on something I just did not want. Have ridden mates bikes gsxr's etc but had always wanted a ducati, so I got one :)

Just spent tonight taking the Carbon Termagoni's (sp?) off and putting the road legal one's on, trying my hardest not to wind an examiner up too much, don’t want to appear "Yeah im taking my bike on a sports bike, as im brilliant" as much as possible.

I put a vented clutch cover on it so it be a bit better for manoeuvres, apparently they aren’t good for it? But the noise it makes is unbelievable, cant decide to keep it on or not.

Hi, welcome. You'll get used to the clutch noise ... "they all do that, sir! ". It's "character". :)

Steering lock is not brilliant, that is what people usually refer to. If you have to do "the cones" you might struggle a bit.

I second HW's comments about steering lock! They have the knack of taking "keen" looking bikers on roads with Camber that looks like its been applied with a knife and fork and with the road width of a knats knackers!

Have to agree with the rest with regards to steering, it's not as bad as the 851, but hey, DUC's are designed to be ridden on their sides, fast, very fast:devil:

Not sure if you have to play around with the mapping if you are replacing Termi's with the road legals:puzzled: Check on the Tech. section

Heh thanks for the support. I can do the U turns on it, only thing im worried about is the emergency stop, get a bit excited and grab the front brake and :(

nope EMPI is a VW thing..... Had 4 beetle and a split screen camper before selling it to buy a bike and a cheep runabout (golf diesel van)!

Good luck with your test,dont think I'd like to try a U-turn on a 748 while being observed and judged about it,just be confident and I'm sure you'll manage.
You might find getting insurance for your first bike harder than the test though.

..Just start with a great burn out, do a wheelie in 2nd gear at 50 mph and finish the exam with a great stoppie....
If you survive you are going to get the licence...NOT :lol::lol:

I am not au fait with the whole direct access this having done the old 2 part test with the examiner on foot.

Does your 748 have to be restricted? What are the rules for a new starter these days?

welcome - good luck, I feel jealous as I had to ride a odd collection of junk till I eventually got a Ducati ! I cant help but feel that the KH125 I took my test on may have been easier to handle, what is the minimum sized bike you can do the direct access on ?

Welcome to the club. A good choice of bike too, although I'll reserve my judgement that you're doing your test on it. The way to do a u-turn is with your knee down! Good luck anyway...

Ah to get the bikes you want, goto uni, they give you the money to buy a new bike (*new to you) 3 times a year:smug:

It may not be the best choice in bikes for a test, but my idea is if i can use it and get used to it before i do my test (not on the roads) Then the money I saved on lessons will pay for my insurance. It works out at £132 a month on a pay monthly policy, but then after christmas ill have 1 year NCB from my trusty wee CB100N (ok so i didnt really start out on a duke) and then the insurance isnt actually that bad only a few hundred more than a GSXr600 or something!

If it will work, i dont know, there doesnt seem to be that many people that have done the same thing.:puzzled: But if I have to wait till i can afford lessons properly then it wont be the end of the world.

Unless there are any nice ducati riding qualified instructers out there that want me to follow them round for a few days as they would like the trainee bike to be a ducati too :P
