996R or 998S ? Help required

Hi all.

I have bought a cat 3 damaged 998 with all paperwork from a dealer with a VNC check. The engine does not have a number on the side.
The frame is a 998 with the correct numbers on the headstock.
My problem is when I went to change the oil I found out it has a deep sump engine. That must mean that it has a 996R or 998S engine in it.

How do I identify if it has a 996R or 998S engine in it ?

The CPU says 996R on it but I do not know how to identify if it is a proper R engine.

Any help please

Not conclusive, but try Ducati UK with the frame number and they should tell you what it "should be".
The 996R ECU was fitted to a few 998's when they got Termi cans fitted.
Only real way to be sure would be to pull it apart and see what's inside, cam spec's, Ti rods etc.

Henners 27-Sep-2005 00:11

I guess there's no plate on the headstock so that would tend to indicate it's not a 996R although there are some without. The simple answer is to email the engine, frame and registration numbers to: info@ducatiuk.com and they will give you the bike's history.

glj100 27-Sep-2005 00:19

The headstock is adjustable and does fit the correct 998 codes, so it is deff a 998.

There are standard cans on the bike at the moment and it runs very sweet.

Hope the info is more help

Oh thank god! I thought this was going to be another one of those sanctamonious 996r threads!:lol:

Henners 27-Sep-2005 00:22

They're both 998cc engines - email DUK and you'll know for sure.

glj100 27-Sep-2005 00:27

I had the bike services at Gtech (Recommended) who contacted Ducati but we are still waiting for info. He gave them the cam numbers for a trace.

Strange one to sort out.

andyb 27-Sep-2005 00:32

Do you have a carbon air box? Do you have ohlins front? is it a bp or mono? The cam numbers will tell you as they make quite a difference on the power output 998 or a 998S!

andyb 27-Sep-2005 00:32

Is gtech, geoff who was at jhp?

glj100 27-Sep-2005 00:39

No carbon air box, no Ohlins front Showa , Ohlins on the rear and for the damper.

Yes, Geoff was at JHP.

Good man. Recommend him.

glj100 27-Sep-2005 00:40

also 4 pad brake calipers!

KeefyB 27-Sep-2005 07:17

Sounds like a 998S!

Twinfan 27-Sep-2005 12:27

Yep, certainly sounds like a 998S to me...

Sorry Andy but the 996R has a plaque on the top yoke and the 998S doesn't, i know its extra weight but i still can't agree with your statement, very blinkered and narrow minded.;)

I heard that it helps with turn-in...just that little bit of extra weight above the centre of mass works wonders!

Think you'll find the Bostrom/Bayliss 998S models have a plaque on the top yoke.... and didn't some of the 996R's come without the plaque? :P

Really?

I'd be interested in that - my 998R doesn't have the plaque on it anymore. I've got the rest of the bits and pieces so I know what number it was but not having the plaque on the yoke gives me the irrits!

Clues?

JPM 28-Sep-2005 16:30

Tony, its whats commonly known as a joke, henners was taking the rip about ebay.

I do know a good carpenter who could make you a nice pine plaque:lol:

In actual fact the first owner of my bike said it came without a plaque, he wrote to the factory and they supplied it. I still have the letter from the factory along with all the original paperwork.

TP 28-Sep-2005 16:37

Ahh .. I'll write a letter then.

Gotta have the plaque really!
