Exhaust Wrap

Do any of you guys use some of the exhaust wrap like Thermo Tech or some of the other name brands on your pipes?? Thermo Tech has an all black wrap that would look pretty good, IMO.

khu996 03-Oct-2005 14:46

Seems like its very popular in the States for some reason, but folk round 'ere don't go for it that much...wonder why?

I think there is some argument as to how effective it really is? If you do fit it, come pics would be nice! :D

I'd be interested in how you get on / or any examples: I've played with the idea of a good looking exhaust wrap for the 748 to reduce heat build up in the faired areas, and around the legs/seat (it gets pretty hot when riding in 36ºC temps in leathers) - but do not want to compromise the beauty of my little baby...

Sorry guys. I was looking for some photo's of a 998 a guy on speedzilla had done and it looked great. I have decided I'm gonna do mine in the black but headed out of town on business for a few weeks. I will definately get some photos up when I'm done.

khu996 07-Oct-2005 00:36

Did you find the photos of the 998? If so, can you post a link?

galaxy 07-Oct-2005 17:49

Yes, I will continue to search. Problem is, speedzilla changed there forum to a new design and when they did, it seems like it's impossible to go back and find something from the "old" forum. Even when you do a search for something you know is there, it doesn't show up. That 998 looked sweet though and made me want to do it. Guy took his time and did a very nice job. I'll keep searching cause I want to see it again also.

galaxy 07-Oct-2005 17:59

Found it...here's a photo of the bike and a link to the thread about the discussion. He didn't use the black in this photo, but I think I'm still going to go with the black.

:saint: ,WHY O WHY,oh my god,if Nora Batty was a bike

PB 07-Oct-2005 23:27

Much as I'd love to resolve the heat issue - that photo of the 998 doesn't inspire me: Looks rather ugly compared to the naked pipes....

PB 07-Oct-2005 23:32

Aah, just looked at the Jet Hot 'polished finish' ceramic coating - now that does look interesting!

Any one at DSC have any experience of this? And, is the higher exhaust gas temp through the end mufflers an issue?

Many thanks

PB 07-Oct-2005 23:54

If its any help....

Only complaint is when fresh out of the package, it was darker black than it is now. Wetting it and then cranking the bike to dry it out made it fade slightly but no big deal.

khu996 23-Oct-2005 05:32

At last! I was waiting for you to get back with pics!

Some might not like it, but I don't think its too bad at all. I've already bought the wrap, will be doing it to mine soon. Have you got any tips or pointers? Did you take the pipes off, or do them in situ? Did you soak the wrap in water? What did you use to tie the ends?

Take some more pics further away from the bike, perhaps we can get a better idea of what it looks like. You're right about it fading a little, looks a lot darker when its rolled up in the packet!

Can you feel any reduction in heat?

Looks 'orrible!:barfy:

swannymere 23-Oct-2005 10:34

:o Oh my god Galaxy, what have you done:barfy:I'd rather paint mine yellow than put that crap on it.:saint:

Chaz 23-Oct-2005 11:23

Looks like the insulation on my old boiler.

galaxy 26-Oct-2005 06:24

It's funny the differences between our sides. You guys unanimouly dislike the wrap and it's the exact opposite over here. No worries though, I appreciate the inputs. I think my big thing was distracting from the oval pipe with the big weld seams on it. Wasn't a fan of that.

scully 26-Oct-2005 11:50

Yikes! Nope certianly not my cup of tea either... Sorry!

rcgbob44 06-Nov-2005 10:00

Yup, thats one ugly bike!

Simon Reed 06-Nov-2005 10:38

Galaxy

i've used it on front pipes before,to stop burning the lowers, but looking at the way you've wrapped it,i think,it will come off,as your overlaps need to be tighter !,and you'll get it to hold better,if you use lock wire,as opposed to those jubilee clips, near the heads !,it does work tho, reducing the heat, but from a looks point of view,i'm on the fence,as it serves a purpose, rather than trying to creat a fashion statement !
