maintenance cost 749s vs 999

just went down to the ducati dealer and the service staff told me the cost for servicing the 749s is abt twice that of 999 or any ducati bike. he said the 749s, and the R bikes are of race specs and asked me to consider carefully first.

any advice here ?

The 'R' models are expensive to service, but the 749S should be the same as any other 749/999.
I would double check with another dealer,if I were you.

chris999 18-Sep-2005 09:14

thats b*****S should be the same'ish

pedro 18-Sep-2005 09:41

dont get it my-self? the engines are the same lay out? some bike have titanium parts, but a valve clearance check is the same job ? whats the difference ?. oil change is same? air filters?. cam belts same lay out?

dannytan1 18-Sep-2005 10:04

sad as there is only 1 dealer here in spore

Carbon749 18-Sep-2005 15:10

Only difference that I know of is that R spec bike have a belt change every year were S and standard bikes are every 2 years.

pedro 18-Sep-2005 17:04

2 years for belts

chris.p 18-Sep-2005 19:21

I belive the S has the same heads as the R, so need removing to adjust the shims etc:o

Chris.:burn:

Twinfan 18-Sep-2005 23:44

You sure about that???

Carbon749 19-Sep-2005 00:00

I was told by the guys at Moto Rapido that "R" need belts every year.

I know my "S" only needs belts every 2 years.

bolds 19-Sep-2005 00:23

749s from 2004 does have the tapered valve collets like 749r that require the head to be removed if closing shims need changing-but Ducati are expecting double the intervals for any adjustments so the dealer is quoting a worst case scenario and its most unlikely that it would be the full amount quoted

galaxy 19-Sep-2005 01:09

Do what I do and it can save you a few bucks here and there. On my 749s, I take it to the dealer and request valves and belts only...not a 6,000 mile or 12,000 mile service. Everything else is straight foward oil change and visual checks. Give or take a loose nut or chain adjustment here and there. If the fuel system needs servicing (TPS reset, balance T/B's, idle mixture, etc...) request that separately as well. A fuel system service at my shop is like an hours labour and that's it. I forgot the actual quote but valves & belts only on my bike was a couple hundred dollars (US) cheaper than a standard , full 6,000 mile service. Just an idea.

dannytan1 19-Sep-2005 01:38

thx for all the advice,
but really puts me off buying the bike after i learn off the maintenance cost.

Twinfan 19-Sep-2005 10:18

That's Ducatis for ya!

chillo 19-Sep-2005 11:57

r models get belt change after 2 years or 12k
mine didn't have its changed at first year service back in June! phew!
:D

servicing costs aren't that much higher when you take into account that most inline jap bikes need servicing more often i.e. 4 or 4.5k:eureka:

iang 19-Sep-2005 12:09

Chillo,

How much did you get stung for your 1 year service, mine is going in today for its 1 year check up.

If they do not change the belts how the hell do they justify the prices for an 'oil change' and check over ?

chillo 19-Sep-2005 13:08

got stung £559! but that did include £120 for new front brake pads:barfy::sniff:

iang 19-Sep-2005 13:15

£120 for brake pads !!!!!

My slipper clutch and engine braking is going to be used more severely if that is the price of pads. ( Or remove the front brake lever )

So about £440 for the service, I still cannot see how they justify the prices though, did the bike 'feel' any different when you got it back ?

itexuk 19-Sep-2005 13:16

749S

Had my first service at 600 miles and was charged £244, bloody expensive for an oil change + filter and a few other minor bits.

iang 19-Sep-2005 13:24

Yeh itexuk and that was your 'free' service the one that is meant to be cheap, although it was from my dealer they only charge for parts ( £43)

My 749s has now had the small service and the belt service.

£210 for the small service and £330 for the belt, coolant and brake fluid service. Both done at Itallia in Lincoln and very happy with their service.

Being honest mates with Jap bikes pay similar so I'm happy with the prices charged.

Tabby999r 20-Sep-2005 00:35

Its only the 948R that needs a belt change every year? All the 999/S,R etc every 2 years.:D

doctorwu 20-Sep-2005 00:53

Why pay for an oil & filter job or even for changing brake pads...Most bike owners should be able to do these. I do though take the bike in for the major services.
