Ye Olde 600SS - refurbishment

I have an old 600SS built in the Cagiva days. I want to keep it for old times sake and I'm thinking of taking it to bits this coming winter to have the paintwork sorted out (usual scratches and flakes as well as damage to the front wheel due to fluid leaking).

My question is: Do I keep it 100% original (just re-paint and re-plate) or do I change the colours?

It currently has the gold/bronze frame, slightly darker gold/bronze wheels, gold+silver forks and silver swingarm. Everything else is standard red.

I like the idea of red frame, gloss black wheels.

Ideas? Comments?

I'd definitely suggest having some fun with the colours. Red frames look great, as do white frames/wheels (like the '92 900). Matt black wheels also look spot on but can be a bugger to keep clean.

Either way it'll only ever be worth £14-1500 regardless of the colour, so have fun and build a bike you love. Besides, you could slot a 900 motor in there......:ninja:

Cheers,

Ali

Let me know if you need a good painter I have an excellent one.

Also make sure that you can get all the transfers that you need for the fairing, before you sand it back. There is a man who can make new for you, but the needs the old ones as patterns before he can make them.

Ya know, it never crossed my mind! But really, unless you're doing DD why deprive the chassis of the engine it rightly deserves. Besides 600 engines aren't exactly rare (unlike bloody 620s)!!

Cheers,

Ali

If the bike is in mint condition except the paint job, I'd rather go for a standard paint job. In a few years your bike will be a collection model...

'91 my friend :D
The '92 is white frame and black wheels I think...

Hmm... not mint but very good. Usual scratches and scrapes. I'm in Essex (Chelmsford) - know any good local paint shops?

Good point about the decals/stickers. Where are they available from?

I go to the Battlesbridge classic bike show and I'm always stunned by the fantastic condition of the bikes there. Also, bikes that are now considerd "classic " that I once thrashed and dumped (Honda 750SS, Yamaha RD200, Suzuki AP50!!!)

I figure in 10 years time I want people gawping at my "mint" 600SS:bouncy:

Hi there!

If you need a hand, I know the 600SS pretty much inside out as I rebuilt my own for the DD races this year - have a look at my blog here: http://www.horrible.demon.co.uk/bikes/racing2005.htm

I'm in Chelmsford too, along with quite a few others on here, so if you ever need someone to come and kick your tyres and drink your beer, just give me a call :D

antonye 28-Sep-2005 17:14

PS. I'm stripping mine down to the frame at the end of the season and sending it away to be coated. My friend Mark had his 900ss frame done for under £100 and it looks better than new.

We might even be able to negotiate a discount if we get them done together?

Tonio600 28-Sep-2005 19:11

Hi Antonye,

You'll have mine. Let me know a few weeks in advance when you plan to do that. And maybe my 2 sets of wheels, but I'm not sure, I must decide the frame colour first :D

I think Rattler wanted his to be coated as well, when it's time you should make a call in the DD forum because of the loads of crashes we had...

Ok, not a problem. It's a company in Maldon, just up the road from me and his work looks top notch. I'll post something when we're ready to get ours done.

FiscusFish 29-Sep-2005 09:16

Got the name or number of that company Anthony? Once I get my new frame from Ducati (fingers crossed...) I fancy getting it's colour changed whilst it's all stripped down.

Mark is coming over tonight so I will ask him then, unless he's going to register and post himself ... the lurker is around here somewhere...
